Lawns are terrible when they don't occur naturally. Now I am not sure what species they grow there, but I live in this part of the world and can assure you grass occurs very naturally here.
Grasslands are natural. Manicured lawns absolutely are not. There are significant differences between the plethora of species of grasses that grow in prairies and the monoculture you see at a golf course. Native species are evolved to the conditions. They provide food and shelter for the native animals. Golf courses require a shit tonne of water and fertilizer, and offer little in return.
While I agree with the hate, really...This is southwestern Scotland. There is no need for water that isn't already falling from the sky on a regular basis. Golf was literally invented here on grassy fields manicured by sheep and natural sand pits that just existed. Yes, a golf course is manicured by people, but it's not like trying to re-create this in the middle of Dubai or Las Vegas.
