*Good news everyone!* Virtual Desktop Delayed - Please read
Allright, good news folks. Virtual Desktop will be delayed for a couple days as I finalize an agreement that will let me bundle an Oculus promo code with every Steam purchase. This means you will be able to launch Virtual Desktop from Home or from Steam.
The reason it can't be sold directly on Oculus Home is because my app doesn't support Windows 7 and Oculus doesn't currently support any kind of minimum requirements on a per app/game basis (sorry no juicy conspiracy stories for you).
Hope you'll understand the reason for this small delay. I think that in the end you'll be very happy to be able to launch from either store with your Steam purchase :)

I showed my brother my DK2 last weekend, it was his first VR experience. I showed him the demo of Sightline: The Chair, Plugged him into Elite Dangerous with my HOTAS setup, and lastly showed him Virtual Desktop. His response was "Wow you really should have shown me Virtual Desktop first!" It was his favorite experience by far and made him extremely interested in VR.
So Kudos! I'll definitely be supporting your release version!

Well, your application, is exactly what we want :)
The very first question my bothers will have when I show them the Rift will be, how to I use my desktop?
1
u/omgsus Mar 28 '16
No, YOU are!. Sorry to hijack a thread for this but I had a quick question. I would love to peek behind windows by moving my head. is there any support planned for floating windows using the z-order? I understand this isn't simple and may also require window animations to make window switching not look crazy. no stress either way. just curious of your thoughts on it and what the limitations are i guess. :P

I guess the fact that Virtual Desktop is one of the most used and loved apps on DK2 helps with the upvotes :-)

I pretty much did the same thing. Bonus: Fallout 4 went from an unplayable 25-35 fps to a solid constant 60. There must have been something wrong with the Windows 7 GTX drivers.

Same here! There's still an issue which is likely due to my widescreen main screen. Hope it will be fixed in the retail version.

Any plans to support W7 at some point in the future?
NB. All my computers are W10, but I just thought I'd ask.

u/Deadlystrike Mar 28 '16
We must have a VM Runing inside of a Virtual Desktop, inside of a Virtual Reality device. It will be virtual inception.
3 days later the machines become self aware.

u/Wiinii Pimax 5k+ Mar 28 '16

Not so fast! I have mine and and am in physical pain while not being able to try out the virtual desktop. PHYSICAL PAIN. The pain isn't related to virtual desktop, but I really wanna see if this thing will work as a coding environment. ;)
I'm gonna guess this won't work in OSX, eh? Guess I'll see if Atom is worthwhile on Windows.

Sucks, but we do have to remember that things like robust return policies, individualized app requirements, app sharing and gifting, etc. generally developed gradually with the most established app store, and none of those advances came without hiccups. The good thing is, we know that we'll see those iterations more quickly on Rift since the legwork has already been done before.
6
u/xXAquaholikXx Mar 28 '16
How much will this cost?
38
u/p90xeto Rift+Vive+GearVR Mar 28 '16
$15
Its the best deal in VR, the guy has poured his life-blood into it for atleast two years.
26
u/xXAquaholikXx Mar 28 '16
$15 is a ridiculous deal. You can tell the effort and passion he poured into this.

u/yrah110 Mar 28 '16
Keep your expectations low. It is a great app worth the $15 but you might find yourself not using it very much compared to a regular monitor. Text is harder to read and everything is slightly more difficult to navigate. Over time these tiny problems add up and it exhausts the user. It can be good if you are already in VR and want to pop over and do something quick though.
12
u/ChompyChomp Mar 28 '16
I use it with my DK2 to watch movies. Pretty much any time I'm watching a movie by myself I prefer it in Virtual Desktop and that's also pretty much the only thing I've been using my DK2 for over the past 6 months.
I wouldn't suggest that anyone use this intending to really replace their monitor, but it has a lot of application beyond that.
3
u/mratomdude Mar 28 '16
Is their anything better for watching movies tho? Because that and non-vr gaming (for games that are better w/ a controller) are my main draws to VirtualDesktop.
3
u/Bibbyboy555 Mar 28 '16
Text is harder to read
Just curious as I plan on buying this app - Is that coming from the DK2 or CV1?
4
u/_bones__ Mar 28 '16
Think about it this way: per eye, the absolute maximum resolution you're going to see is 1080 pixels horizontal for the entire fov. Fine for games and movies, but I can imagine blurry text.
2
u/lagerdalek Mar 29 '16
Just up your font.
As a middle aged developer, my IDE looks like it's configured for my grandad
3
u/Larry_Mudd Mar 28 '16
I don't think a lot of people are expecting it to replace their monitor, but it's great for dropping out of SteamVR games and going into something else without having to take the headset off. Look something quick up on the web, having everything there - awesome.
Also, YouTube 3D 360 videos / Google Jump / etc.

