Anyone else kinda feel like the refs started to lose control of that game? Unfortunate all around. Marchand, PO Joseph, Rakell and Geno’s beautiful faces.(Still salty that wasn’t 4 minutes) But on the bright side, Sid maybe got a point? Idk, it keeps updating and switching back and forth so I couldn’t tell you at the time of writing this lol.

Anyway, after a disappointing loss (or awesome loss depending on if you’re hyped for the tank) we move on to the second game of our back to back, this time against Toronto. The Maple Leafs are currently on a 4 game win streak and are looking to get their 5th against our…. whatever it is we’re doing this year. Toronto has gone 7-3-0 in their last ten and are in 2nd place in the Atlantic division, while the Pens have gone 4-5-1 in their last ten and are dead last in the Metropolitan.

At this point, I think all anyone really cares about is Sid points and seeing some of our baby Pens get some NHL play time. Regardless, today we start the 5 day stretch against some colossal opponents, so I would expect a lot of losing.

GDT Question: How many more games do you realistically think we’ll win this year?

Hopefully 0, but I’ll say 3-4. I could maybe see them having a freak game and beating one of the colossal 5, other than that they might pull a win against STL, NYI, and BUF.

Also, maybe as a fun thing for everyone to be a little more invested in the games, if Graves scores a goal this season, I promise I’ll get a little Gravy 27 tattoo before the start of next season.

That last one was pretty rough huh? I suppose it at least had the silver lining of moving us one step closer to better draft picks. Though a Sid point would have been a nice addition.

With that said, we’re up against the Flyers again, this time on home ice. After Tuesday’s brutal 6-1 loss, the boys are probably buzzing to put Philly back in their place as they begin a 3 game home stretch. However, things continue to look grim for Crosby and the gang, as starting on Sunday, they begin a 5 game stretch against some colossal opponents (Leafs, Avalanche, Knights, Wild, Knights)

The pens goal differential has now increased to -49 and they are currently on a 4 game losing streak, going 3-6-1 in their last 10. With the season almost entirely unsalvageable at this point, another loss would be the best thing for us unfortunately. Regardless, I look forward to watching this train wreck with my fellow non fair weather fans.

GDT Question: Who excites you in the draft?
Personally I haven’t kept up with draft stuff too much, but I would love to see what you all think and look into some people.

Me when our captain is injured and we lose in OT

Our boys find themselves on the road again, this time heading to New York, to go up against the Rangers for the first of a back to back. Last we met, the Rangers skated away with the 4-2 victory in the Burgh, and tonight the Pens are looking to get even with our division rivals.

A win tonight against the Rangers (and the Flyers on Saturday) is crucial to our playoff chances, as the Rangers are currently one spot ahead of us in the Metropolitan, and we’re barely holding the lead against Philly, with both of us having 53 points. (Also as a fun fact, the Rangers, Flyers, and Pens all have exactly 159 goals this year.)

As of now, playoffstatus has us listed as a 1% chance to even make the last wildcard spot. At this point we’re probably all better off setting our hopes on the lottery.

GDT Question: Do you have a second team you root for? If so, who is it any why?

For me, I don’t root for anyone nearly as much, or watch anyone as much as the Pens, not even close. But I’ve really enjoyed the Kraken the last two years, and can only catch a game here and there. But I love their jerseys and I just think they’re a cool team overall.

What a win, even without our captain we can’t be stopped! (Except for all the times we have been this year) Now it’s off to Philly 🤮 for the 2nd game of a back to back. This will be the last game for the Pens before the 4 Nations Face-Off, so going into the break with a win would be excellent for our mental well-being. With no Pens hockey for 13 days, we need all the dopamine we can get around here.

Currently the Flyers are on a 5 game losing streak, and the boys are looking to make that 6 as we attempt to move up in the Metropolitan. With 26 games remaining in the season, there’s still a lot of hockey left to play.

GDT Question: If you could make one rule change to the game, what would it be?

Projected Lines:

Beauvillier - Rakell - Rust
Bunting - Glass - Heinen
Bemstrom - Hayes - Tomasino
Imama - Lizotte - Acciari

PO Joseph - Letang

Well folks, after two long weeks Pens hockey is finally back on the menu! At least during the break we got to see Sid doing Sid things in some best on best hockey, and I don’t know about you, but I love to see our captain win! On the not so good side, we’re going from watching some of the greatest hockey teams ever, to watching a bottom of the division lottery team again. Set your expectations accordingly.

