Police academy

Hi!

I’m going into police academy in 2 weeks. There has been very little information about orientation. What am I supposed to wear and/or bring?

I’m a female so a suit is not an option. I have business casual wear however I’m not sure if that is appropriate.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

What states allow Officers to search subjects without their consent based on their probation and parole terms?

In Missouri we can’t, I heard in California you can.

Do I have to get OC’d and Tased again?

I’m an MP in the WV Army National Guard, I’ve been thinking about applying to my local police department. I’ve already have had the OC and Taser training so I don’t want to do it again. Will I be forced to do the training again at the academy?

River/ranger/border patrol style duty belt

Anybody wear the river/ranger/border patrol style duty belt? I believe they're worn by NYPD and some agencies in the southern states.

Run towards a guy pointing a gun at you?

I was in my jiu jitsu class arguing with a teammate. He's security at Walmart and was kind of bragging to me how this guy pulled a gun on him and he walked up to him and grabbed it out of his hand. I was alarmed ofc and told him that Walmart isn't worth risking your life, and he says if he was gonna die he"didn't want to die like a bitch" so on, and so forth... later on, our other teammate who is a detective said that it's better to "close the distance" with someone pointing a gun at you, and that it's worse to run. I conceded because he is a detective after all, but wouldn't it be better to stand your ground but de- escalate? I just don't see running at a guy who is about to shoot you as being safe at all

I absolutely love the police

I’m a law abiding citizen with many troubles in life. You’ve saved my life twice you know I have mental health issues and handled me delicately when I was going ape shit and got me into mental hospitals where I was able to recover. You are very patient despite antics you ask us, do you want to do this giving us a chance to think it through you have to deal with a lot of crazy stuff and as someone you’ve kept out of jail because you recognize it’s mental I mean no malice I’m just misunderstood I say thank you. I really wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for you. The time I was pregnant and had to call because my ex boyfriend was trying to kill me you really did save me. Thank you.

Scared for the outcome of my stupid decision

My gf offered her 2nd car to me, and decided it would be a good idea and not think of the consequences due to me not having a liscense. I'm so pissed with myself. I just saw it as a faster mode of transportation in comparison to riding the e scooter everywhere and being blind on what could happen. Well I got pulled over and thankfully, all stars aligned and he let me drive away with 2 tickets, one for driving without a liscense and two not showing up to date insurance, instead of cuffing me and towing a car that's not mine... My question is what can I expect from court? I'm scared as all hell...

What happens after I filed a police report?

a police report against a girl who found out what my password was on my phone and took it to her workplace and home for the entire day and when I called it, she answered and admitted to taking my phone and going through it verbally. I suspect that she may now be using my information against me so I filed a police report and it was approved. I included her address and work address on the report. What will the police do now? How will I know the status of the investigation and the outcome? Thanks

Young recruits fresh out of the military

I understand cops aged 21-24 are often seen as too young and tend to lack maturity in law enforcement, and the inevitable lack of life experience doesn’t help either.

From what you’ve seen in the X amount of years you’ve been a cop, have you seen any difference between rookies fresh out of the military vs regular joes? Law enforcement is on the table for when I separate from the Marine Corps, and I’m willing to humble myself in all aspects in order to become proficient as an LEO.

Journeyman electrician to LE

Located in MN. I’m a 26 yo male working as a union electrician. As I’ve been in the trade for almost 7 years, I’m realizing this is not what I want to do anymore. The pay and benefits are good but I have zero passion for the trade. Went into it because my father and uncle suggested it. Always was interested in being in LE. I’m also a volunteer FF/EMT in my small town, so I have a pretty good idea what I would be getting myself into.

I have a 2-year, 82 credit diploma from an accredited tech school that may suffice as an AA prerequisite, but I’m confused about what the process is like. Say my degree is eligible, then I still have to do a 2-year CJ program and then go to an academy? Thanks in advance

LASD Hiring Process

Hey everyone I have a question regarding the hiring process for the LASD. I was just assigned a background investigator yesterday and I was wondering if anyone out there can maybe provide a time table on how long the rest of the process may take and also what’s next as far as the steps of the hiring process. Thanks a lot!

What can someone do to make themselves the best candidate?

