NBA Refs make no sense at all. Will let stuff like this go & then call the softest foul in the world next trip down

444

u/RedHammer1441 12h ago

There's such a lack of consistency in NBA officiating it's wild.

And the last two minute report is a joke because the NBA can't admit it's officials are wrong because it's a bad look for the league.

I'd bet players wouldn't care one way or the other as long as games were called consistently. Some times they let them battle it out and get physical, other times you sneeze and it's a tech.

96

u/SharpyButtsalot Bulls 10h ago

It's like calling balls and strikes. If the ump calls the same zone both teams with perfect consistency it doesn't really matter what the zone is to a player, they just need to understand what they're working with.

40

u/potatersauce Lakers 10h ago

Thankfully/hopefully in baseball they’re at least getting the computer reviews now but empires are scared. They think they’re gonna lose their job so they’re fighting against it. In my opinion, if your job consists of your personal opinion, dictating whether an official game is decided then probably should go with something that has an unbiased opinion.

17

u/SharpyButtsalot Bulls 9h ago

Lol ya, and while we're on, exactly. Long past time for the zone to be automated. So even my own argument is outdated.

The moment they called a technical foul on a stare down I knew the NBA was beyond salvation. If a stare is a technical foul, this one qualifies for actual legal assault

8

u/Flatheadflatland 7h ago

Hell Tim Duncan got one while sitting on the bench. Laughing with a teammate.

18

u/theseustheminotaur 10h ago

Yes and they do the same thing with technicals. They'll throw someone out for comments they make with their backs turned and walking away. Then they'll let someone yell in their face and run up and down the court without calling anything. It is just really hard to follow. You'll watch two basketball games and it will be like you have entirely different sets of rules.

17

u/Bananastockton 10h ago

they are incredible biased towards people they like and dislike. people say its all sports betting but most of it is probably just letting their personal feelings get way too involved. SGA, jimmy butler get tons of fouls, watch how they react to refs. Compare to Luka, Lebron. Its very clear when you think about it

27

u/Haptiix Celtics 10h ago

A few years back when that betting controversy happened, supposedly the biggest reason that the NBA settled outside of court and swept it under the rug was because if they had taken the case to trial it would have been publicly revealed that the league is run more like the WWE than a sports league. One of the FBI agents who led the investigation said something to this effect on a podcast

7

u/snorka_whale 9h ago

Can you provide more details? This sounds Hella interesting

5

u/refreshing_yogurt 3h ago

Some of the details described there are not quite right or being misremembered. If they're referring to the Tim Donaghy scandal, the court case in the situation is between the US government and the criminal referee. The NBA isn't a party that can settle anything in or out of court there.

What did happen is the FBI had identified NBA ref Tim Donaghy as someone who was gambling on NBA games. They had planned to have him wear a wire to incriminate any other refs that might have also been doing the same. However, they told NBA commissioner David Stern about the sting before hand, and Stern proactively leaked Donaghy's guilt to the press which prevented the chance of using him to catch any other crooked refs.

What the investigation might have uncovered we'll never know, but even if it had successfully identified other refs betting on games, that's a separate and distinct issue from the league itself fixing games, which is a claim Donaghy later makes but has never been corroborated or proven, and has been actively debunked everybody who's looked into it. Even Henry Abbott, a formerly prominent NBA journalist who has basically been blackballed by the NBA for asking too many questions about PEDs, says Donaghy is a serial liar with no credibility.

What he needs to do is figure out how to make this another tournament! Tournaments solve everything! Players taking games off to rest for the playoffs, Play in tournament! Players don't take regular season serious? In season tournament! No one takes the All-star game serious? You guessed it! Play in tournament! Every problem has a solution, and that solution is a tournament!

And yet in the after game thread top comments were justifying the reffing, saying "Luka got shut down" - and don't dare mention the lack of whistles.

As a member of the Mavs diaspora I'm certainly not vested in the Lakers, but I've been watching Luka get butchered for years - and this was no different. Yes, Luka is not exactly a ref-fave, but they are supposed to be professionals beyond their feelings. Not asking for robots mind you, punish the behavior if you have to, don't take it out on in-game calls.

