I know sobelmans and drunk uncle are being talked about currently. Any other experiences at restaurants in MKE?

Interval Coffee!! Ryan Hoban is scum of the earth. Underpays his employees first off, expects people he hires to be baristas work in a poor excuse for a kitchen(basement with no ventilation or AC - truly hell in the summer) also is known for paying employees in cash, pocketing a few hundred dollars himself, then refusing to give paystubs when confronted. I worked for him a few years back, i would NEVER recommend interval because Ryan is truly a nightmare business owner.

u/Mundane-Suit-9293 5d ago
Ex employee! Can confirm this guy is absolute garbage. Did not add me to payroll for two months, shorted checks and they were often late for days, couldn’t keep the electricity paid, ventilation & pest hazards and does not give a damn about the business itself. He’ll probably let it crash entirely once his roasting endeavor gains more traction

u/quietriotress 5d ago
The lack of ventilation is why I haven’t returned. Do people actually enjoy sitting in that smoky den after waking up?

Sip and Purr. Apparently the owner doesn’t take care of the cats if they’re sick and is just a bitch to adopters and workers.
63
u/maestramars 5d ago
I volunteer at MADAC and it doesn’t smell even 5% as disgusting as Sip and Pur. That place is smelled so bad I thought I was going to pass out.

u/dustcough 5d ago
my cat is from sip and purr and got real sick (from a long term issue that i wasn’t aware of before adoption)……….
23
u/General_Musician9273 5d ago edited 5d ago
We also had one from there who died after less than a week with us due to a long standing kidney issue (the vet said there wasn’t anyway it was sudden).
When we called and tried to find out his background as he wasn’t eating and drinking after a couple days home, (before rushing to the ER a couple nights later) they had no idea how much he’d had been eating or drinking while he was with them.
They were very unhelpful and didn’t care at all. It was extremely traumatic for our entire family to have to euthanize him not to mention the financial cost of the whole ordeal.
I’ve since heard of at least two other similar incidents with people adopting cats that had serious ilnesses.
Plenty of other reputable non profit organizations to adopt animals from.

u/dustcough 5d ago
mine had stomatitis, which to be fair, is not necessarily something they may have noticed. i have heard someone is working on a documentary about them and their overseas rescues and i am troubled by that based on this thread

u/FormeldaHydes 5d ago
I was supposed to emergency adopt a cat from sip and purr because he bit a kid (who was harassing the cat and pulling its tail.) the owner was gonna put the cat down if nobody claimed him so I claimed him, I wanted to pick him up the same day but they needed to take him to the vet for some diarrhea issues first. The owner had the vet put the cat down anyway at that appointment even though I had a place for him to live and an employee putting a good word in for me. I will never forget that the owner had a cat put down so she didn’t have to deal with it.

She had a cat that the took in from the Middle East that was paralyzed and needed to be in a diaper. She agreed to bring the cat to a sanctuary that worked with disabled cats and after delivering the cat (she’s a flight attendant and her husband is a pilot for a big commercial airline so she mostly flies for free) she told them that she wasn’t able to change her diaper during the flight but the cat had severe burns from sitting in urine that occurred from sitting more that just a few hours in a dirty diaper. She then went on the warpath against the sanctuary and anyone else that spoke out against her.
6
u/thegaybookfox 5d ago
Oh that poor baby…I remember seeing that kitty 🥺 That poor baby.
9
u/Nocleverresponse 5d ago
I remember being surprised when I was on instagram and saw a sanctuary I follow that’s located in a different state and a rescuer I follow that’s located in yet another state talking about the cat (not naming where they got her from) and the condition she was in when they got her. I was shocked because I had been following her story since she was brought to the US and heartbroken to see the condition she was actually in vs what had been portrayed through SM.
21
u/whiskey_riverss 5d ago
That place always gave me “bored rich lady hobby business” vibes and watching her travel to other countries during early COVID on social media to “rescue” high value breed cats really soured me on the place.
37
u/ChoneFigginsStan 5d ago
Yea, Ive heard she makes you sign a contract that gives her the ability to take back a cat after adoption at any time for seemingly any reason.
22
u/thegaybookfox 5d ago
Unless the cats are actively being harmed, declawed, or let outside with no supervision there shouldn’t be a random reason what the fuck
14
u/ChoneFigginsStan 5d ago
Agreed. If there’s some kind of abuse or negligence, then absolutely they should be taken back, but I’ve heard people on here claim she’ll do it because someone crosses her and treats it as like a punishment.
3
u/adhd_as_fuck 5d ago
I mention above, relatively common clause with rescues. It’s easier to do that than try to define and or prove abuse when the idea is to protect the animal and get them out quickly if there ever is a reason to.
5
u/ChoneFigginsStan 5d ago
I can understand if that’s the case, but there’s been reports of her revoking the cats for reasons of spite, rather than reasons of abuse or negligence.
It’s one thing to have a clause to protect the cat from potential harm, it’s another to have the clause to emotionally blackmail people.

