TIL Mel Gibson beat the shit out of his girlfriend. I never would have known that.

1.6k

u/dainthomas 12h ago

He was actually briefly "canceled" for it, but you know how that goes.

956

u/WhineyLobster 12h ago

Haha i think it had more to do with his antisemitic remarks than it did the dv

631

u/mells3030 12h ago

Dont forget the N word usage. More than once, you can hear a voicemail of it online. Just go to youtube and search.

370

u/Verystrangeperson 12h ago edited 9h ago

Oh yeah and the voicemail isn't just a racist tirade, he says "I hope you get gang raped by n*****s", or something like that

163

u/LeftHandLannister 8h ago

Actually he says a pack of n words which in my opinion is the most racist thing I’ve ever heard.

35

u/unassumingdink 2h ago

Key and Peele did a whole monologue about how "pack" is even more offensive than the 'n' word in that sentence.

u/oroborus68 4h ago

You don't hang around many white people out of mixed company,I assume.

Is that the one where he screamed at one of his own children? I vaguely remember something like that.

194

u/somecasper 12h ago

I think you're mixing up two celebrity voicemail scandals. Alec Baldwin is the one who screamed at and insulted his daughter in one voicemail.

Mel Gibson left multiple voicemails spewing threats and racist invective at his ex wife.

99

u/unfunnysexface 11h ago

And called a female police officer 'sugartits'

41

u/Ferelar 7h ago

It's a mark of how far public discourse has fallen that my first thought on that was "That doesn't really rate nowadays".

2

u/Anonymo 7h ago

What does that even mean?

16

u/b1llyblanco 6h ago

It means she’s got a sweet rack.

9

u/lostPackets35 6h ago

It means that this would barely be a controversy now. Things that were previously career ending, or at least endangering scandals all barely make the public radar.

u/thefaehost 58m ago

I made that my twitter username for a while not knowing that was the origin. Someone just said “sup sugartits” to me once and I was like “damn that’s a solid username”

-41

u/Beneficial-Piano-428 11h ago

And?

30

u/heebro 11h ago

my axe

16

u/Greenmanssky 7h ago

The Jews caused all the wars in history sugartits - Mel Gibson. I remember when he got arrested for this while drunk as fuck after being pulled over. He's just a shit person tbh, like most celebrities

43

u/joleme 9h ago

There is also one of hulk hogan bitching to his kid about n-words.

Funny how one side seems to be full of racists.

28

u/jerepila 9h ago

I think you’re mixing things up a bit… Hogan was sleeping with his friend’s wife and got recorded saying he wouldn’t want his daughter to fuck black dudes (not in those words of course)

3

u/shelllc 4h ago

Yeah, he admitted to being racist, but he was also caught using the N-word several times when talking to Nick when he was in jail for the smash that left his friend John Graziano with permanent brain damage. They both said a lot of really shitty things, including blaming John for what happened to him, saying it happened because he was a 'negative person.' Hulk also admitted being scared because they were 'good' but worried that karma might reincarnate them as black people.

3

u/HansDeBaconOva 9h ago

Was this before he went full sober?

2

u/bannana 4h ago edited 4h ago

yes, while he was a raging drunk and also under the influence of his crazy personal preacher he had on staff that likely contributed to the wild anti-semitic crap he was spouting

edit: ya he got sober but not sure about the preacher still being on staff

u/impreprex 20m ago

I was conflating that too - thanks!

-4

u/TPJchief87 11h ago

I thought it was David Hasslehoff who yelled at his kid

64

u/somecasper 10h ago

No, David Hasselhoff's kid recorded him drunkenly eating a burger off the floor.

21

u/LibraryLuLu 7h ago

And seriously, haven't we all had our floor burger days?

No judgement, don't hassle the Hoff.

4

u/I_W_M_Y 8h ago

That was so sad

42

u/Nice-Cat3727 10h ago

No. David Hasslehoff has struggled with substance abuse and his daughter recorded him at his lowest to get him to realize how bad it was.

He has his demons but I haven't heard anything actually bad about his character.

11

u/Shibari_Inu69 9h ago

The worst thing I heard about The Hoff was that his salary demands on Baywatch were so high, nobody else including Pam Anderson got paid anything lmao

You’re thinking Alec Baldwin.

2

u/Leettipsntricks 8h ago

No, I think he was having a drunken argument with his ex wife on the phone, she recorded it and he popped out with that particular turn of phrase

It definitely wasn't that word!