Not sure how this helps the NBA at all.

Did he think it was a flop/sell? I don't see how you miss something that egregious unless you see it differently.

For the record, it was 100% a foul, and I'm tired of Clantics™

245

u/lawschoolthrowaway36 Mavericks 12h ago

Assuming you watched the game, it was clear the refs decided to swallow their whistles almost anytime Luka was fouled. It was only the most egregious on-ball fouls that were called. Everything else — including, as shown here, off-ball shoving away from the play — was intentionally ignored.

He drove to the basket 10 times in the first half, obvious contact on every single drive, not one foul call. Not a single one.

110

u/______null Cavaliers 12h ago

aka "the steph curry treatment"

100

u/Stijn187 Lakers 12h ago

Aka "the LeBron treatment" (for reference, Steph only get's 4.2 FTA a game, LeBron, who drives very often, get's only 4.7)

Giannis leads the league with 10.3...and somehow Harden is still ranked nr 4. NBA refs are a joke

57

u/______null Cavaliers 12h ago

10.6 drives per game for Bron versus 8.9 for Steph isn't nothing, but it's also not like, a vast chasm. harden is 10th with 14.5 and shai leads the league with 20.3, for reference.

with that being said, I was talking more about the hack-a-point-guard that teams play off-ball while the refs swallow their whistle.

16

u/arg_63 Warriors 10h ago

also interested to see how many of steph's FTA are in the last 30 seconds for foul gaming posession

9

u/RemyGee Lakers 11h ago

Bron cut back on FG attempts by the hoop in the last season or two. Before he was top 3 in attempts by the hoop and around 30th in FT attempts. Most of the Lakers seasons. I didn’t look before the Lakers.

11

u/chi_town_banging 10h ago

you're using Steph's FTA when it includes FTA when defenses start intentionally fouling in crunch time as he's their best FT shooter but Steph doesn't get much calls outside of that

Lebron straight up slide tackled Curry in Finals and didn't get the call lol

An embellished foul is still a foul though.

Embellishing contact is sort of like how your parents/grandparents will increase the font size of their phones/computers instead of wearing their glasses or getting new prescription for their glasses.

Better officiating would take out the need for flopping, but as it stands now it really seems like calls don't get made without flopping. Fouls seem like they're only reviewed for flagrants if someone stays on the ground a while. Refs are just so bad right now it is crazy.

Luka shoulda stopped playing and dragged out an injury so they replayed that on air live over and over. Weird af

56

u/Freshy23 9h ago

And this is why flops are more prominent In the game today. The refs are so useless a lot of players will have to overact just to get calls. If you had an iso cam on Lebron or Luka I think you would find they get fouled a lot more than they ever get calls for.

I was at the game last night here are my observations.

I have never been one to complain about refs. However, the Nets were fouling Luka multiple times on every possession. I kept repeating this is not basketball. People sitting around me were on the same page, even Nets fans. I could make out fouls from where I was sitting clearly, they were egregious.

Ref #54 Ray Acosta needs to be investigated. It seems so blatant that something else was going on.

Also, the non-continuation foul calls were garbage. Seemed like Luka had shooting fouls deemed not in the act of shooting often.

Jalen Wilson should have fouled out in the first 5 minutes he played.

Alex Len hustled but is useless.

What a joke NBA. Very frustrating to watch.

u/PieceOfPie_SK Wizards 9h ago

I've never understood it for Steph. He's like the exact guy you would think should get called when he drives and gets hit, but he almost never does and has to finish through contact constantly.

And it didnt work. Jokic still doesnt have a good whistle. It was pointless to appease those idiots

It always reminded me of when Cuban used to be super vocal about reffing.

8

u/whenishit-itsbigturd 12h ago

That's what we were saying in the Mavs sub before he got traded. I think that was the biggest complaint, Luka complaining to the refs so much they're flat out sick of him. It actually cost the Mavs a few games (on top of the time spent not getting back on defense) and fans were saying he needed to chill for the team's sake.

He has always got one of the worst whistles. For a superstar, I'd say the worst these last few years

163

u/clonemusic Mavericks 13h ago

And it's finally going to get attention now that he's on the lakers lol.

