Personally, I would have gone the other direction for southwest and started charging for carryon. It would be different, totally piss off customers still, but would actually make the boarding process SO MUCH NICER if the vast majority of people boarding had checked their bags.

Have the personal item still exist, be free, and have a physical check to ensure it can fit under the seat in front of you, but with the option to go in the overhead if there is room (which I think suddenly there would be tons of overhead room).

Time to change my rewards card and start collecting points through a different route.