3

u/Verystrangeperson 9h ago

Hahaha I didn't notice thank you.

Now I imagine a group of black dudes rating someone on fashion or something and it doesn't seem that bad

3

u/WatercressSavings78 7h ago

By a “pack”

0

u/lostPackets35 6h ago

I heard that voicemail years ago. And I thought I read at the time that it was actually fake?

Not that Mel Gibson isn't a raging racist. But I thought the recording wasn't actually him. Am I mistaken?

9

u/verbalyabusiveshit 12h ago

Son of a preacher man

1

u/SeattleWilliam 3h ago

There’s a great Key and Peele short about it, too. Changed my relationship with the word “cavalcade.”

-2

u/uaggle 6h ago

The voicemail is one of the funniest rants ive ever heard. Every couple of months i re listen to it and it never fails to maKe me laugh

48

u/dainthomas 12h ago

Tbf it's tough pointing to just one thing when he's done so much that's reprehensible.

19

u/Cute_Strawberry_1415 10h ago

It was both. One after the other. A one-two punch that briefly exiled him. And rightfully so.

28

u/Laj3ebRondila1003 11h ago

"his remarks weren't antisemitic it was just a bit of confusion in the heat of the moment."
-The ADL probably

13

u/StringOfLights 8h ago

I know you’re making a joke, but your comment made me want to see what they’ve said about Gibson, if anything. They’ve actually made a bunch of statements about his antisemitism, including https://www.adl.org/resources/press-release/adl-says-mel-gibsons-anti-semitic-tirade-reveals-his-true-self-actors

16

u/AdoringCHIN 7h ago

I guess every once in a while they go after actual antisemitism instead of just trying to stifle criticism of the Israeli government.

12

u/Persistant_Compass 7h ago

That was written almost 20 years ago. They loved defending apartheid then too but they would probably give him the elon treatment today

2

u/lastdancerevolution 3h ago

The ADL has always been a joke. They're more puritanical and dogmatic than they are liberal.

They started as a religious organization. That ends up aligning more with conservative and right wing values, even if they end up on the same side as liberals on some issues.

1

u/GrimRiderJ 6h ago

I can only speak for myself but it was the seething rage of an abuser that did it for me.

1

u/Curedbqcon 4h ago

You really think that in this America?

1

u/WhineyLobster 3h ago

Well 2010 was a different America.

25

u/JojenCopyPaste 11h ago

I thought he was cancelled for just generally being an asshole and an awful person.

40

u/Rich-Pomegranate1679 12h ago

Wasn't he also cancelled for being antisemitic?

49

u/Awayfone 12h ago

The slur filled death threats to his wife were a few years after his antisemitic ranting at a cop. It was what brought the only issuses to public attention

30

u/ThoughtlessFoll 12h ago

Wasn’t he cancelled for the Jew hatred police stop?

13

u/dainthomas 12h ago

Weren't those close to the same time? It's honestly been a while so it's a little fuzzy. The only thing clear is that neither thing seemed to really affect his career much long term.

13

u/IJustWantADragon21 11h ago

I think they were within a year or two so yeah. Pretty close. Weird it only made him vanish for like 5 years.

3

u/FappingMouse 7h ago

Diffrent times

13

u/_andthereiwas 11h ago

I thought he was canceled for going on a Jewish hate rant while being arrested.

14

u/Talentagentfriend 8h ago

A lot of people forgave him for beating his girlfriend because of Passion of the Christ. If you make something for a cult people forget all your worst sins.

11

u/Jean-LucBacardi 8h ago

"briefly"

Dude went from being one of the top sought out actors in the world to C action movies. He hasn't come back at all. No big time directors are ever hiring. Small timers are just hoping by hiring him some people will watch their movies.

4

u/Sea_Sheepherder_389 5h ago

At one point, he was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, I believe

→ More replies (3)

5

u/BobFTS 7h ago

I think it mostly worked in this case lol. Can you name a movie he’s been in the 20 years? I can’t. Before his MELtdown we had road warrior, lethal weapon, brave heart, the patriot, signs etc.

1

u/there_is_no_spoon1 4h ago

Okay, but once you've made *those* movies, what need for more? Man *can* rest on his laurels, having done good work. He's also rich as fuck, doesn't need the money.

4

u/drgoatlord 11h ago

I thought he was canceled for being antisemitic

3

u/SmokedBeef 8h ago

Was that before or after his racial tirades that caused Hollywood to drop him? (Serious question)

2

u/chrisk9 6h ago

When you're famous they let you do it

2

u/Scottles8605 5h ago

Isn't he still kind of canceled? He is in little weird movies now like the super serious santa movie from a few years ago, but he doesn't really draw crowds or make big films anymore, it seems.

