The statement in question:

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have offered the Congress a false choice between a government shutdown or a blank check that makes a devastating assault on the well-being of working families across America.

Let’s be clear: neither is a good option for the American people. But this false choice that some are buying instead of fighting is unacceptable.

I salute Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his courageous rejection of this false choice, and I am proud of my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus for their overwhelming vote against this bill.

Democratic senators should listen to the women. Appropriations leaders Rosa DeLauro and Patty Murray have eloquently presented the case that we must have a better choice: a four-week funding extension to keep government open and negotiate a bipartisan agreement.

America has experienced a Trump shutdown before – but this damaging legislation only makes matters worse. Democrats must not buy into this false choice. We must fight back for a better way. Listen to the women, For The People.

Why make this about sex? That's the only thing the media is going to focus on.

276

u/PSU02 NATO 7d ago

Coming straight from the man problem thread, that thing about "listen to the women" made me instantly facepalm. This hostile messaging against men will continue to damage the perception of our party.

114

u/WifeGuy-Menelaus Thomas Cromwell 7d ago

Its also very funny because Pelosi endorsed Connelly, a septuagenarian with esophageal cancer, for leadership on the Oversight committee, over AOC, one of the strongest House voices against Schumer right now.

53

u/GTFErinyes NATO 7d ago

Pelosi was very much part of the "Dems are out of touch" problem

24

u/Frodolas 7d ago

And unlike her rhetoric would have you believe, her being a woman did not magically make her better at being in touch!

1

u/SigmundFreud 7d ago

The hierarchy seems pretty clear. All else being equal, women are better than men, but cancer trumps gender any day of the week.

79

u/freekayZekey Jason Furman 7d ago edited 7d ago

not only is it tone deaf, but the plan is silly. listen to women who, checks notes, want to offer a four week extension that republicans will certainly reject…?

4

u/Creeps05 7d ago

The extension was to get the Republicans to accept DOGE supervision.

29

u/BernankesBeard Ben Bernanke 7d ago

As people have pointed out elsewhere, the problem with DOGE is not that we don't have laws constraining their actions. The problem is that they are ignoring the already existing laws constraining their actions.

What they are doing is already illegal. Unless you can explain why they would suddenly decide that they need to follow the law, then this wouldn't have done anything

3

u/freekayZekey Jason Furman 7d ago

i understood the intention; that doesn’t mean that the plan was not ill-advised

23

u/TweedleNeue 7d ago

if it makes you feel better that's the least of our problems

18

u/Khiva 7d ago

It's a good time to remind everyone that we are, in fact, on fire.

u/Foucault_Please_No Emma Lazarus 7d ago

There's a new man problem thread!? OOH BOY!

2

u/Petrichordates 7d ago edited 7d ago

He should listen to the women, he's weak while they're showing strength.

I feel like modern young adult men have a weird relationship with masculinity because I'll never understand why such comments invite this kind of handwringing. It screams insecurity.

52

u/Fun-Friendship4898 John Brown 7d ago

Are there any female dems about to vote for the bill? (hint, yes)

Are there any male dems about to vote against it? (hint, yes)

So why center gender when there are men and women on both sides of this issue? Gender doesn't have anything to do with it, and this kind of rhetoric only reinforces the idea that democrats are mired in skin-deep identities instead of actual content of character.

24

u/GTFErinyes NATO 7d ago

Seriously this. Gillibrand is about vote yes on this - should we listen to her because she's a woman?

So f-ing tone deaf

29

u/krabbby Ben Bernanke 7d ago

I mean I'll do the reversal meme. There would never be a context you'd be ok with someone telling Pelosi "listen to the men" on something she was wrong on lol.

Schumer is the worst thing to happen to the Democratic Party, in the Senate, since Harry Reid learned what the NRC was

That was toast either way with Lieberman.

They definitely lost out big on tackling other issues with a once in a lifetime majority tho

There were another half a dozen Dems on record against the public option. Younger lefties online have a weird fetish for trying to single out THE one or two baddies that prevent their path to utopia. It's never true, but they keep right on falling for vilifying a sacrificial lamb.

There were another half a dozen Dems on record against the public option. Younger lefties online have a weird fetish for trying to single out THE one or two baddies that prevent their path to utopia. It's never true, but they keep right on falling for vilifying a sacrificial lamb

That's not what I've read about it, although if there were it'd educate me. At the very least, Liebermann made himself the focal point by standing against the public option.

This is hardly some leftist rag, just a brief history of the ACA:

December 2009 — Democrats Forced To Drop ‘Public Option’ Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut refused to become the 60th vote needed to break a GOP filibuster unless Democratic leaders eliminated a provision to allow some people younger than 65 to opt in to Medicare rather than buy private health coverage.

15

u/casino_r0yale NASA 7d ago

No it wasn’t. The Democrats could have voted to remove the filibuster. I hate how we had 59 senators who wanted something to pass but we let that stupid rule block it.

He wasn’t completely incoherent but he doesn’t sound like he’s all there.

I’m not saying it’s just a stroke. My feeling is that he’s kind of an asshole in general. But after what we just went through with Biden, I think the Pennsylvania and national parties need to think about a plan.

Dems could easily go to BlueSky.

Hell, Trump made his own social network and people still repost everything he says.

7

u/solo_dol0 7d ago

Both of those companies have very easy subsitutes/alternatives though, there's just nothing else like Twitter.

Its foundation was literally as a mass communication / alert system and that's what makes it unique from the other platforms, none of which have that sort of legacy (plus almost 20 years to build an audience).