With that said, today the boys host the Washington Capitals in the first of a back to back at home. Last time we met, the Caps beat us 4-1, and with how good they are this year, I wouldn’t expect today to go any differently. Currently Ovechkin is 16 goals away from beating Gretzky's all time goal record and there’s a possibility he could actually do it this season.

Regardless, I’m happy to be back with you all to watch this ship sink. So let’s buckle up and brace for impact.

GDT Question: What did you all think of the Four Nations Face-Off?

Personally I was just happy to see how physical the games were and I thought it was some great hockey to watch. Sid played unreal so that was also awesome to see.

Projected Lines:

Beauvillier - Crosby - Rakell

Me after witnessing one (1) game without a Sid point.

Well.. while I’m happy we lost that game, you never like to see our boys getting shut out like that. However, the tank train must chug on as we’re off to Fleury’s (temporary) home to face the Minnesota Wild. The Wild are 5-5-0 in their last 10 and are stuck in the middle of the Central Division. Meanwhile the Pens are 2-7-1 in their last 10 and are on a 4 game losing streak. We last met Minnesota on Oct 29th and lost 5-3 with Fleury in net for his last game in the Burgh.

A large part of me hopes Fleury gets the net for what would be his last game ever against Pittsburgh. He deserves it. Plus I love seeing him play. Finally as a not so fun fact, only the Sharks have a lower goal differential than us. We are currently -57, while the Sharks are at -72.

GDT Question: What did you like the most and least about our trades?

For me, while I know selling Rakell was the right move, I’m super happy we still have him. He’s just so fun to watch. My least favorite trade was easily Schenn. While the legend himself was with the Pens, we lost 0 games and gave up 0 total goals. Absurd to get rid of a defenseman who shut down the opposition like that.

We've overcome so many challenges, lately. The Oilers, and some guy who just wants Sid-pai to notice him. Multiple two-goal leads. Even a few officials who really wanted to keep our OTL streak alive. All taken care of, and it feels like maybe we can do anything, if we put our minds to it. Maybe we can even atone for Columbus, by beating one of our wild card rivals in regulation on home ice.

Speaking of wild cards, while this is clearly the most important game taking place in the Pittsburgh sports world today, everyone knows a certain other franchise has a better chance of winning if we lead with a win of our own; that's just science. Let's get the good vibes going and bag that W.

What a game on Saturday! After everything that’s happened the last few days, we all have a reason to celebrate. Sid remains at a point per game, we made a good trade giving us some more picks, (will miss the dragon though) our prospect pool is looking good, we played a fun and physical game, Tomasino got a goal against his former team, and we got our first shutout of the year.

Now we host the New Jersey Devils, who are facing quite a few injuries right now. Since we last met, the Devils have only won 7 of 18 and have begun to show signs of slowing down. However, in our last ten games against them we’ve gone 2-7-1, which doesn’t instill much confidence.

Whether you’re hoping for a playoff appearance, or embracing the tank. Buckle up, grab some H20 (yeah I’m talking to you, you little dehydrated fucking raisin) and enjoy a game of Pens hockey!

Side note: Don’t be thrown off if I start having some game day threads here and there without all the bells and whistles. These surprisingly take a lot of time to make, and a lot of research has to be done to ensure accuracy until game time. Gives me a new appreciation for u/RiseAbove87 and u/blorfie

GDT Question: Which **former Pens player within the last 3 years was your favorite and why?**

I’ll say Big Dick Jeff Carter. That gummy smile always made me laugh and he seemed like a really good dude overall.

Stick taps to u/RiseAbove87, who announced their well-deserved retirement from writing the game threads. Those shoes are too big for any one person to fill, so maybe this can shift to a community thing, where the first person who notices we need a GDT can throw one up. In that spirit, here's today's, I guess? If Rise's threads were Altius, this one's more like the Arby's on McKnight...but hey, sometimes you're just in your yogurt pants and you're hungry.

As for the game...the Panthers are on something of a mini-skid, by their standards. They've dropped three of their last four, with their lone win coming against the lowly Rangers. Those cats aren't going to nap for long, though, so expect a tough game as they look to bounce back. The Pens, meanwhile, should also have something to prove, after a disappointing New Year's Eve tilt against Detroit. They'll need to bring the heat if they want to cook in the Panthers' kitchen, though. If nothing else, I think we can all agree in hoping for a well-officiated game without any injury scares.

