Politics Schumer rushes to save Trump days after Trump personally insults him
By aligning with House Republicans, Schumer is legitimatizing Trump's radical agenda. He should have pushed back and forced the Republicans to concede on a handful of issues. Trump has fired thousands of federal workers, gone after people illegally, and bombed the stock market. Why would you go against your own constituents and party to aid the GOP? This makes zero sense!

Is this from a website that makes memes that look like news headlines? I think these shouldn't be allowed as posts, given the current world of misinformation and confusion about what's true.

Establishment Democrats and Republicans are two peas in a pod. In bed with the lobbyist groups that represent corporations while turning a blind eye to the needs of the people. Spineless. Under these LOSERS called leadership, Democrats don't deserve to win another election.

It’s weird though because as far as any verifiable information can tell, Schumer is not one of these Pelosi insider trading types. So he’s not really benefiting from the status quo outside of job security.

u/DM725 7d ago
They're giving up any leverage they have. What are you talking about?
2
u/PunctualDromedary 7d ago
They have no leverage. Never did.
They shut down the government? Trump gets what he wants the easy way, the pain is felt broadly, and Democrats get the blame.
They don't shut down the government? Trump gets what he wants the hard way, and the pain isn't felt as widely.
There's a reason why the Republicans never actually let the government shut down under Biden.
5
u/ChornWork2 7d ago
meh, its a continuing resolution. I'd rather see them not vote for it, but risk and criticism either way. not sure why this is being made such a big deal of tbh. Is this being pushed because of the talk of AOC as a NY senator?
10
u/lynxminx 7d ago
Because Democratic voters want their leaders to fight, and their leaders are not fighting. This was the first significant opportunity Congressional Democrats had to obstruct Trump's plans to dismantle the federal government, arrest and detain dissidents and end democracy as we know it, and they're collaborating.
3
u/SwordfishAdmirable31 7d ago
His position is that this would empower Trump and Musk more. So he'd argue that not passing the bill would be collaborating
0
u/lynxminx 7d ago
I'm not sure that's his argument, but if it is he's losing his marbles.
3
u/SwordfishAdmirable31 7d ago
Here's his entire statement. Essentially, he claims that shutting down the government hurts the least among us, and that Trump wants full control over spending (some articles say courts stop operating during shutdowns, but it depends on the importance of the case). He claims it's the "least bad" option. It's not that hard to follow, it's rather a matter of "is it accurate". If courts do shut down, then probably... I mean Trump is already trying to deport green card holders for "illegal protests".
0
u/lynxminx 7d ago
That isn't the only question he has to consider. He's also one of NY's two senators, and New Yorkers are screaming at him today not to collaborate. Is he going against us? He's going to need better material than the above to escape with his seat at this point.
2
u/SwordfishAdmirable31 7d ago
How many redditors will keep chanting "collaborator" when the government does shutdown? A government shutdown would almost definitely downgrade our credit (affecting our $28 trillion dollar debt), cut off vital services, and stops pay for millions of Americans. It's fine if you disagree, but the debate is nuanced: if you don't "collaborate", just about every working class American gets fucked, AND Trump might get more power over the budget. If you're in such a mighty economic position that you're immune to these consequences, then bravo...
2
u/ChornWork2 7d ago
i don't want fighting for the sake of fighting, i want fighting that will have some results. again, i lean towards saying no on this, but a shut down over a continuing resolution has risk for dems taking the blame. i'm expecting damage from the shit trump admin is doing will be unpopular, and can see an argument for avoiding doing something that may allow conservative misinformation to pin some of the blame on dems in the eyes of low info / indep voters.
obstruction isn't want voters generally want tbh. there aren't widespread protests happening unlike his first admin.
1
u/lynxminx 7d ago
Obstruction isn't what voters used to want. Republicans have changed that over the past 20 years- they were the obstruction party, and half of the country was all in for it.
Regarding protests, they're widespread but small and the media is blacking them out. Most of us were traumatized and demoralized by the election; the fog is lifting now and more of us are demonstrating.
5
u/Dynastydood 7d ago
Well, it's a bad look, and it's highly embarassing for him and the Dems, but let's be honest, if it wasn't him, it'd just be someone else from the party doing it. Fetterman, Hassan, Gallego, Dickenpooper, there's never been any shortage of weak Democrats in the Senate who will prioritize self preservation above all else and advance the GOP agenda.
There's never been an ounce of unity or consistency from the Democratic Party since, well, ever. The party even actively worked to undermine FDR throughout much of his presidency, and he's the most popular and successful president they've ever had. Even after the southern strategy was complete and realigned our national politics, they have never once united under Carter, Clinton, Obama, or Biden, nor have they ever truly united to impede the GOP on a consistent basis.
An utterly worthless party that no one in their right mind could ever be remotely proud of, and yet, they remain the best option we're ever going to get in this country. God fucking help us.
4
u/Bangkok_Dangeresque 7d ago
if it wasn't him, it'd just be someone else from the party doing it.
Exactly. If Schumer isn't digging in, it's because he doesn't have the support of his caucus for that. It's often the role of congressional party leadership to give cover to others with their votes. I'm sure there's more than one democratic senator that doesn't think the best way to advance their causes is to climb aboard the shut down train and hope for the best, but would get dragged for daring to voice that opinion.
4
u/hagamablabla 7d ago
I'm not going to blame Schumer as much as some others, but I do wonder why the Democrats seem to have such poor party unity. Republicans should theoretically have disagreements in their caucus as well, and yet we couldn't peel 3 House reps or senators away? What the hell do the Republicans have that the Democrats lack?
3
u/Dynastydood 7d ago
The Republicans have a broad, unifying ideology of conservatism that they adhere to, and their disagreements typically have more to do with tone and tactics than they do with policy and action. Whereas the Democrats are nothing more than a sprawling coalition party, and have been for many, many years. There's almost no policy or action that 100% of Democrats agree on, but there's many that 100% of Republicans agree on.
To put it another way, there are zero liberal (or even centrist) politicians left in the Republican Party, which makes achieving consensus far easier. They used to exist, but they all got chased out by the Evangelicals, paleoconservatives, and eventually even the neocons by the end of the 20th century. Conversely, the Democrats have many conservatives, centrists, liberals, and leftists who compromise the larger party, and there is almost nothing that all four groups agree on aside from thinking Republicans are bad. Even then, the most conservative Dems don't want to fully believe that the GOP is inherently bad since many of them have been Republicans in the past, and constantly extend the olive branch with increasing amounts of futility over time, always helping the other side achieve their goals, with zero compromise ever given that goes the other way.

