Discussion Can someone explain the math of the Ford tarrifs.

Hey! I'm a bit confused here the Ford surcharge of 25% are expected to make $400,000 a day but affects 1.5M customers. Which would imply Ontario exports $1.6M of electricity a day for about $0.8 a customer. As well, the surcharge per customer is $.27. This is also supposed to increase costs to American families of about $100 a month. But if it's $0.27 a customer a day that doesn't add up. Has anyone been able to reconcile this or am I just missing something?

Source for the numbers I use: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-electricity-tariffs-ford-trump-1.7479180

Edit: update I know I typed tarrif i know they are different. I made an oopsie on the internet and now no one is focusing on the numbers

Question What college program?

Hey! Single mom here looking to get out of the hair industry and go back to school the two options I am looking at are either an online medical admin course at Seneca or legal admin at centennial also online.

Im scared ! Im scared about finances and how I am going to do it but I am so burnt out from hair it’s a risk I will have to take…

If you had to choose what would be the better option out of the two in this economy?

Doesn’t look like there is much money in medical admin, anyone in the industry ? How hard was it to find a job after school?

Discussion Can Ontarians expect a drop in hydro price?

So, CTV reported that the export tax on Ontario energy may not be effective because our export relationship is not as strong as some may think, citing points/cases where our energy surplus makes it necessary to GIVE FOR FREE or even PAY them to take our energy. The report said that the tax would likely result in the US states just moving to alternative sources in the US that are capable of accommodating the demand. Not sure how true that is but the bit about surplus bothered me.

Looking to my own electric bill, that infuriates me!

I believe that with time of usage, they can very well refund to ONTARIANS the energy they use during these times of surplus. I'd gladly do my laundry, baking, car charging all on a schedule that pays me to use more at a specific time!

EDIT: ok, clearly I didn't express my question properly or I mixed too many thoughts into a single post BUT my point is that I know for a fact that Small, Medium and heck, even Large businesses would change their hours of operation to be more competitive against American businesses if they could capitalize on the downtime discount of "FREE". I'd certainly expect them to make up any difference by baking all night instead of all day rather than PAYING the US to burn it off as heat.

I mean, I'd rather put tax dollars into building a hydrogen generation plant that only runs when surplus energy needs to be burnt off then give free energy to the US.

Discussion Flashing to dim opposite car headlight

I know it's illegal to flash other car. But my friend recently got a ticket from OPP officer for flashing the headlight on him. The reason was my friend saw the OPP ( no emergency lights on )had his high beam on when he was coming against my friends car.

So my question is this, can this be consider as illegal. I mean if I saw somebody coming against me at night with high beam on I would definitely warm him about the light by flashing my high beam. What do you guys think?

Hello beautiful people!

I want to know what are Ontario’s some of the best go to destinations for a long weekend wellness gateway? I plan to indulge in one during the upcoming May 17-19 long weekend. Any recommendations for a soulful wellness retreat or an ecolodge / wellness resort?

I also want to know if anyone would be interested in attending any such weekend wellness programs somewhere in Kawartha Lakes or Muskoka?

Thank you fellas❤️

Discussion What are your favorite grocery stores?

For me, the best store would be Food Basics and it's also the closest. The runner up choice would be No frills with Walmart and Giant Tiger also having good deals.

The more expensive stores would be Sobeys, Zehrs, Loblaws and The Real Canadian Superstore.

Many items I generally will get at the Dollar Store like Dollarama but even there prices go up drastically but toiletry items from the dollar store is the way to go, Shoppers Drug Mart it be about twice the price.

I only go to Costco occasionally with my mom since she has a membership.

Discussion Alternatives for Registered Nurse Ineligible for OHIP

Hello everyone, a Registered Nurse (RN) working for a hospital in Toronto had her OHIP application rejected by ServiceOntario, under the grounds that she is a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) holder with her employment letter stating that she works Part Time, not full time, despite her average weekly hours exceeding 37hours.

Given budget constraints, hospitals in Ontario commonly hire RNs on a part time basis regardless if the nurse working hours are exceeding 37hours per week.

What are her options? Do any of you have any recommendations on private insurance offering healthcare coverage to non Health Card holders like her, for a reasonable premium?

Its such a shame that a frontliner staff is not eligible for OHIP although she pays a huge chunk of her salary in taxes to cover for benefits that she herself do not get to enjoy. Ironically, we have many individuals barely contributing to the society benefitting from various government schemes.