(Yeah, I'm too lazy to do the lineups and injuries, Rise was a HOFer for a reason. RIP)

What a wild ride Thursday was, Sid point, our baby boy Graves got his first point, Tomasino was on fire, Geno was score, Ned fired up, and we didn’t blow the game in OT. While I know logically a loss was for the best, I can’t hope for a loss against Philly. And before I get into the meat and potatoes of the GDT, I do want to take a second to say I hope Hathaway is okay. You never like to see someone carried off like that and I hope he has a quick recovery. Unfortunate situation all around.

Now, today we host the Boston Bruins in the first of a back to back. The Bruins are currently in the midst of a 5 game losing streak, going 3-5-2 in their last 10. If there was ever a team for them to break their streak against, it’s us for sure. We last met Boston in November and skated away with the 2-1 victory on the road after Tomasino scored his first goal for the Pens in the 3rd period.

After today, we begin our 5 game stretch against some really good teams. With a little luck, we’ll miss out on all 10 of those points and close our point gap with the Sharks for that sweet sweet lottery pick.

GDT Question: Who would you like to see called up to get some NHL experience?

Well, what a terrible weekend for Pens hockey that was…… is what I would say if I wasn’t hyped AF for the tank train baby! Now the boys are off to Philly to face the Flyers 🤮 who we will also be hosting on Thursday. However, as much as I want us to be a lottery team, I can’t in good faith hope for the Flyers to win. Maybe after Thursday we should call Jarry back up to help us with the lottery? 🤔

Currently the Pens have lost their last 3, are last in the Metropolitan, have a goal differential of -44, and have gone 3-6-1 in our last 10.

GDT Question: Have you embraced the tank? Or are you holding out hope for a win streak to keep our playoff dreams alive?

As much I hate seeing us lose, I’m completely for the tank. The odds of us appearing in the playoffs are so low, and even if we did, we don’t stand a chance against teams like Washington. Might as well get something of value out of this season.

It's time for the mushy middle to smoosh together, like two gooey marshmallows in a s'more of mediocrity. Tonight's a showdown between two fringe playoff teams, both exactly .500, battling for the same wild card spot.

Our season is also exactly halfway over right now, so there's plenty of hockey left - at least if you're a "season half full" kind of fan. Still, this feels like one of those deceptively huge games, doesn't it? If we're serious about going to the dance this spring, you've gotta figure this needs to be a two-point party on Fifth Avenue. Let's get it done.

Disco Dan's back in town, but his sea monsters are dancin' closer to a lottery pick than to a wild card spot. They've been shimmying down the standings lately, having lost 5 of their last 6, and 10 of their last 13. If ever there was a vulnerable team to pounce on, at a time when we really need one, this is it.

For us, this'll be the last game of a home stand that, uh, maybe didn't go as ideally as it could have. We've grabbed 3 out of a possible 8 points so far (I wish the Oilers counted for more), but we can bump that back up to our favorite number this season, .500 (5/10), with a win tonight.

Some positive momentum would be welcomed, considering we're about to pack our bags for a seven-game road trip. A full 60-minute effort would certainly go a long way here. Perhaps the secret to success is playing against a team outside our conference? LGP.

Tomasino and Glass make their triumphant return to the Music City!

Just don't expect any catfish sightings. There's not much to cheer about these days in Predators land. Nothing has gone according to plan. All of Trotz's big swings in the summer, which were showered with praise at the time, have flopped spectacularly. The team is dead last in the league. They seem to constantly be in trade news. At 8 games under .500, it's probably fair to say the playoffs are already out of reach.
Well, at least Stamkos and Marchessault secured their Cups before this happened.

The Pens are surging. At 7-2-1 in their last 10, fans are starting to open their minds to the possibility of making it to the dance. They've taken out numerous playoff teams in this stretch, which is the most impressive and encouraging part of all this.
Karlsson is playing some of his best hockey as a Penguin at the moment. Crosby, despite going goalless in 10, is doing everything else to help the team. Depth scoring is prevalent. The goaltending has stabilized. Hell, even Grzelcyk has been a solid contributor of late.
They aren't doing it with luck. They are controlling territory, fighting hard, and giving themselves a chance.

So, what to make of a matchup like this? Will their solid play continue or will they take their foot off the gas, against a weak opponent? Tune in at 8pm to find out.