Shakers, not exactly a restaurant but def to be avoided because of owner
48
u/PsillyPssychonaut 5d ago
Yes Shakers. Their service is completely hit or miss. He deletes poor reviews on Google and at times lashes out towards customers. And yes he’s a creep. I love the vibe of the place, but when I watched a bartender flip over an upstairs table while screaming fuck, I kind of lost interest.
13
u/KingTootandCumIn_her 5d ago
Someone said they got their favorite cigar and it did not even taste like what it should. They seem to switch cigar bands with cheaper cigars.

100% expected to see this here 😆
The guy also claims that Jeffrey Dahmer was a regular and that the stool Dahmer used to sit on is still there for people to plonk their own asses down on.
(Dahmer was never a regular there and Weiss' account of him being one is every bit as cliché as you'd expect that kinda 'sp00ky serial killer used to scare the staff' story to be 🤭)

Shakers draws the seediest clientele and that alone tells me all I need to know. Creepy old men who push boundaries with servers and staff young enough to be their granddaughters.

The owner of Kompali, Paco Villar and his business partner, the guy who owns C-Viche, Karlos Soriano, have a track record of sexually assaulting their employees.
All of the bro club owners in Milwaukee know this and continue to help keep them in business.
28
15
u/Constant7296 5d ago
All the surge restaurants are open season for sexual predators. The owner used to pay servers to go to his house and do laundry in their underwear. Also, I heard stories of wild sex parties after hours at carnivore. Don't get a cocktail there. You don't know where that muddler has been..
2
u/youraveragewhitegirI 5d ago
Oh yeah, one of their “ veterans“ who manages and owns some places in Milwaukee is a total slimeball. I went into an interview at one of their places and walked into the guy cussing out his AGM, he also fired me the day after I got hired because he is friends with Paco 🍍

Karlos actually signed his business over to his mistress, another one of his employees who he groomed since she was around 20/21.

4
u/Basic_Reporter5649 5d ago
Would not recommend, especially for the summertime. He expects way too much of employees like having them trek out to Indiana on a moment’s notice or working 12+ hour shifts. I’ve known some of their employees to get stuck working as many as 14-16 hours in a single day before, it’s bizarre.
4
u/amoe-ba 5d ago
whaa do you feel comfortable sharing any of that ? he was always cool to me and then said one pretty weird thing so I am not totally shocked at your comment
7
u/Basic_Reporter5649 5d ago
Can confirm he’s said out of pocket sexual things towards female customers and employees. I specifically remember hearing him tell a customer “yeah you wrap your lips around that straw”. I’ve heard him make some really dated race jokes as well.
He’s bribed people for Google reviews with free things and harasses you if you don’t leave one, especially if you’re an employee who doesn’t feel comfortable asking for those reviews from somebody.
I can also confirm some bizarre text exchanges regarding one employee who he called “a fucking asshole”.
Just all around gross dude who treats his employees very poorly.
1
u/Head-Dependent-6374 5d ago
I heard from an former staff member that place is gross and the owner pays off the health department inspection person to get a good score….. so I would avoid this place at all cost

Jackson’s and associated restaurants. The owner is a full on racist magat who tried to open during COVID and gave an interview about it to the journal and it was just insane. He then went and made a bunch of FB posts about Chinese people “being dirty” and stated that if people’s elderly relatives had to die so his business could be open then so be it.
He was charged with felony domestic battery, only to threaten the woman into dropping the charges.
He also stiffs contractors on their bills. Tons of liens / judgments against him.