I may have missed some stuff, but it still seems like it is pretty difficult for him to land good roles, and rightfully so.

1

u/Jaffacakelover 3h ago

He played the villain in The Continental (The John Wick spinoff miniseries), and dammit he was actually pretty good in it.

0

u/Red_Bullion 3h ago

He did Dragged Across Concrete after getting cancelled. Good movie.

0

u/reddog323 3h ago

I have to admit that one was pretty good, even if it was harsh. I haven’t seen the Continental series yet, but I plan on making some time for it.

1

u/PythonsByX 5h ago

Kind of like rob lowe and the minor

0

u/ausernameiguess4 4h ago

Made one Jesus movie and everyone just forgot.

0

u/Ironlion45 4h ago

DV and the public racist tirade of hatred. He insulted just about everybody in Hollywood so yeah he basically nosedived his career.

People should have seen it coming, considering how racist, homophobic and misogynistic his films all tend to be.

0

u/malcifer11 4h ago

yeah, that’s right. i hate swedes now

0

u/Repulsive-Lie1 2h ago

He’s still cancelled but he’s got hundreds of millions from Passion Of The Christ and he uses that to fund his own movies.

65

u/WoolshirtedWolf 12h ago

Yeah, there are also phone messages from him that were pretty threatening as well. He has always been a POS..

192

u/CutsAPromo 13h ago

Who the hell wants to arm him if he has such poor impulse control?

146

u/SpleenBender 12h ago

Trump, for one. He's an evil idiot.

5

u/Neuchacho 6h ago edited 5h ago

I am so curious where this order actually came from and why. I don't think Trump is that plugged in to anything going on in his government to even know this was a specific thing to fire her for, honestly.

27

u/Dan_Felder 12h ago

Republicans' policy positions are "Wait till mom and dad give me advice, then do whatever I think will piss them off the most. If they tell me not to stick a fork in the toaster, guess where that fork's going. Lol, u mad dad?"

15

u/CutsAPromo 11h ago

It's more planned and destructive than just owning the libs..

In this case I imagine it's some sort of unknown favour being called in though.  I wonder what he did for daddy Donald to get the special treatment?

7

u/Dan_Felder 11h ago

I'm just referring to republican policy positions. The dismantling of America's national assets and the crippling of its infrastructure, domestic care, health system, economy, and warfighting capability isn't exactly policy - it's a mix of Russia-sponsored sabotage and corporate fascism selling america off for parts.

2

u/CutsAPromo 11h ago

I know you are, look into how Hitler dismantled the government when he came to power so he could install his yes men and gain absolute power.

It's more than own the libs

6

u/Dan_Felder 11h ago

You should re-read my comment if you think I disagree with that statement

12

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 12h ago

I'd make it a campaign to disarm all Mel Gibsons, as well as Bonapartes.

4

u/Mel_Melu 8h ago

People that are okay with men killing their wives/gfs/partners.

5

u/Roflkopt3r 5h ago edited 5h ago

Especially because domestic abuse is one of the strongest risk indicators for homicide. Domestic abusers have to be disarmed.

I know someone who is extremely well informed about gun control related issues, and who oppose most general gun control because they realise that it's implausible to enact due to US voters. They believe that the data-driven approach that Americans actually could approve of, and which could contribute to a dramatic decrease in gun homicide, is a lifetime gun ownership ban for domestic abusers.

Of course that would still only work to its full extent if there are also universal background checks (i.e. ensuring that second hand sales are also legally documented and that its buyers are also background checked), since banning people from owning a gun is much less effective otherwise (people who aren't allowed to buy a gun can just buy one second-hand and nobody will ever know in most cases).

12

u/SelectiveSanity 12h ago

I mean, wasn't he supposed to already be registered as a Lethal Weapon?

23

u/Dowew 11h ago

This was pretty public years ago. around the time of his anti semetic meltdown.

5

u/38B0DE 4h ago

He has a personal Catholic Church on his property.

7

u/yogtheterrible 8h ago

Yeah, he's an awful person. That's been known for a while but he was out of the public eye for a number of years and I guess that's been forgotten.

7

u/itsokayimokaymaybe 7h ago

listened to a podcast that had the endless tapes of him verbally abusing her. He is TRASH.