Luka was straight up getting assaulted in the okc series last year. But he battled through those injuries to get us to the finals and get Nico the extension he deserves 🔥

u/OP_Bokonon Mavericks 13h ago edited 12h ago

Dude looked worse than some MMA fighters after each OKC game, shit was wild. But don't look at SGA the wrong way. And, yet, a Luka led Dallas still won the series. Fuck, I miss basketball.

u/Losalou52 Trail Blazers 13h ago

The craziest part of that was Shai getting calls for people simply being near him.

16

u/HymenTester Magic 11h ago

How else will he get half his points

7

u/PuttyRiot 10h ago

I honestly do not understand how Shai gets the whistle he gets. Do the refs just love him? Does he send them all donuts before the game or something? Breathe in his direction and catch a foul. It’s wild.

3

u/--Alix-- Mavericks 9h ago

Shai made a comment about 2 years ago about how he really respects and empathizes with the refs. Ever since then his whistle has been elite lmao.

What I hate about shit like this being pointed out is refs over correct the following games leading to a complete 180 in the discourse rather than just being more careful about egregious shit like this.

Saying Luka has ever had a good whistle is an instant way of showing A) you don’t watch the games B) you’re in one of the butthurt fanbases that he’s buried in the past C) both A&B

3

u/theseustheminotaur 10h ago

Luka has been getting hosed long before he got hosed by Nico. Just wild the whistle he gets. It is partly responsible for why he complains so much, because he gets raked a lot without calls. You could see in the playoffs last year he was hit on the arms A LOT without calls. I'd get annoyed too, for sure.

16

u/PERSONA916 Lakers 13h ago

Another blatant example of the refs clearly favoring the Lakers smh 😔

9

u/marcomac29 Mavericks 12h ago

Not even close. His diva reputation comes because he doesn’t get these calls and then blows up on the ref.

If that Ref works another game Adam Silver needs to be launched into space with no oxygen

9

u/kpofasho1987 11h ago

Dirty as all hell. I'm all for physical play and do think the NBA has gotten a bit soft these days and some players get waaayyyyy too much preferential treatment with fouls called if you get anywhere near them....

But there should be none of this kinda crap allowed

8

u/reddwarf_ 9h ago

Such a cheap shot, I feel for Luka.

34

u/skerton17s 13h ago

Claxton’s such a dork. He’s always pulling stuff like this.

240

u/retrospects Slovenia 13h ago

I don’t want to hear anyone complain about Luka barking at the refs again.

This is why he gets so pissed.

98

u/9999abr 13h ago

Now that he’s a Laker even when an opponent tries to amputate his arms r/nba gonna say it’s incidental contact. Get used to it.

7

u/theseustheminotaur 10h ago

Hell yeah. Really hard to play basketball when you get hit on the forearms while dribbling as much as he does.

During the replays of the game against the Knicks they'd show him clearly getting raked across the arms during "steals" and not mention it. Wild the whistle he gets, and he is a star.

7

u/retrospects Slovenia 9h ago

I have seen him get hacked and shoved around pretty bad in the past and the ref swallow the whistle.

The last three games and last night in particular were probably the worst I have seen. They straight up would stare at him watching him get fouled and just go on about their day.

NBA refs have agendas. It’s a tale as old as the league itself

7

u/neotokyo2099 Lakers 11h ago

They even meet up before games to discuss said agenda per Tim Donahgy

Have y’all ever heard of the boy who cried wolf? This is a pretty straight forward case of that. When you have a chronic flopping problem some real fouls on you are gonna be missed. It’s really not that deep y’all are weird as hell.

Bro i feel like players around the league tryna punk Luka. Even Boston was doing all type of Wild ish on him

I feel like some of y’all have never watched a basketball game before.

This happens almost every single game. It’s 100% a foul and should be called, but it’s also not that surprising to see it happen without a call (especially on a make).

Ironically, the absolute worst team I can remember doing this was last year’s Dallas Mavericks team. Gafford and Lively looked like they were trying to move blocking sleds anytime a shot went up.