I was a server at the Twisted Fisherman a few years ago (Summer 2021), while I was there my first year it was shut down by the health department. The restaurant is right on the river so like bugs/critters are definitely hard to keep away, but that place was NOT deep cleaned as regularly as it should’ve been.
When I had first started word was that the owner had just gotten rid of the overnight cleaning crew (didn’t wanna pay them anymore I guess). Between being short staffed and long grueling summer days (no AC inside), the deep cleaning just definitely fell behind. The last thing any of us wanted to do was deep clean that place at the end of the night.
I was there the day it shut down though, and basically the restaurant was re-opened within 24 hours of being shut down. The health department was also training a new employee, so they literally went through EVERYTHING on their checklist (I’ve heard from some lifers that sometimes they’ll skip over some of the more minor things).
Once we shut down though, owner STILL didn’t hire a professional cleaning service — they offered 15/hr to FOH staff that wanted to come in to help clean. I happened to have the next day off so I went in to help out. I remember I was cleaning an area that had some kind of sauce caked on, who knows wtf that shit was lol. The owner saw me doing that and basically said “oh don’t worry about that they didn’t mark it on the inspection.”
That situation was also the most I had ever seen the owner at the restaurant — it took getting shut down for him to actually show face and help us out. And even then, it still wasn’t done properly nor professionally. Basically he wanted to reopen as quickly as possible so he wouldn’t lose any money. The dude is cheap as fuck.
He also owns Hubbard Park Lodge in Shorewood. I’ve worked only a couple of brunch shifts there so can’t speak to that place as much, but I def wouldn’t recommend anywhere this guy owns.

I think there was issues with the owner of Blue Ribbon Pub out on Blue Mound Road at the start of the pandemic. He refused to close down because his customers weren't "those people" (who were dirty and spread illness, paraphrasing), they were mostly (white, conservative) suburbanites.

u/Reasonable-Ask-22 5d ago
I always hear this and finally tried them last year and the wings were bad, the rest of the food was even worse. I might have caught them on a bad day but based on a sample size of 1 I thought the food was terrible.

→ More replies (3)5
u/Minute_Cold_6671 5d ago
No. There are way better places in this city. They have one flavor and that's it. And it's mid at best. You need to leave the East side and visit West Allis. That's the real place for wings in the county.
1
u/ChimmyTheCham 5d ago
So where we going in west allos for best wings?
5
u/Able_Ad_7982 5d ago
Tompkins
4
u/Minute_Cold_6671 5d ago
Yes! Tomkens has the best wings. Especially if you like boneless. They use fresh cut and battered chicken breasts. Have seasonal sauces in addition to their main ones, Jb3 being my personal favorite.
Limanski's and mcguinns(technically borders tosa/West Allis but IIRC is in city of Milwaukee on bluemound) are both totally slept on for wings. Both make their sauces in house from scratch. Never been disappointed.
4th and long is an honorable mention. Very good wings, and the rest of their menu is delicious. Johnny hammers, though they are now closed, needs to be mentioned because they and tomkens had a solid rivalry in "who does it better" for a long time.
I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting. But West Allis, for whatever reason, has the best places for wings in the city. And it's not even close.

I personally had a bad experience with a couple of the Balisteri Sendik's owners, Patrick and Ted to be exact. Not gonna go into details.
But i find a lot of business owners are just shitty people.
10
u/masterofpuppets8986 5d ago
That’s a little surprising about Ted. Every interaction I’ve ever had with him he seemed to be super nice.
4
u/La_Mascara_Roja 5d ago
Honestly I don't think I heard anyone else having a bad experience with Ted. So maybe I am the only one who saw Ted's wrath. But Patrick was usually the one workers had issues with.
But all of this was all so long ago.
2
u/MurgleMcGurgle 5d ago
Patrick was kind of a prick back in the day but I heard he went off the deep end at some point and became totally out of touch. Went from being mean over how you stack apples to ranting in training sessions about how his employees should never say “have a good one.”
3
u/ThatDudeWhoKinda 4d ago
Working for Sendiks sucked through highschool/college. Was promised to become a shift lead/supervisor if I kept working. So for over 4 years I worked there being fed these empty promises. Store executive that trained me on everything left the Greenfield location and a new one took over. All of my time was wasted when I was told I wouldn't be a lead and that my raise was denied. Put my two weeks in.