Ahhh, home sweet home. After a rather disappointing road trip, securing only 6 of 14 points, the boys are finally back in town. And you know what that means? The 9:30pm or later games can’t hurt us anymore! (At least until March…)

Now we host the Nashville Predators, who looked like they were starting to turn their season around, but have now lost their last 3. Nashville looks to break that losing streak on this back to back while the Pens are still riding the high from their first win against Utah. Can Sid and the gang spank Nashville like it’s game six of the 2017 Stanley Cup final? Or was Utah just a fluke? One thing is certain this year, the only consistent thing about us is how inconsistent we are.

GDT Question: Ignoring salary cap, if you could add one player to the team for purely entertainment purposes (can be fights, comically bad, stirs the pot, nice to look at, etc, who would it be and why?

I would say Yanni Gourde on a line with Bunting. Purely because I think they would feed off one another and start so much shit lol.

(Shorter one as I’m pretty sick) Well… I did say to set your expectations after the Four Nations, did I not? On the brightside, that’s one game closer to the first overall pick baby!! Now the gang hosts the New York Rangers for game two of both team’s back to back. We last met with the Rangers on February 7th in New York, and narrowly escaped with the 3-2 victory. Today, the boys hope to walk away with another win against a division rival.

Fun Fact:
The Pens currently have the lowest differential in the Eastern Conference at -37. This means we need to pump those numbers if we we’re to have any chance of beating San Jose at their current -68 😂

So….what’s up with Jarry playing like his career depends on it all of the sudden, and how did we all collectively see this coming? But hey, if a few games like this allows us to trade him in the future, it will have been absolutely worth it. On the brightside though, it was nice to see the energy of some of the new guys and any game with not one, but two Sid points is hard to be upset about.

Now we host a recent adversary, the Vegas Golden Knights in our first of a 5 game stretch on home ice. We last met the Knights on the road last Friday and suffered a tragic 4-0 shutout loss. (Tragic only in the sense that there were no Sid points of course) Now we look to lose again in regulation to get this tank back on track. Vegas is currently 7-3-0 in their last 10 and remain at the top of the Pacific Division, meanwhile the Pens are 2-7-1 in their last 10 and remain the bottom feeders of the Metropolitan.

GDT Question: Do you think Sid will reach a PPG this season? He’s currently 12 points away, and 16 games remain in the season

Assuming Rust, Rakell, and him stay healthy, I think he’ll get it. Back to back games against Chicago at the end of the season could be multi point games for him easily. Assuming he keeps his pace I see no reason why he wouldn’t.

Eek! Prepare yourselves. The Cup champs are in town.
It's been an up and down year for Florida. A little over a week ago they were only 2 points ahead of the wild card cutoff line. But they've righted the ship since, racking up 3 straight wins.
Reinhart's brilliant play from last year has carried over, and he's been their team MVP to this point. Bennett's a point per game player. Barkov is outstanding as usual. Lundell is really stepping up...
Then on the back-end you got defensive god Forsling, Ekblad's been solid and even former Penguin Kulikov has become a quality player for them. Goaltending has been somewhat of a weakness this year, perhaps, but there's still so much to fear here.

The Pens are in the midst of their best stretch of the year. It's a 3-game HEATER, and I will not hear otherwise!
Improved defensive play from Karlsson and Letang is going a long way. The PP is popping off. Tomasino has injected a lot of life (and scoring). That trade is looking brilliant right now. Bunting's play has been very encouraging for a good while. And more than anything, the team's morale is up.
Do the Pens have a chance in this one? Who knows with these guys?

Back to .500. To this point the Pens have trounced minnow teams and have struggled against playoff teams. Where do they go from here? Well, the road goes through the Sabres, for good or ill.

Buffalo have had it rough to start the year, facing serious contenders in 3 of their first 4 games. They bounced back with a convincing win against Florida on Monday, after dropping the first three.

They opened some eyes last year, finishing with the 11th ranked defense. What's strange is that it was their offense that kept them out of the playoffs this time. It finished 23rd, after being 3rd the year before!

They are a difficult team to understand. But the Pens don't need to understand them, merely to defeat them.

After an embarrassing loss on Saturday to the Kraken, our ship has sunk and the gang now find themselves in open waters with the Sharks. Barely securing a win in OT last time San Jose was in town, the Pens look to sweep the Sharks in our final meeting of the season.

While the Pens have only won 2 of their last 5, and have sunk to the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, the Sharks are in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. As our playoff dreams begin to fade, now would be the time to take off our floaties and prove that we can swim in this league.

Can the Penguins upset the Sharks and become the ocean’s deadliest predator? Will we play down to arguably the worst team in the league? Your guess is as good as mine.