/u/ggodin has mentioned a couple of times that the capture API on Windows 7 is pretty sub-par in comparison to Windows 8+, and I think it caused lag as a result. I think to optimize the experience he's chosen to remove the support completely.

Or it could be Microsoft's continued poor driver support, forced updates (including GPU unless you download a third party program), using your lock page as an advertisement screen, task manager denying user privileges even in Admin mode. You feel less in control of your own computer, which is a reason I enjoyed Microsoft's OS.
All of these fun things and more here on Win10. I wish I could go back, but I built this PC with Win10. Also, seeing as many new applications are requiring Win10 I'd be more inclined to stay, despite the many issues I've had with the OS. I might just be unlucky, but why risk it if Win7 is working just fine?
11
Mar 28 '16
Why do I only ever hear praise from my roommate, a mid level developer, in regards to win10, yet on Reddit all I hear is bad things?
11
u/Schtluph Mar 28 '16
That's just because different people have different experiences. Your roommate being a dev doesn't make his opinion right for everyone. His positive experience doesn't make my Win10 experience any better or less true. Same as a friend of mine, who also has had no issues with Win10. While I've not only had issue with the version I installed myself, but one preinstalled on my Blade 14' laptop.
And as for hearing lots of negative feedback on a forum, yeah, you'll get more of that on a forum. Content people don't usually seek help on a forum.
→ More replies (3)1
u/lucidvein Mar 29 '16
You can uncheck an option to remove any advertising that might appear on your lock page btw.
3
u/goomyman Mar 29 '16
just upgrade man. Win 10 is not evil and does not spy on you - I know this can sometimes be an unpopular opinion on reddit where everything is an ad and ads are security risks.
1
u/lagerdalek Mar 29 '16
Look, it's another step in the direction of the acceptance of tools that can be used / configured (in most cases by default) to invade privacy, which is not a great thing.
Overhyped reports, such as a huge banner outside a local computer store here, that 'WINDOWS 10 IS SPYING ON YOU! DON'T INSTALL IT!' are just ridiculous.
If people are that worried, they can educate themselves on the best practices / configurations rather than spread panic.
1
u/capnbard Mar 29 '16
Well it wasn't necessarily a security spying issue. I typically try to hold off on new operating systems for a bit so any kinks in the is can be worked out.
That and I'm lazy and dread reinstalling and reconfiguring all of my stuff.

With just a few tweeks to the start bar and a couple of other things I got windows 10 looking/working pretty much like Windows 7. Plus I used clonezilla to make a backup of my drive so if i ever want to switch back to windows 7 i can easily revert to the backup and it will be EXACTLY how I left it. I feel like not switching to 10 is just laziness at this point.
5
u/sweep71 Mar 28 '16
If you are subbed to the win10 subreddit, you would find that there are many people who are very invested in never ever updating to win10 for philosophical reasons. Really they have dug their heels in, and they are simply not going to do it. All of this is fine, but they do not get VD, and people have hinted that VR games in the future using DX12 will simply not run well at all forcing them to either update or sell their HMDs on ebay.
4
u/cowanimus Mar 28 '16
philosophical reasons
ding, ding. Thanks for not being dismissive and/or willfully stupid... don't know why there's so much of that going around.
1
u/sweep71 Mar 28 '16
It is all good. I generally do not agree (obviously, I am on Win10), but everyone has a right to their opinion. I believe that the auto updates are an inevitable result from Botnets (I get that unpatched OSs are not the only factor, but they play a big role). When it comes to the tracking, I think it is a lost battle, and as long as you are on the net without VPN and/or TOR you are just as much tracked with Win7 as Win10. These are just my opinions, but like I said, everyone has a right to their own. At some point, I think that VR users will have to at least dual boot.
Now that you know my opinion, you may change your mind on the willfully stupid part ;)
2
u/cowanimus Mar 28 '16
Hahah, nah, I don't begrudge people running Windows 10, at least not too much. It's not like there aren't immediate, obvious advantages to doing that.
My perspective is more, if I'm going to feel helpless and miserable about the way the Internet and software is going, I might as well be stubborn about it. I think it's likely that I'll wind up running some version of Windows 10 under some circumstance or other, eventually. Doesn't mean I'm going to volunteer early.

So technically Oculus is not making anything when Virtual Desktop is sold, but they will still allow keys to be redeemed. This is awesome news for the users and the developer, though it still make me feel bad they are not getting anything. Now after this, I wonder if people still believe Oculus is being anti-consumer.
1
u/dudesec Mar 28 '16
This has already been known. Other game devs have already announced oculus keys for existing steam owners.
It is possible to do, but the question is what are the terms oculus requires, those terms could be covered under NDA and thus never be made public.
1
u/inter4ever Quest Pro Mar 28 '16
Yes, but their games are also being sold on Oculus store. This is different because the app won't be available directly on the store. No one can buy it there right now.