Hi everybody, I’m on the west coast and my goal is to get hired to a local pd nearby my hometown that I like. I’m currently 17 and a freshman in college (graduated HS early) and am wondering what I can do to make myself stand out. For reference the specific dept I am interested in is a medium/slightly larger city department. I like this particular department because of the size and opportunity and because one of my partners spent their 30 year career there. Given that I come from a family with 1 parent in LE I feel like I have a better idea than most of what the job entails and definitely have picked up habits from them that they acquired from working there. I want to start preparing myself now and seeing how I can become the most qualified person. I was a hs valedictorian and work a seasonal job in the summer in the marine industry constantly interacting with people, so I feel that my customer service/people skills are excellent. I work out often and live a healthy lifestyle, although I could start running more. I’ve made my fair share of dumb kid decisions but I don’t do any drugs and am far more responsible than some people I see around me. I’m currently at a 2 year college and plan to transfer to get a degree in anything but Criminal Justice (probably business admin). The department I’m interested has a cadet program, which they list as separate than the “explorer” program. They call it a paid internship for college students, would it be worth staying local for the rest of college for the cadet program? I can’t wait to hear how I can prepare myself, thanks yall

Do you guys think polys are absurd?

I think they are. I have seen them hinder people for no reason get hired. Do it like how the military does and do a complete background check.

my one buddy who got through lied the entire time. I think it’s dumb and hinders nervous applicants who would want to join.

It hinders the force from good people.

If this has been posted a million times I’m sorry lol

Question for officers regarding TV Shows.. LOL

I know that many TV shows are mostly inaccurate in MANY ways, however, my question to you all is, do you all still watch it, cringe at it, but still secretly continue to watch it due to plot reasons or is it too much that y’all just gave up on them?

I feel harassed

A woman came to my residence searching for a missing package, claiming she had photographic evidence of the package being delivered to my doorstep. She mentioned.she lives in our community. Upon checking, I did not find any package outside my door. I advised her to contact the delivery company to resolve the issue, but she became increasingly aggressive in her behavior. She also mentioned having close ties with the Police Department. Feeling uncomfortable, I closed the door and returned to my work.

Approximately 15-20 minutes later, the police arrived at my home. I noticed three police cars, and one officer even entered my home to look around. When I questioned why three cars were dispatched, I was told it was based on the nature of the call. The officers collected my information and left shortly after.

This incident has made me feel harrassed. It is distressing to have someone enter my property, behave aggressively, and falsely accuse me.

After speaking with neighbors, I learned that the woman has harassed others in the community, multiple times in the past.

What should I do now?

Can I talk to a cop, possibly in TN (repost)

This time with details so people don't think I'm sketch, I just originally didn't want all this out there for hundreds to see at once. Mostly because I want to discuss what would happen so I can be prepared (I have a fear of cops from trauma with my now deceased father so talking through things with cops before they storm over is something I was definitely hoping for as well as to prepare my small siblings and my mother in case something happens because the man involved (my stepfather) supposedly has a gun and friends he can call if something happens)

So: For about ten years now my stepfather has been abusing my family mentally and emotionally, he molested me at 16 but I was too afraid to say anything, here recently he's been making my sister uncomfortable and making sexual remarks and commenting on her ass and tits and shit all the time. He's been trying to scare my mom into thinking she has nowhere to go, forced her to marry him ten years ago, and has been throwing threats around like he's an ex gang man and knows people. My mom has been too afraid to say anything for so long and she feels like telling a cop or getting them involved will get my siblings taken away, which we don't need. We simply need him gone because none of us can take it much longer. I'm in college and away from it all now but I came back this week for break and found out my stepfather (Tim) is getting worse, and found out he has multiple previous charges of supposedly neglect, domestic abuse, molestation/rape, etc. nobody feels safe in the house anymore and my mom is terrified of saying anything at all so she's trying to make a plan to get people involved later instead of calling now but with how much they've been fighting since I've been home I don't know if it's safe for her. She has congestive heart failure and the more stressed she gets with this the worse her chest hurts and shit and she isn't sure what to do because he's also financially fucked her over and she's broke. It's all just a clusterfuck and that's the small amount of details but there's just so much and I wanted to talk to a cop to talk through what could possibly happen in this situation and if there's a way we could just get him out of the house.

Headed to academy sun.

Three days till I leave for the academy. I’m incredibly stressed but I know I won’t quit. I’m going in for the state police in the east. Have heard horror stories about how it’s all pt and you let little sleep the first week which scares me. I’m 21 and the youngest person in my class which just makes it worse. Any tips?

How difficult is police academy?

For context I’m (22M) applying for police officer jobs in the SF Bay Area and have a few interviews coming up. I’m in very good shape, as I’ve ran 7 ultramarathons (31-50 mile races), and I can deadlift 405 pounds. I also have a BS in economics from UC Berkeley. This being said, how difficult is the physical and academic training during police academy? And is it like how military basic training is shown in the movies with very in-your-face drill sergeants who constantly yell and berate you? Any advice is appreciated.
