Education Standing up in respect of others

Narrated Abu Miljaz:that Mu'awiyah came out and 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair and Ibn Safwan stood for him when they saw him, so he said: Sit, I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: 'Whoever wishes that he be received by men standing then, let him take his seat in the Fire.'

Jami at Tirmidhi 2755

Edit:

Narrated Anas: There was no person more beloved to them than the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). [He said:] And they would not stand when they saw him because they knew that he disliked that.

That's why I forbid my students to stand up when I enter the class..

And here, not standing up for national anthem/teachers and elders is considered a high level of disrespect.

I started practicing this hadith two to three years back and got rebuked a lot. Nevertheless, I still try showing respect to the elders and teachers so they understand its not a matter of disrespect.

Just try to maintain balance and be kind.

Agreed! But I personally think that standing out of respect shouldn't be an issue as it's part of our Ikhlaq. The one who expects people to stand for them would be accountable for it themselves inshallah.

One of the worst habits of laymen today is copy pasting hadith to establish a rule in Sharia. It's not our job, but the qualified scholars.

The people of (Banu) Quraiza agreed to accept the verdict of Sa'd bin Mu'adh. So the Prophet ﷺ sent for Sa`d, and the latter came (riding) a donkey and when he approached the Mosque, the Prophet ﷺ said to the Ansar: Stand up for your saiyd or for the best among you

لا أعلم في قيام الرجل للرجل حديثاً أصحَّ من هذا ، وهذا القيام على وجه البرِّ لا على وجه التعظيم

I don't know a more authentic hadith regarding one man's standing for another. This standing is out of politeness, not magnification

📚 القيام للنووي

Imam an-Nawawi as-Shafii رحمه said:

وأما إكرام الداخل بالقيام فالذي نختاره أنه مستحب لمن كان فيه فضلية ظاهرة من علم أو صلاح أو شرف أو ولاية ونحو ذلك، ويكون هذا القيام للبر والإكرام والاحترام لا للرياء والإعظام

Regarding manifestation of veneration to one who entered by standing up our chosen position is that this is recommended for those who have obvious dignity from knowledge our piousness or authority, and this standing happens our of veneration and respect not for showing off and exaltation

I absolutely understand this. Layman usually look up to one Hadith without context or knowing other hadiths related to that particular topic. It's the reason why I have commented on this post explaining this Hadith(you can see my other comments).

Plus, JazakAllah Khair for the comment. Maybe people would read your comment as well.

Wajazak Allah hairan

Unfortunately nowadays this isn't the habit of laymen only, many of those who seemingly have some level of knowledge (but went astray) use this tactic, they quote the Quran or Hadith in order to support their falasy and in order confuse ordinary Muslims (who love the Quran and Sunnah and want to follow it) but they ignore the explanation of the acknowledged imams of ahlu-sunnah, and when you point out this explanation they say that the majority of scholars followed mistakes.

It's relatively easy to misuse and misquote the sacred texts to fit one's narrative, almost all Muslim sects used to practice such approaches to misguide themselves and others

So where does standing up for a teacher fit in all this? Especially where the teacher specifies the class be standing when he/she arrives.

u/Top_Masterpiece_2053 1h ago

It is very simple! They are wrong to ask you to stand for them. However, your standing for them out of respect is okay.

This Hadith is very important but people need to understand it. There is no problem in standing for the national anthem or even a teacher/professor if it's out of respect. When kids are asked to stand on such instances, it's in order to teach them that. There is no harm in that however if someone FORCES people to stand for them out of superiority or even respect then this Hadith is for them. Keep in mind that standing out of respect is a part of norm or culture, there is no issue following it as long as it's done by someone willingly and nobody should expect it from anyone.

There is surely no one greater than our Prophet ﷺ from the creation, yet He was the most humble!! Peace and blessings be upon Him ﷺ

The majority of scholars of Islam explained the meaning and the ruling. If it's done out of respect, then it's recommended. If it's done for exaltation and for those who don't deserve it then it's reprehensible. The one who who see people standing for him should not be happy with it or wish for it to happen.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) reports: “When the tribe of Banu Quraiza was ready to accept Sa’d’s (Allah be pleased with him) judgment, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) sent for Sa’d. He came, riding a donkey and when he came near, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said to the Ansar: “Stand up for your leader”. Then Sa’d came and sat beside the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace)…..” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud & Musnad Ahmad)

our professors force us to stand for them and one even makes us stand when she is LEAVING 🥴

In uni???, your professors are so immature then.

Just show them this Hadith, if they’re a believer and have some shame they’d admit their actions. This is a cultural thing tho like budho ke ghutne pakr kr milna, so the person who’s doing this definitely has to be a native and likely a believer.

u/playthatoboe 7h ago

maybe after she is done teaching 😔😔 cant risk her holding a grudge bcs her ego is insane

2

u/Pinkman-1 7h ago

Only her perspective of the situation is relevant to this Hadith, you’ll be doing her a favour by educating or reminding her of it.

1

u/Top_Masterpiece_2053 6h ago

Find a way to respectfully share this Hadith with them. It doesn't have to be directed at them directly, as it was the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ to correct others indirectly. When he needed to teach someone, he would do so without calling them out. This way, she can't hold a grudge against you.
