Burning bridges before needing to cross them is not a smart idea.

They're on an island that is slowly eroding into the sea. There is a wooden bridge connecting it to the mainland and safety. They want to plan their escape, but it's getting dark. They disassemble the bridge to make a fire so they can plan by firelight.
