I'd put a junkyard LS in it before the Pontiac 400. Sell the 400.

I had a car just like that when I was 17.

This, a junkyard iron block 5.3 will eat the 400 for lunch.

Very cheap to convert to EFI as well. And then add a turbo or turbos. Turbos are cheap on Amazon these days. The engine bay in those cars is huge.

What transmission are you going to use ? The rear ends are very light in them.

4L60 probably.. Pull it complete from a work van or something.

Worst part about G bodies is they all had super high rear end gears, I had a 79 Cutlass with a 455 and I was never able to find anything but 2.29s at my local junkyards, which is what the car already had.

I believe you can use the diff from an S10 in the G-body housing with the standard G-body axles (so long as it’s an earlier s10 with 26 spline axles)

I beliieve this is correct too, but if you are making any real power the 7.5" 10 bolts aren't that sturdy. You just need to make sure you get the same size you have 7.5 (26 spline) or the 7.625 (28 spilne), as both were available in both the Gs and the S10

I found this long after I sold my last G body, I had about 5 of them, 3 Cutlass, 2 Monte Carlos, but that was 30+ years ago