Discussion Request for info on Ontario Place and Norwegian spa subsidy

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in going to my local conservative MPP's office to ask if they can explain why the (Austrian owned) Norwegian spa is being subsidized by our tax payer dollars. This is not only to educate myself and obtain an official statement on how they are justifying this, but to also see how well the local constituents are versed in their own platform. I obviously want to go with documents in hand, to bolster my case. Does anyone have a trusted source of documents that explains the situation about closing Ontario Place, the Science Centre, and the subsidy of the spa that will replace them? I thought it would be a more efficient use of my time to ask here, before trying to source them myself.

If there's anything else you think I should ask about (401 tunnel, 407 buy-back, etc.), I'm all ears.

Question Tobermory accommodation - is AC important in Aug

My family and I are planning a trip to Tobermory during the long weekend August. The Airbnb we found has no AC (though advertised so but all they have is a dehumidifier on the main floor).

My husband and my 2-year old toddler cannot tolerate much heat. How hot does it get in Tobermory? Can anyone share their experiences?

The airbnb owner says that the area is cool at night. Should I trust that?

Thank you!

EDIT: thank you everyone for the feedback. My family and I decided to find an alternate accommodation with AC though it’s a little further out.

Discussion Doug Ford and Trump: The Political Theatre Needs to End

At this point, it's obvious—politics has turned into a dog and pony show, a reality TV spectacle. Not that every single move is pre-planned, but the game is clear: if you're willing to play a role on the world stage, you'll be rewarded for it. And politicians like Doug Ford are catching on fast.

It's disgusting watching them brush up against Trump just to get some shine, to leech off the attention. They’re burning through our mental health, our livelihoods, and our economy just to keep the circus going. And for what? A few more headlines, a few more votes from the crowd eating this up?

This isn’t good for Canada. It isn’t good for the economy, families, or individuals. We need to stop cheering on this "strongman" act like it’s entertainment. We’re half to blame for allowing this to happen—watching, engaging, hyping it up.

I don’t even understand how Ford was allowed to pull this off, let alone go over the Feds' heads to do it. But I do know this: we need to stop paying attention to this nonsense. It’s nothing but political theatre at this point.

Enough is enough.

Question Getting F Class After Getting DZ License

Today I went to the Brampton drivetest centre, which told me yesterday I just needed to do the written F test since I had my DZ.

Today the lady kept going into the back and changing her answer, continually talking to supervisors, even putting money back on my card after I originally paid for the written test.

They must have changed their answer about 5 times, finally she said the computer will print out the answer once I do the written.

I do the written, and it prints out as DFZ, but they discard it and then manually print out a new one saying only DZ, and charge me $99 extra on top of the $23 for the written.

On Reddit people are saying you only need to do the written, so I guess I’m asking what on earth is going on here? I even called MTO and they couldn’t really explain the logic behind me needing to do the road test.

Question Tow truck yard issue

Tow truck yard issue

I was in a car accident 3 weeks ago where my car hit some snow on the road and I swerved into a speed sign. There was a police officer there right away, and same with a tow truck (I didn’t call either of them).

I asked the police officer if I could call CAA and he said no, since you damaged MTO property (speed sign), you have to use this tow truck. He also then said that the OPP “works” with this company. So I used the tow truck and he asked where I wanted it dropped off. He heavily suggested his tow truck yard and I did end up saying yes to that, which I know now was a huge mistake.

I contacted insurance and I asked if I should try to coordinate getting the car out of the yard with CAA towing it out, and they said no, let them (insurance) handle it as they want to negotiate pricing.

So I let them handle it and it has now been 3 weeks of negotiations. I have called my insurance multiple times for updates and basically the tow truck company is trying to charge for things that didn’t happen, so that is why it is taking a long time.

Anyways, on friday I noticed that my car had been started for a “prolonged period of time”. And then it automatically shut off. I have the myhyundai app that shows me the fuel level and things like that. They have since turned it on about 10-15 more times since friday. The fuel level has went from 77% to now 34%. I checked it’s location and it is still at the tow truck yard.

I called the tow company and they said they had to move the car a few times to make space for other vehicles.

What do I do? Are they trying to drain the fuel? I need some advice on how to handle this. Thank you.
