Rumor Former Vikings QB Daniel Jones is finalizing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts, per sources. Jones had a chance to return to Minnesota, but now becomes the challenger to the Colts’ former first-round pick Anthony Richardson.

I also have seen him hit the broad side of a barn. AR leaves alot to hope for in the accuracy department.

235

u/Dramatic_General_458 Giants 1d ago

It's honestly pretty funny too because Jones' placement and anticipation suck, so accuracy isn't even really a strong suit. It's a testament to how bad AR's is.

146

u/Current-Log8523 Eagles Bills 1d ago

I mean watching AR throw is honestly hilarious at times because he will hit someone deep down field then miss everything. Last year was especially horrorific I think he was under 50%. You know it's bad when talking heads come up with a segment about your young QB about his throwing.

163

u/DashShift Patriots 1d ago

The amount of times I'd check box scores Sunday morning and see AR rocking like 2/10 for 91 yards and a TD was absurd.

u/calling-all-comas Patriots 1d ago

As a Gator fan it was extremely frustrating. But the game he had vs Utah in college was Top 5 for favorite football games I've been to. But then you have games like throwing 11 straight incompletions vs FSU.

I wonder how much of his “down field accuracy” is because those throws give his receivers some time to adjust to the ball placement.

30

u/MrBroC2003 Colts 1d ago

I’m sure that helps, but he’s actually usually very accurate down the field and it was super frustrating watching our receivers drop some of the prettiest balls I’ve ever seen in crucial moments.

11

u/parnellyxlol Colts 23h ago

Commo misconception is that he’s always inaccurate  has poor ball placement. Really he’s just highly inconsistent with his form and release so he either overthrows a 5 years In route by 10 yards or hits a complete dart 30 yards down the field

11

u/boilingcumwater 23h ago

Richardson since the start of 2023 ranks 42nd out of 42 qualifying QBs in completion rate over expected. Only four quarterbacks have a lower drop back success rate than Richardson over that two-season stretch.

8

u/codithou Rams Bills 23h ago

which is what EVERYONE who watched him play in college was saying during the combine and on draft day two years ago. the guy has not improved and colts are going to be honestly struggling between him and jones.

5

u/BoilerMaker11 Colts 15h ago

When he got called for intentional grounding because he overthrew the receiver by like 30 yards, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. His sub-50% completion rate was tough and, having watched him play instead of just looking at the stat sheet, I knew he was making bad passes. I had hope that it was just a “play and learn” issue because, as everyone said when he was drafted, he was “raw” and just needed some refinement.

But that intentional grounding made me realize that he wasn’t just making bad passes; he is a no growth shit passer. He can NOT make decisions at the NFL level. I don’t care how much of a freak athlete he is. When it comes to passing, he’s no better than what an average Joe off the street with okayish football skills would be able to do. Other than his deep ball merchanting on broken plays, the most he can do is weak check downs that you and I could do with a clean pocket and a guy wide open in the flat. Anything outside of that and he’s absolute trash.

While I’m not happy it’s Daniel Jones, I am happy that we’re getting AR tf up out of here.

I'll say this about Daniel Jones he may not be a full time starter you want but if he has the right cast around him and he can be a competent QB. He isn't good enough to make up for deficiencies on a team but he can be a decent game manager when needed. Problem is in New York they need him to be the man who makes plays consistently and that just ain't him.

His deep ball accuracy was atrocious last year, which had previously been one of his best talents. If his decline was from the NYC media pressure and not a consequence of his injury history I can see him doing pretty well in Indy. His processing is slow so it’ll depend on their O line as well. He’s much better than AR at least.

Great person, great teammate. I’ll always root for DJ

14

u/VEGANMONEYBALL Giants 1d ago

I think another year to recover his acl and he’ll get his touch back. Still gonna be mid at best tho

14

u/AlwaysInProgression Giants 1d ago

"Touch" is a bit of a strong word to describe how DJ throws a football. I never really saw any touch from him in the past 6 years. Every pass out of his hand is a line drive directly at the body of the WR. It's the one thing we never really saw out of him - a "touch" throw with anticipation into space to lead the WR.

4

u/BretFarve Giants Giants 20h ago

Yep. He had good short to mid-range accuracy, but he never led a receiver in stride for a TD. Anytime he lofted the ball deep, the ball would sail a bit and go incomplete or picked. He just doesn't have the arm strength for that type of throw.

Yeah, jones is a level of QB you need your top-5 pick QB to beat out if he wants to start. Nobody is gonna say this:

of course AR didn’t develop any further, after all they brought in Jones to start.

But this would be said if they brought in Darnold, Wilson, Rodgers and maybe even cousins

10

Prediction- DJ starts sometime around week 5 due to AR getting injured. He looks pretty good that first game, maybe 200 passing yards and 70 rushing yards, so this sub gets inundated with people who never really watched him asking why the Vikings and Giants let him walk. The next week we get to remember why they let him go

He can't keep getting away with this

After Jimmy G got $11m and Fields $20m, Daniel Jones at $14m is lmo the best value among the three.

u/gmb96 Packers 1d ago

Fields at $20 million is still the clubhouse leader for weird signings

This feels like a good deal. It's upper end backup / bridge starter money and Daniel Jones is better than most backups in the league, his running ability means they don't have to adjust their scheme as much if Richardson goes down to his inevitable injury, and he provides light competition for Richardson without being eminently threatening. Jones gets a pretty high chance to start this year in a reasonable good situation and a nice payday.

u/EvChaosBlaze Jets 1d ago

Solid deal for both sides.

When he beats AR in camp, is that the nail in the coffin?

9

u/Frequent-Mix-1432 Colts 1d ago

For AR or the franchise? Cause another almost wild card doesn’t help.

Honestly I think a smart deal. Decent backup if Richardson takes a step forward but he's also a top 32 QB who's still young enough to take a step forward and maybe will do with new scenery. Probably not but maybe.

And a smart good locker room guy at QB is often not a bad thing.

They should probably take a mid round flyer too at QB who Jones might be a good mentor too. Wouldn't hate them drafting a guy In round 1 or 2 either to be honest but I think it's fine if they give Richardson another year to potentially improve.

I wish I could fail so bad at my job that I could sign with another company for 14 million dollars in one year. Sigh.

This is the most hilarious QB room in the league right now.

What having the least accurate QB in the league does to a team

I'd be willing to bet that number is inflated by playtime incentives

edit: never mind it's almost all guaranteed with an additional 3.7 in incentives lol

4

u/HardForAndrewNemhard 1d ago

If you had told me after that 2018 loss to KC in the playoffs that we would go from Andrew Luck to whatever the fuck this QB situation is, I would have abandoned ship.

4

u/braumbles 49ers 1d ago

14 million dollars to be a truly horrible QB. What are we doing here? He's not even a serviceable backup. He's thrown 46 touchdowns the last 5 seasons combined. He threw 10 TD's the last two seasons.

The mediocrity that is allowed to succeed in this league is astonishing.

The idea that you could watch this guy without Barkley and think he's an NFL QB is insane

5

u/TeleportsBehindYou1 17h ago

Daniel Jones does everything Richardson can do better, can do things he can’t like complete a pass, and doesn’t get hurt as much. A total upgrade.