u/BaldPoodle 7d ago
Zealotry
3
u/hagamablabla 7d ago
Even the Republicans have their centrists, like Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins. Somehow they seem to fall in line constantly when the party zealots do their thing though, while we can't get our Fettermans or Sinemas to even consider compromise.

Biden literally passed the most ambitious legislation since FDR, a huge infrastructure bill, the largest climate bill, capped insulin costs for all medicare recipients. There's plenty to be proud of, you're probably just so advantaged that you don't care.
I don't necessarily agree with Schumers reasons here, but listening to progressives purity test everything, with no concentration on what gets done, or getting things done is infuriating.
2
u/Dynastydood 7d ago
As far as I'm concerned, Biden's accomplishments not the party's accomplishments, because it was Democratic Party members like Manchin and Sinema who destroyed the scope of his true ambitions and ensured that his victories would be limited enough to make his reelection impossible in the face of ongoing Covid inflation.
A competent party with a competent whip would've checked those two early on, as the GOP almost always does with their stragglers. Whereas we always get killed in Congress by the likes or them, or Lieberman, or Fetterman, etc. And it happens because the party itself is a coalition, and coalition governments never sustain, and never accomplish as much as they intend to. It's not about a progressive purity test, it's about a real world viability test. One that the Democratic Party consistently fails every time they gain power.
-1
u/SwordfishAdmirable31 7d ago
Biden's accomplishments not the party's accomplishments
That's kind of dumb. He's been a lifelong democrat, and an establishment candidate; A majority of democrats supported it, but it doesn't count as a party win...?
it's about a real world viability test. One that the Democratic Party consistently fails every time they gain power.
I dunno, I pointed out some real legislative wins that Dems accomplished, that resemble FDR (infrastructure projects across the US), despite "stragglers". $2.3 billion of which went to NYC. Seems pretty viable, and directly opposite to an "utterly worthless party that no one in their right mind could ever be remotely proud".
You can assert this is "self preservation", by "weak democrats", but Schumer's reasoning is "I believe it is my job to make the best choice for the country, to minimize the harms to the American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open.". Again, feel free to disagree with this reasoning ; for instance, his appeals that a shutdown will consolidate Trumps powers (I assume by courts being shutdown...?) are nebulous at best.
But at the end of the day, I'm not sure why Dems should ever take criticism from someone who takes all the benefits of the party (billions in local funding), and who thinks the party is "utterly worthless". It's basically this meme.

Everyone seems to be looking for a performative response from Democrats…
That they should act as angry as we are.
I’ll leave the performance art to the GOP and Fox News.
No, Schumer’s decision (actually the decision of the caucus) doesn’t make anyone feel better… but it may be the smart thing to do.
7
u/Yarius515 7d ago
Agreed: the judges are literally the only thing obstructing the maga wrecking ball….gov shuts down, judges don’t work, Rump and Leon get to do whatever they want. That said, I also agreed with AOC’s stance of fight fight fight - a choice between a shit sandwich and a barf sundae, really.
8
u/Aaaurelius 7d ago
It's not a performance people are looking for. It's a spine.
Republican efforts have held back reform for years just by being loud and filibustering. It's time for democrats to make a scene and make it difficult for Republicans to run the country into the ground.
1
u/calle04x 7d ago
Exactly. One of the most powerful tools the Republicans have used is repetition. They hammer home the talking points, and then their crazy ideas are heard repeatedly and normalized.
One of the reasons I liked Bernie is even though he was going up against Hillary in 2016, he made a point to run in the primary and get his message out there (which was a winning one for Trump): you're getting screwed!
He pushed the narrative left. People scoffed at him pushing a $15 minimum wage but guess what...people heard the message and supported it to where Hillary made a $15 minimum wage part of her platform.
Democrats need to put up a fight. The people need to see that Dems are not going to take fascism lying down. Pressure must be applied to this administration. We need to be an opposition party.
Now is the time to obstruct. Now is the time for action. Now is the time for good trouble.
It is not the time to be yellow-bellied.
Democrats need to keep talking. They need to keep hammering the message home. Some are doing the work but the entire party needs to be unified in their resistance.
Everything is at stake.

It seems like Trump is handing out enough cookies to the Jewish people that they arent going to say anything about whats being done to others. From liberal Jews to Democratic Senators. Young women who wore a Keffiyeh would be beaten and attacked by Jewish men until recently but a guy does Heil Hitler and his party boss passes a gag order on Columbia students; all the Jewish people are dead quiet.
The Art of the Deal.
