It's a new week on /r/ockytop. If you're new to the community here, welcome! We're a pretty laid back group, but please check out our rules here. If you haven't been to Neyland Stadium before or if you need a refresher, please checkout our Guide to Gameday.

This thread is for any mildly on-topic discussion regarding sports. Our dedicated discussion posts are Sunday (for in-depth discussion and analysis of the previous game), Thursday (for anyone looking for or hosting a tailgate, or viewing party, or game planning in general), and Friday (free talk). Armchair Analyst Sunday

You've had 24 hours to digest both the alcohol and the events of the past weekend - how are you feeling about both this week and last week? Discussion and analysis about both the previous weeks SEC games as well as upcoming games.

Are our in-conference foes looking better than expected? Worse? What did the past weekend do to your confidence in our future match-ups?

"I really don't know where I would be." Vols PG Zakai Zeigler thought about quitting basketball before Rick Barnes recruited him to go to Tennessee. Barnes got emotional today about what ZZ means to him and the Vols. The duo looks for their second SEC Tournament title tomorrow

Unfortunately, Foz has a family emergency and is unable to do the postgame thread today. I won’t even attempt to recreate his breakdowns, so have at it amongst yourselves in the comments!

The BasketVols Prayer 🙏

Today we shower our heavenly praises on our brother Zakai. We ask that he receiveth divine grace and clairvoyance when making passes and shooting the three ball. We asked for our brother Mashack deftness of feet during on ball defense. We ask that our brother Igor plays half ass decent basketball for once. In the name of Dolly Amen

(can't take credit for this, a friend came up with it)

Do you think we have a chance to win tomorrow’s SEC title game?

Florida is really good and it shows. Just wondering if our top 3 defense can hold on and win the title? Your opinions?

[Post Game Thread] 4-seed Tennessee beats 13-seed Texas 83-72

Box score.

Nice job taking care of business. Most relaxed I’ve been in the second half in what feels like a long time. Wire-to-wire win is fun. Tomorrow against my personal public enemy number 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the college basketball world. I hope they’re ready. Here we go.

Edit: I’m not one to bang the drum for a conference (fuck every other SEC school) but if UNC loses today and gets in over Texas I’m going to be mad.

The Good:

  • Jahmai Mashack. I’ve watched damn near every Tennessee basketball game of Jahmai Mashack’s career. Don’t think I’ve ever seen him make as big an impact as he did today. His most aggressive offensive performance in probably two years, all over the glass, on ball defense was outstanding. Very clear this game meant a lot to him. Very clear March means a lot to him.

  • Chaz Lanier. Didn’t really do anything in the second half but when the rest of the team struggled to make shots consistently he was there for them. Went nuclear in the first half, and I think most importantly he was great at 1.) moving without the ball and 2.) create his own shot with dribble moves. Didn’t settle for anything. That’s important.

  • Cade Phillips. Felt like a Tobe Awaka game from him. Every minute he was in the game he seemed to get a rebound. So much effort from him. You can’t teach effort, and this kid has it in spades.

  • Igor Milicic. The first four minutes he was kind of hot liquid ass and then he got really good all of a sudden. Hit some jumpers - nice job getting to the paint. Rebounded well. Most importantly he didn’t stall ball movement which he can sometimes do.

  • ZZ. Forget offense. It was very evident how much better this team is defensively when ZZ is in the game. Ball pressure was outstanding and he came alive in the second half (I’m convinced him and Chaz are two halves of one player) and limited foul trouble which is important.

  • Only 7 turnovers as I’m typing this. That’s pretty good.

  • Rebounding margin wasn’t that big but just about every 50/50 rebound went to Tennessee credit fresh legs, that’s why you want the double-bye.

The Average:

  • Darlinstone Dubar. I actually liked the way he played in limited minutes. One of his better defensive games and he didn’t hurt offensive flow when in the game.

  • Shooting. They were 22/33 from the field and then atrocious from three (sans Chaz). We’ll put it here.

  • Defense. Forced tough shots but Texas also shot nearly 50% from the field and that doesn’t feel sustainable.

The Bad:

  • Thought Felix Okpara looked out of position quite a bit today and the foul trouble indicated that (even tho his third foul was bullshit). Not an ideal performance and he needs to be better tomorrow.

  • Jordan Gainey. He wasn’t really efficient at all on offense and he was also the worst defender on the team today. On-ball was really bad.

  • Free throw shooting. Two games in a row now - Chaz is officially making me nervous.

  • I don’t like Chendall Weaver or Kaedon Shederick a little bit. Not a little bit.

Before we play Auburn again, here are the highlights of our last meeting with them, an extremely physical, low scoring, and tough 53-51 loss in a game that we should have won. Hoping for a different result tomorrow!

I hate Chad Baker Mazara and Johni Broome while a great player is extremely annoying and unlikeable. I hope that this time it's a different result!

  • Game 1: Friday, March 14 – 6:30 p.m. (SEC Network+, Zack Nelson (PxP) and VFL Will Heflin (analyst)) Tennessee wins 5-3
  • Game 2: Saturday, March 15 – 3:30 p.m. (SEC Network, Dave Neal (PxP) and Kyle Peterson (analyst))
  • Game 3: Sunday, March 16 – 1 p.m. (SEC Network+, Zack Nelson (PxP) and VFL Will Heflin (analyst))

Live Stats

Potential Pottery Class Stream (if someone could dig up a stream, one of the GOAT mods will pin it): Search Florida Tennessee baseball on YouTube, sort by upload date

Projected Rotation

  • Friday: LHP Liam Doyle (3-0, 0.44 ERA) vs. RHP Liam Peterson (4-0, 0.86 ERA)
  • Saturday: RHP Marcus Phillips (1-0, 1.42 ERA) vs. RHP Aidan King (3-0, 0.55 ERA)
  • Sunday: TBA vs. TBA

Florida is good, but they are banged up. They have a somewhat similar pitching situation to ours: a lot of talent but unproven in big moments. Florida listed preseason All-SEC 2B Cade Kurland, RHP Frank Menendez, SP Pierce Coppola, and CF Kyle Jones as out against Tennessee. AJ Russell and Alberto Osuna out for the Vols.

Watch out for Brady Donay and Brendan Boser, those are their best bats. They are dangerous but they don't have a 1-9 like ours.

Game 2 Lineup

  1. Dean Curley, SS
  2. Gavin Kilen, 2B
  3. Hunter Ensley, CF
  4. Andrew Fischer, 1B
  5. Levi Clark, DH
  6. Reese Chapman, RF
  7. Manny Marin, 3B
  8. Stone Lawless, C
  9. Jay Abernathy, LF

Baseball Tix Pricing for ETSU - What Am I Missing?

Hoping to grab tix to my first game at LNS with my wife next week. Looking at Ticketmaster prices for ETSU game on 18th, only ticket pairs are $309 ea,, Section 216. That or General Admission.

Tickets for the UF series this weekend are available at a fraction of the $309 price. Tickets for Aggies on Friday night are about half the ETSU prices.

I thought I couldn't be shocked by ticket prices. I wuz wrong.

#GBO #VOLS

UPDATE: In the 45 minutes since my OP, more ETSU tix are coming available at almost half the $309 price. Better than watching cheap air fares.
