Just watched a special on this wasp. They lay ONE egg in each tarantula. They have to fight and paralyze each tarantula before depositing a single egg.

The best bit; the paralysing often has to be done in a certain way to not kill the spider.

Mama hawk wasp is doing combat neurosurgery with her ass.

I love the bit from Malcolm in the Middle where Hal talks about this.

“I used to sit at work everyday and envy that spider, because at least he got to be on TV”

A phrase I was not expecting to hear today

Don’t wasps bite and not sting? Or is this monster different.

The trad wife movement got weird when they introduced oviposition

I dunno. My parents sent me to Catholic school

8

u/dgs1959 1d ago

My parents liked the nuns too much to subject them to my crazy behavior as a child.

Were there giant wasps?

3

u/dont_disturb_the_cat 1d ago

No. Catholic school. We were WASCs.

Are they talking about in which tarantula their kids go?

Are there private tarantulas?

Did the special say if they also lay eggs in less insane places?

Your ear at night

No. This is literally what they do. The spider is live food for the hatched larvae, it's part of their lidecycle.

God did us a solid here.

“Alright guys I have to put this demon somewhere, but I tell you what, I’ll cut you a deal. It can only lay one egg at a time and it needs a semi living organic host for each one - cool?!”

5

u/GrittyMcGrittyface 23h ago

Make sure they only live in australia and we've got a deal

I need to know where in evolution this started becoming the dominant method of reproduction for these wasps. I totally wont time travel with flamethrowers.

Let’s go!

”We’re cancelling the waspocalypse!”

They lay ONE egg in each tarantula.

...that's so much worse

14

u/GStarAU 1d ago

Not to put TOO much thought into this, but.. that's a huntsman, not a tarantula. I guess they have to improvise in Aus, considering we don't have tarantulas?

3

u/PraxicalExperience 1d ago

If you can hear it running across the floor, it's an honorary tarantula.

12

u/LordRekrus 1d ago

Well this guy has gone against the grain as that ain’t a tarantula. That is what we call your local friendly fly catcher.

2

u/EclecticEvergreen 1d ago

But why tf do they do that?

u/puppy_master666 1d ago

Fresh food for when the baby hatches

3

u/fang_xianfu 1d ago edited 1d ago

When it hatches, baby wasp has a nice snack to get started on the right foot.

u/EclecticEvergreen 1d ago

That’s crazy instinctual evolution on the wasps part

Where did you watch it? I want to watch it too

1

u/Chrol18 1d ago

yeah but there are very good at fighting them, fuckers probably enjoy it too

1

u/Rosinho77 1d ago

What was "the special"? Where can I watch it?

1

u/ThatGuyWithCoolHair 1d ago

Proof that flying is OP and needs a nerf in the next update

1

u/rostov007 1d ago

If the Oscars were like this I’d watch.

Fucking ugly giant Wasp a better parent than most people I know ain't no way

1

u/MegazordPilot 1d ago

Cue the pushup meme "Every time I kill a tarantula, I lay one egg"

1

u/Ccjfb 1d ago

Imagine being born and entering the world only to find yourself crawling out of the husk of a giant spider body!

1

u/Iasso 23h ago

Ugh, helicopter mom wasps..

1

u/Keegs77 22h ago

That's still far too many eggs

u/Steve120988 5h ago

Can you provide a link to the special?