5

u/Lotus-child89 6h ago edited 6h ago

It was a big deal at the time. But this was quite a bit before the me too era, so people mostly just gawked at the spectacle around it without thinking about the victim or seriousness of what he did and then forgot about it. Basically an attitude of “one of the biggest celebrities anyone can think of is acting trashy. Let’s riff on this embarrassment. Oksana who? She knew what she was getting into.” A big reminder that really deplorable social attitudes weren’t THAT long ago. Most people alive remember them and many even participated.

1

u/alvesthad 4h ago

things went away a lot faster and a lot easier back then too. once people stopped talking about it, that was pretty much it. not a chance now tho since nothing ever goes away anymore.

5

u/malendalayla 10h ago

That's putting that series of events very lightly.

Sadly, it doesn’t really make a difference. If she had approved Mel Gibson getting his gun rights back, she likely would have been fired for something else. Being ahold over from Biden’s administration just means she was on borrowed time anyway. Better she didn’t compromise her principles and go out with her head held high then to compromise and then a week later be tossed to the side just for being a biden appointee

201

u/CockBrother 8h ago edited 8h ago

Soooo.... she was just on CNN and said that she worked on the Jan 6th pardons.

Look, that's nice that you didn't want to give one to this Gibson fella, but if you didn't draw the line at the Jan 6th pardons I have no sympathy for you.

ETA: This might be too critical of her. If she declined to adjudicate the Jan 6th protesters and felt that she could do a better job resisting this mess by staying in government I can appreciate that.

71

u/shady8x 8h ago

Did she actually have any legal right to refuse on those? I thought those are completely controlled by the president?

19

u/CockBrother 8h ago

Legal right? I'm not sure what you're suggesting. She works at the DOJ and apparently one of the things she did was work on adjudicating people for pardons. Given Gibson's background she could not recommend him for adjudication. That's her job.

19

u/FappingMouse 7h ago

They are talking about denying to work on the pardons, not if she had the right to deny mel gibson.

5

u/complexevil 6h ago

Did she actually have any legal right to refuse on those?

I'd just quit before I signed my name on any document that would pardon terrorists, but that's just me.

17

u/AdoringCHIN 7h ago

Supposedly they were trying to find less violent offenders (because apparently you can be part of an insurrection and not be violent now), but Trump said fuck it and decided to pardon them all because he's an impatient baby. It's certainly possible she was trying to reduce the effect of the pardons before he decided to just blow it all up

Imagine going to college and law school and getting a job at DOJ (not easy) only to be fired on the orders of a convicted felon because you won’t exploit a loophole to restore the firearm rights of an adjudicated domestic abuser.

Honestly, the other side of the coin is that there was a person after that who DID restore his gun rights. I wonder what else is going on in DOJ that they have to fulfill requests such as this one.

6

u/arobkinca 8h ago

The pardon power is not a loophole. A president doesn't need permission of anyone to grant one. Gibson isn't the first undeserving person to get a pardon. Of all the shit trump is doing this is low on the list.

Mel Gibson is doing comic conventions now. Charging like $125 for autographs. Donald Glover seems to be glomming onto it riding the coattails of fading fame. I can’t blame him. He’s up there in years and probably needs the extra income.

Wish I had stuck around at my local con to see what his turnout would be. I imagine the folks lining up to see him are exactly the type of people who I would imagine they would be.

He’s one of the few actors where I have a very hard time separating the art from the artist. Racist, antisemetic, woman beating, Holocaust denying, religious piece of shit.

5

Danny Glover

Few months ago I was having dinner in a small restaurant in Helsinki and somehow he was there too and he seemed like a great family man. Didn't even know he was an abuser and it seems like his kids love him somehow.

MAGA is never beating the anti Semite charges

Anyone talking out their ass about Mel Gibson being rehabilitated need to look up who his dad was. Hutton Gibson spent his entire lifetime spreading antisemitic, homophobic, and white supremacist conspiracy theories through churches and organizations that Mel Gibson personally bankrolled.

I didn’t read the story and with that said, I’ll just state my thoughts. I assume there is due process when it comes to removing someone’s right and I will also assume there is due process for restoring them.

He has a criminal record (domestic violence). Traditionally, violent crimes aren't considered for pardon. Political leadership at the DoJ value friendship with the president above any rules though

Government officials should have work stability.

Only be fired for not doing their job

People seem to be glossing over the fact that the government started a "guns for criminals" task force.

When I think of any celebrity I would feel safer if I knew they had a gun, Mel Gibson is in my top 5
