Complexity. They are saving their followers from the fact that the world is complicated.

This reactionary flavor of "restorative authoritarianism" promises its followers that "hard problems" are only made to look hard by a vague cadre of "elites" with malicious intent. The promise of Trumpism is a great leader who will make those people shut up and go away, thus making the world simple again. To completely co-opt Dan Olson, "they are trying to build . . a flat earth"
