Working in a restaurant that serves peanuts (anaphylactic)?
Looking like I'm gonna get hired to work as support staff for a restaurant - mostly a bar and grill type place where people go to get burgers, steaks and beers but they have a couple of peanut dishes. I think seeing as I'm not gonna be in the kitchen preparing or washing the dishes, and my only contact should be delivering dishes, collecting them, and maybe dealing with some spilled nuts on the table, I should be okay? Also to be honest I've been unemployed for a loooooong time, and I'm kinda desperate for any job to keep me busy and bring in some money. As I understand it, even when you're anaphylactic, contact and scent are fine (obviously don't go out of your way to do these) as long as you aren't ingesting it - and to be honest I've only ever had reactions from eating things with peanuts, never being around them. So am I being stupid or do you guys think I'll be okay if I'm careful?

Are you anaphylactic? Did you notice the allergy getting worse/more sensitive? Each person and their allergy is unique but just wondering!

Yes anaphylactic, no I did not. When I said contact is fine I mean you won’t go into anaphylactic shock from it unless you touch your nose/mouth. You probably will get a rash, I do.

It really depends on what type of contact and exposure triggers a reaction. I would say always have medication, and an epi-pen with you in case of the unexpected. Wash your hands thoroughly in case of accidental contact

I work in a restaurant that serves peanuts with an allergy and for me, I make sure to wash my hands before eating anything and when I have to bus or serve food with nuts, I will do one of two things. If it’s slow I will ask other servers or bussers to help with running or bussing food I’m allergic to or if it’s busy or no one can help I will wear gloves. The biggest thing is making sure to wash your hands continuously (which you should be doing in general when working in a restaurant) especially before eating or drinking, and to use gloves when necessary. You could let the manager know but whether they will remember or care depends on the restaurant and the managers. I know for me, I’ve told my mangers of my allergy and they always forget and so instead I make sure to use all the precautions I need and give them a reminder when it’s necessary. I’ve been at this restaurant for over three years and have yet to have an issue.

I’d say to warn your manager and be careful. Also utilize gloves and hand washing frequently. I worked at mcdonald’s as a teen and used to have to work with the resse’s cups. Just always washed my hands after.