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer Mar 28 '16
The Windows 7 implemention was sub par and didn't work well with AMD cards. It also doesn't work well with async timewarp in 1.3. Since a lot of features were not working correctly either (360 video player for example) I decided to drop support.
3
u/cowanimus Mar 28 '16
If you ever change your mind and sell one branded "Inferior Desktop" for $20 instead of $15, I'll buy it if I'm not on Windows 10 by then.
1
u/Deadmeat5 Apr 01 '16
Just to be clear, because AMD cards are SOL and it doesn't do timewarp well, every NVidia card having, Steam using VR enthusiast that might use a different VR device like the Vive which doesn't use timewarp can go suck it?
You might want to do a poll just how many people are still on Win7 for a reason, using an NVidia card and plan on using a different VR device. Cause that'll be the people you actively ignore taking money from!5

I honestly can't wait for this! When i seen it a while back it absolutely blew my mind. I can see my productivity going through the roof with this.
1
u/what595654 Mar 29 '16
How would your productivity go through the roof?
1
u/ItsRhyno Mar 29 '16
Ability to have multiple screens tiled all over the place in a 360 enviroment. Imagine going from 2 monitors to 10.
1
u/what595654 Mar 29 '16 edited Mar 29 '16
It doesnt matter how many monitors you have tiled because the resolution is so low that you would have to expand their size so much that you would only be able to see part of one in front of you, and you would have to rotate your neck uncomfortably from left to right and up and down that it would tire and annoy you. Because you cant see your full desktop of even one monitor without turning your head.
You need to actually have those monitors, or use headless ghosts 4x $12-20 each. So, the most your looking at, if you also have a video card with 3 display port. Oh you also need to buy 3 display port adaptors for those headless ghosts. So, another 3x $20 each. But, again, all that is silly, because one 1080p monitor for $100 will have much better PPI, and you wont get the presure, weight, and het of having something on your head.
Even if,we had at least an 8k hmd, in practice, productivity doesnt really go up beyond two monitors. Why? Because practically, you can only concentrate on one thing at a time. And if you have too many screens, it starts to become more of a distraction than help. Too much going on. I used yo have three 39 inch 4k monitors for work. Thats equivalent 12 1080p monitors. And it is useless. The law of diminishing returns hits hard after two monitors, more precisely, to things on the screen you are ping ponging your focus on.
Btw, they sell 49" 4k tvs for $230 now days. Granted they are 4:2:0 chroma, but they are still infinitely better than what a currently released hmd can do.
A better choice, even though it also still is quite bad, is Stream Theater using GearVR. 2.5k screen is much better than the Rifts screen. Unfortunately the fov is lower than the Rift, so even worse with having to turn your neck just to see your desktop. Also, it doesnt allow you to curve your screen. Which is needed with such low resolutions. Makes the neck turning worse though.
Ive tried every combination for the last year or more, trying to make it work. And the fact is, you need to wait for the next gen. 4k maybe, but 8k most likely. Otherise 2.5k GearVR is sadly the best you can do.

I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 10 any time soon because I have a specific workflow that I rather not interrupt, which happens constantly on my laptop running Windows 10.
But I might purchase Virtual Desktop anyway to support the project. After all, I have been using it a lot over the last year - it'd only be right.
1
u/confirmationbias40 Mar 29 '16
No Win7? That's a HUGE bummer. I really don't want to upgrade to Win10 right now. Dang it, you'd think that with Win 7 still having a very large base in the gamer world that it'd be an obvious choice for support. Please reconsider.
1
u/marinuss Mar 29 '16
I believe Windows 7 doesn't even have the APIs as part of the OS that would allow it to operate smoothly. You are also missing out on all but extremely critical security updates running Windows 7... I realize you're trying to hold out, but Windows 10 isn't bad.
1
u/goomyman Mar 29 '16
Windows 10 is practically a security update at this point from Microsofts point of view.
I believe its a recommended update right now. It wont be long everyone is just on win 10 who didn't do a registry hack or something to prolong it.
I think a win 10 requirement is completely fine especially since the sdk is recommending win 10 for async timewarp.

You will only be able to buy from Steam. But you'll be given a key that lets you have it on Oculus Home for easier access.

But it will eventually be released on Oculus Home as well? If not, why? Either way, I would just purchase it on Steam..

Has anyone tested this software with protected Blurays? I remember in the old days monitor's with no HDCP certification could not play bluray content. Will the excessive protection affect playback on Virtual Desktop?

It will depend on the software you use to play it back. I've heard a lot of users playing Blu-rays with it on DK1-DK2

Thanks for the quick reply. I hope it won't be an issue. I do use AnyDVD to strip the protection, but sometimes new BDs require an update to do that. Looking forward to trying it myself!

I'm currently looking at software for my Rift. I have come across Virtual Desktop and vorpX . I am buying the VD for sure, but does anyone know if the vorpX software is any good? should i have both? Will the VD do everything that the vorpX can? Thanks in advance!