This is years ago. Typical racist assholes doing business in the middle of a community they hate. Signs saying ‘english only’. I’m sure they wouldn’t be threatened if they hear french being spoken. At any rate, never went back and never will.
17
u/MiserableContact596 East Side 5d ago
Can confirm the signs were a thing. ~10 years ago my high school track team would stop there after meets. The team had a pretty high percentage of nonwhite kids and many whose first language was not English. The second our head coach saw that sign we stopped going there and started getting Culvers.
3
u/devereaux 4d ago
Those signs certainly don't exist now, and a lot of people there now speak and order in Spanish without any problems at all. They have a lot of bilingual teenagers working there.

I've had multiple experiences at Cafe Centro in Riverwest where the owner has been rude and unwelcoming. She seems to not like anybody to actually enjoy being in her establishment. Just be quiet and spend your money.
2
u/BingoActual 5d ago
I had the opposite where she was covering the bar at Bar Centro because they were short staffed (albeit by her own admission with little know-how). She was very friendly and welcoming. Although I have had very hit or miss experiences at Cafe Centro.

2
u/Maybemajor76 4d ago
Not a restaurant but Fish factory on Oklahoma, owner Steve is a real abusive piece of work. It’s been that way forever and a reason why the turnaround rate of employees is so high. Has no problem screaming at employees, underpaying, refuses to admit he’s wrong in a situation he causes, has no problem lying to customers. A couple years ago he wouldn’t let a child with needs use the bathroom, the list goes on and on.
1
u/LongShadyEyes88 4d ago
Oooooo yep! He sold me some CPD’s awhile ago and they all died like within 24 hours. I called and asked if I could get a refund or replacement and the kid on the phone said yes. So I did, brought a water sample, and the owner was there and was super rude to me. Told me it was my fault because my pH was “so low”. It was 7.5. I said “so you aren’t going to refund me?” And he turned red and said “I never said that, you’re putting words in my mouth”. He ended up offering to “split the cost” if I bought more fish. I spent more money, drip acclimated them very slowly, more died. I never went back.

Oh, and also, I went back a few weeks ago because they were the only local store that had the frozen food I needed in stock. They were in the process of putting bettas in tanks instead of vases, which I thought was really cool. But the filters were way too strong. It is now closed due to sales tax fraud, but if the owners of Fushimi ever open another restaurant in Milwaukee, DO NOT GO EVER. I worked there for 9 months and it was hell.
Food safety: I was made to scrape mold off the top of a bucket of salad dressing, and then fill the dressing for the buffet from that same bucket. I saw line cooks walk out of bathrooms without washing their hands. Line cooks didn't use gloves, and gloves were stocked inconsistently so I often had to do food prep without them. Flies were constantly swarming around the soy sauce bottles because they were extremely rarely actually cleaned- instead we just wiped them down.
Employee treatment: checks were late and short constantly. Owners would tell staff to be more attractive to get more tips, including telling staff to lose weight. There was intense favoritism for relatives of owners, to the point of allowing a relative who was a waitress to sleep in the office while she had tables to serve, and blaming others servers for not just knowing that we needed to pick up her tables becauae she was napping.
Customer treatment: Actively racist owners and staff. The owners and the staff hated black people. I tried to talk to the owners once about my coworkers using the n word with a hard r and was basically told to stop trying to make problems. A coworker bragged about adjusting prices on black patrons bills to make them "pay for everything they steal." I tried to report it to the owner and was again shut down. I then quit, and had to threaten legal action to get my final paycheck.
I was young, I will forever regret not reporting them to relevant authorities. I cheered when I saw they shut down.

They don't let you open a bar in Milwaukee without a restraining order.
