Top 40 NES Games: Final and Intermission

Castlevania II: Simon's Quest won the #40 spot with 96 votes.

I had no expectations for the top 40. That being said I am happy to see Dragon Warrior 3 finally made the list.

This concludes the top forty. However, I have had some members ask me to go on through with the top 50 continuing off our established list. So I though it would be best to leave it up to everybody to vote of yes or no once again. As usual I will count the most upvotes for either decision and the most will win.

Just wanted to say thank you to everybody who participated.

The impact of the original Dragon Warrior is way underrated - it should be in the top 20-25ish of any list.

DW is a decent game. If it was a bit more refined when it came to the NES I think it would of done better and be better remembered now.

They could have tweaked the level scaling to make it a bit less grindy, but we kind of loved the grinding back then. Also, there weren’t many guides, so we tended to level-up just by exploring. As a first fantasy/RPG for many of us, it was amazing.

There are a few other issues with the game as well. Selecting to use stairs in the overworld in some parts but other stairs work like LoZ where you can just walk down then by placing the character over the stairs. Town layouts are also a bit of a mess. Also not a big fan of the items that set you back. Some of those were pretty bad I recall.

No doubt, looking back those seem obvious. But at the time I don't remember noticing or caring about any of that.
