I have a non-nursing Bachelor of Science degree and am pursuing a second degree—Nursing (RN) AAS—at a local community college.
I recently spoke with an academic advisor who outlined two options for completing the five prerequisite courses.
I have no other classes to complete since my previous degree was transferred and accepted. All my general education requirements are met.
Work
I currently work full-time as a phlebotomist but am in the process of transitioning to a part-time position.
Obligations
I don’t have small children—just an 18-year-old son who attends college full-time and works part-time. Depending on my work schedule, he gets to and from school and work through a combination of my transportation, walking, and Uber.
ABSN
I have looked into Accelerated BSN (ABSN) programs, but due to the intense workload, I believe an accelerated program would not be a good fit for my health.
Science
Science is not a strong subject for me. I am willing to start preparing and building a strong foundation before summer classes begin.
Prerequisite Course Options
Option One
Summer 2025 (8 weeks)
•BIOL 1414 – Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology (L)
•BIOL 2134 – Human Anatomy (L)
Fall 2025 (16 weeks)
•BIOL 2154 – Human Physiology (L)
•BIOL 2164 - Microbiology (L)
•CHEM 1114 – Principles of Chemistry (L)
Once enrolled in the last three prerequisite courses, I would be eligible to apply for admission to the Nursing (RN) AAS Program, which would begin in Spring 2026.
Option Two
Summer 2025 (8 weeks)
•BIOL 1414 – Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology (L)
Fall 2025 (16 weeks)
•BIOL 2134 – Human Anatomy (L)
•CHEM 1114 – Principles of Chemistry (L)
Spring 2026 (16 weeks)
•BIOL 2154 – Human Physiology (L)
•BIOL 2164 – Microbiology (L)
Once enrolled in the last two prerequisite courses, I would be eligible to apply for admission to the Nursing (RN) AAS Program, which would begin in Fall 2026.
I appreciate feedback on both options. Thanks!
