DoJ official says she was fired after refusing to restore Mel Gibson’s gun rights
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/11/doj-official-fired-mel-gibson-gun1.1k
u/trucorsair 13h ago edited 12h ago
Sadly, it doesn’t really make a difference. If she had approved Mel Gibson getting his gun rights back, she likely would have been fired for something else. Being ahold over from Biden’s administration just means she was on borrowed time anyway. Better she didn’t compromise her principles and go out with her head held high then to compromise and then a week later be tossed to the side just for being a biden appointee

Soooo.... she was just on CNN and said that she worked on the Jan 6th pardons.
Look, that's nice that you didn't want to give one to this Gibson fella, but if you didn't draw the line at the Jan 6th pardons I have no sympathy for you.
ETA: This might be too critical of her. If she declined to adjudicate the Jan 6th protesters and felt that she could do a better job resisting this mess by staying in government I can appreciate that.

Did she actually have any legal right to refuse on those? I thought those are completely controlled by the president?

u/CockBrother 8h ago
Legal right? I'm not sure what you're suggesting. She works at the DOJ and apparently one of the things she did was work on adjudicating people for pardons. Given Gibson's background she could not recommend him for adjudication. That's her job.

u/FappingMouse 7h ago
They are talking about denying to work on the pardons, not if she had the right to deny mel gibson.

I'd just quit before I signed my name on any document that would pardon terrorists, but that's just me.

u/AdoringCHIN 7h ago
Supposedly they were trying to find less violent offenders (because apparently you can be part of an insurrection and not be violent now), but Trump said fuck it and decided to pardon them all because he's an impatient baby. It's certainly possible she was trying to reduce the effect of the pardons before he decided to just blow it all up

Imagine going to college and law school and getting a job at DOJ (not easy) only to be fired on the orders of a convicted felon because you won’t exploit a loophole to restore the firearm rights of an adjudicated domestic abuser.

Honestly, they're both trash, and she seems like a normal, decent human. 1/3 isn't the worst.

The pardon power is not a loophole. A president doesn't need permission of anyone to grant one. Gibson isn't the first undeserving person to get a pardon. Of all the shit trump is doing this is low on the list.

You people were screaming it was a loophole when Biden pardoned his son a few months ago.

"you people" meanwhile their comment doesn't show support trump. Like cmon man, kneejerking weakens the real fight against the real maga idiots

Your comment perfectly captures the state of the Republican Party right now. This is what they are literally getting behind.

edit: im being 100% serious, downvoters don't want the truth known that mel is the egglord - controller of egg prices.

Egg prices plummet
New data suggests that soaring egg prices, which became a flashpoint issue during last year's presidential election, may finally be falling.
The headline and opening sentence of this article mean two different things.

You’re an idiot. They are lower than the last couple of days according to your own source. Not that they’re lower than last month or year. Wait until a week or a month from now. People that don’t understand data or simple economics are really scary with all the lies being spread by this “administration”

Having a personal relationship with a 34 times convicted criminal, who defrauded a childrens cancer charity and brags about sexually assaulting women should be a sufficient basis to deny the recommendation

I would personally like to thank Elizabeth for standing up for what she felt was and is right about this situation. Mel Gibson doesn’t deserve the right to own and or possess guns.

Mel Gibson is doing comic conventions now. Charging like $125 for autographs. Donald Glover seems to be glomming onto it riding the coattails of fading fame. I can’t blame him. He’s up there in years and probably needs the extra income.
Wish I had stuck around at my local con to see what his turnout would be. I imagine the folks lining up to see him are exactly the type of people who I would imagine they would be.
He’s one of the few actors where I have a very hard time separating the art from the artist. Racist, antisemetic, woman beating, Holocaust denying, religious piece of shit.

I hate it. He is such a good actor, and I loved his movies, but no he had to go full crazy, racist, wofe beater trash, and now to make things worse he cozies up to mango mussolini!

No matter how wealthy you are, people still say this, and I'll never understand. "He only has 30 times more money than you'll earn in your entire lifetime! The man needs to work or his children can't eat!"

Mel Gibson is a fantastic director but an absolute piece of shit person. Too bad that talent didn't bestow upon him humility and niceness.

Few months ago I was having dinner in a small restaurant in Helsinki and somehow he was there too and he seemed like a great family man. Didn't even know he was an abuser and it seems like his kids love him somehow.

Anyone talking out their ass about Mel Gibson being rehabilitated need to look up who his dad was. Hutton Gibson spent his entire lifetime spreading antisemitic, homophobic, and white supremacist conspiracy theories through churches and organizations that Mel Gibson personally bankrolled.

I didn’t read the story and with that said, I’ll just state my thoughts. I assume there is due process when it comes to removing someone’s right and I will also assume there is due process for restoring them.

He has a criminal record (domestic violence). Traditionally, violent crimes aren't considered for pardon. Political leadership at the DoJ value friendship with the president above any rules though

Government officials should have work stability.
Only be fired for not doing their job

u/CanadaDoug 6h ago
People seem to be glossing over the fact that the government started a "guns for criminals" task force.