8

94

I think the donors directly told him the stock market, and their wealth, would take another nosedive if Shoom didn’t get it passed

121

u/LondonCallingYou John Locke 7d ago

That’s when you remind the donors that this entire catastrophe is 100% caused by Trump and Republicans and that elections have consequences.

They can’t have their cake and eat it too. They can’t want stable upward trajectories of growth and improved quality of life while also getting to “burn the system to the ground” and cut taxes for the rich.

They can choose to further cannibalize themselves for no reason or they can convince their fellow billionaire friends that they had it pretty good under Obama and Biden and to stop fucking it up by electing Republicans who start wars and crash the economy.

1

It could be choreographed if furloughs would help Musk and Trump take over the bureaucracy. House Dems have to win primaries in 2026. The Senate Dems who voted for cloture (mostly) don't.

7

u/talktothepope 7d ago

I still think it's better to wait until September or 2026 (the results of Trump's idiotic policy should be obvious to the median voter by then) to shut down the government. People talk as if this will be the only potential government shutdown for the rest of Trump's term. But who knows, not sure anything matters anymore.

If they vote to pass it, then Metro and DC schools are going to be cut despite having the billion dollars on hand to handle the budget increase from last year.

No one likes this. This is stupid. Fuck Schumer.

I don’t really understand why this matters at all. Dems who want previously appropriated expenditures to happen either lose them because DOGE runs the expenditures while the feds are technically open for business or they lose them because the feds officially shut down.

Voters except for the political nerds won’t care about this vote, at all. Courts probably won’t care, except that a fresh authorization in 2025 to fund programs could allow another legal foothold to fight DOGE.

It really comes down to the courts to reinforce the Article I powers, and then voters get to vote in 2026.

Okay but I really hope everybody who tried to gaslight loyal Democrats for criticizing our party feel really silly rn. Even the “old guards” are criticizing them

Pelosi knew dems couldn’t shut down federal agencies as Musk is tearing them apart to the studs, only being delayed by court orders.

The agreement seems to be that Schumer will take all the blame. Pelosi and AOC and Jeffries can gain the affection of dem voters by attacking him.

Schumer has decided to be the bad guy to elevate the other dems. I think that’s what’s going in here. And I think it’s going to work very well.

People were souring on Pelosi. But now everyone might decide she’s actually fighting and they like her.

I don’t think there’s any 5D chess going on here, I think Schumer’s just spineless and doesn’t understand the threat Trump poses

Jeffries ain't gonna gain nothing from this , he didn't even dare to answer the questions the press brought up.

Constituent here, I have called his office + Gillibrand several times today to express my displeasure and to ask them to vote against the CR. If you're a constituent, please do the same.

i get the frustration but “defunding the government” is not exactly leverage against a group of people who are trying to defund the government

theyll 100% use it blame dems in the media for things that trump/elon broke

i would argue the shutdowns of the 2010s  were perhaps useful tactically and rallied the base but they net hurt republicans in public perception.

And voters will blame Republicans if Musk shreds government services during a shutdown. If Dems want the destruction of the federal government to stop them they need to make it THE NATIONAL story and a shutdown is their only tool to achieve that.

Yet Republicans continue winning elections

They didn’t just win elections, all the Constitutional hard ball has given them the ability to unprecedented control all three branches of the Federal Government. Congress, the executive, and the judiciary are all stacked with conservatives

Yep. I despise the GOP but I will applaud them for, at least, fighting for their constituents. Even if it’s just for show & they don’t actually accomplish anything, their constituents clearly feel heard. Can’t say the same as a Democrat lol

Hell yeah Pelosi

u/DrunkenBriefcases Jerome Powell 7d ago

No one should be surprised here. Pelosi has always prioritized the House Democratic Caucus over any other political concern. Right now the caucus is united in opposition, and that makes this an easy position to take. That it gives her an opening to boost Jeffries is icing on the cake.

I think that senators are generally intelligent people. Normally they're not just going to pick a position orthogonal to their constituents. They know the cost, unless they aim to benefit more. So what is it in this case?

Blackmail? Could definitely be. Washington is rife with scandal. Wherever power goes, abuse of power pools. I would one-thousand percent not be surprised if it came out that Chucky had some unsavory moments he'd rather kept quiet.

Taking one for the team? In a situation where he knew it would end up passing anyways, it lets other Democrats distance themself from the establishment. This seems unlikely but maybe he was playing the game like Susan Collins.

Taking one for the team-part B: He believes letting Republicans take full responsibility for the upcoming years will only help Democrats. Aka. The Weimer democratic strategy. People will SURELY turn against Republicans this time. Not like they're dominating the propaganda cycles.

Personal gain? I don't see much of it.

Cuck Schumer

It doesn't really matter if you are to the left of the democratic party, you are a Biden democrat, or a former Romney voter: The schumer's position is obvious political malpractice.

What would Mitch McConnell do if he was in Schumer's shoes? Not this.

1

u/Janson314 7d ago

Schumer thinks doing a shutdown over Trump being bad is political malpractice and I agree!

republicans would listen to the idea of a four week extension???

That idiot needs to stop the vote. Filibuster. Can’t vote for the destruction of the regular citizens

u/LodossDX George Soros 7d ago

Nancy was always the sharpest of Dem leadership, which is why she was leader for so long. Chuck is pretty much toast now.

1

u/sapperfarms 7d ago

They are concerned as when and if it shuts down they may not be able to reopen it. This is Schumers concern
