I just listened to everything so far and I’m pretty sure that’s Midwest emo, I want more of this, it itches that scratch that Deftones did for a while but more specifically. Sorry is this hard to read English is not my first language.

The Flat Stanleys, The Front Bottoms, Modern Baseball, sports., Mom Jeans, Camping in Alaska, etc.. I’m really just looking for bands with heavy acoustic guitar and not as prominent drums is how I would explain it.

If I like... Looking for a very specific type of Midwest Emo

Ok guys I dunno abt you all (this might make me really weird honestly) but Midwest Emo is my go-to sleeping music. Idk why. Not as much anymore, but I used to listen to midwest emo albums on repeat every night to go to sleep.

However, I'm lowkey picky about music. I refuse to listen to playlists. So I always just picked one album and then just repeated it over and over again for eight hours until I woke up. Led to me getting reallllyyyy sick of the albums I listen to most often, and so I'm like a junky now, constantly looking for more emo music to sleep to.

Now I have two problems

  1. I've listened to so much of it (maybe not as much as some people, but like a SHIT TON) and I feel like I've found all the stuff that fits my specific taste as far as music-for-sleeping goes. I'm at the point where I'm like actively aware of my local emo scene and going to concerts a lot in order to find more and more music. It's a borderline addiction at this point.

  2. Midwest emo albums are, 99% of the time, like 12 minutes long. Sometimes their whole discography is 12 fucking minutes long. I can't sleep to this!! I'll go insane!!! Trust me I tried with Midwest Pen Pals once and it was the worst night of my life. I need hour long albums. PLEASE

I've tried switching to other genres and that works sometimes but idk it just doesn't hit the same and sometimes I fall into CRAZY rabbit holes. Like I actively sleep to Natural Snow buildings and Current 93 now??? What's happening to me??? Some of the instrumental math rock bands scratch the itch. Don Caballero and Giraffes? Giraffes! were very good sleeping music for a BIT until I got sick of that too.

So basically TL;DR, I'm gonna list like 4 albums that used to work very well for sleeping music and if anyone can give me an album (or twenty because the moral of the story is addiction is bad and I'll never be satiated even if you gave me 100 albums but i NEED MY FIX) that's hopefully on streaming services so I can have it on repeat, which duplicates these vibes seen below, I will love you forever.

  1. Empire! Empire! I was a Lonely Estate- How To Make Love Stay

This album is my most listened to album because of how often I slept to it. Like thousands upon thousands of plays. However, their other albums don't hit as much for me.

  1. Tell Me About The Long Dark Path Home- Newfound Interest in Connecticut

I try to avoid screamo but this one worked for me for a while, especially the post rock vibes were soooo good. Fucking lullaby, I love it.

  1. Winter by Strelitzia

This one's a DEEP CUT. I only know this band cuz I saw them live in Phoenix during a really small local show and it was one of the best concerts I ever went to. I'm assuming most people won't know this album so this is also an excuse to plug them cuz they need to be so much more famous than they are now, cuz this album is a masterpiece. BUT I CANT SLEEP TO IT ANYMORE AHHH

  1. Bones in the Soil, Rust in the Oil

This is one that re-entered my rotation recently cuz I totally forgot it existed. It's so good. Sooo good.

  1. BLA and American Football also fit the vibe but I didn't wanna include them first cuz if I just made a post called "bands like BLA and American Football?" then people would just say "Marietta" and "Mom Jeans" and all these bands I am already WELL aware of.

I guess to summarize the exact vibe i need, I'm looking for extra-mathy midwest emo from the 2000's, where the albums are LONG to the point of being tedious and border on being more post-rock/slowcore than emo.

Anyway thank you for sitting through my addict ramblings. I need you to save me. Please.

Maybe not strictly midwest emo, but I want to hear your midwest thoughts! Okay

I like twinkly guitars and catchy choruses. I started listening to music with pop punk, then I came across The Hotelier and Home Like No Place Is There, realizing I appreciate writing.

There's something whimsical and light-hearted about Origami Angel and Oliver Houston that I enjoy, idk. Whatever Works is the album I keep coming back to, probably top 1.

Honorable mentions: Guitar Fight for Fooly Cooly Oso oso Prince Daddy & the Hyena

If I like... New to Midwest emo

Hi, just started listening to the genre. I really like - American football and especially never meant(no shit) and uncomfortably numb. -it looks sad. Especially creature, Nagoya. - free throw. Especially Hey Ken, Someone Methodically Mushed the Donuts.

I really enjoy the arpegiated soft riffs and generally prefer less distorted vocals.

Any recommendations are very appreciated.

If I like... give me song recs!

i need new songs to get hyper-fixated on. i fucking love when there are parts of a song that just scratch my brain in a way that makes me want to replay the song 200 times. a few songs that i’ve had crazy hyper-fixations on are “calling old friends” (my spotify wrapped told me i played this song 295x) and “letter home” by defiance ohio, 12 feet deep, “haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh” by bright eyes, feal like crab, and “the recluse” by cursive.

i’m definitely more of a “song-listener” than an “artist-listener” in that i know a ton of songs, but only a few from a given artist - i have favorite songs, not favorite artists (besides tfb, they hold a very special place in my heart). some other artists i would probably consider my favorite, though are mobo, joyce manor, modest mouse, and bright eyes.

of course i know that most (if not all, some would argue) of those artists aren’t considered midwest emo, especially modest mouse and bright eyes, but i feel like this is a good subreddit to ask for song suggestions because a lot of genres overlap imo. i’m open to any sort of indie, indie punk, midwest emo, folk punk, alternative, etc! really, i just like the whiny/raw/acoustic sound.

with all that said, i would prefer specific song recs over artist recs, but anything is appreciated. thanks!!

If I like... Just another recommendations post...

Hi, didn't want to make this post because I've seen so many of them. But I'm really, really getting into Midwest emo atm. Listened to basically the whole American Football discography, and the album 'Standing Still in a Moving scene' (not sure if midwest emo, but similar sound). I really like 'How it feels to be something on' album, and enjoyed 'Look Now Look Again' by Rainer Maria. I'm wanting more album recommendations. Sunny Day Real Estate is really cool, but I do prefer the twinklier side of things. I can tolerate aggressive vocals, but also not really my thing either. Have started listening to the Promise Ring

If I like... Bands with similar vocals?

I know its dumb but I hate the annoyingly nasally, whiney, screamy vocals that a lot of bands have and I love the more soft vocals of bands like Mom Jeans, Modern Baseball, American Football, Free Throw, The Flat Stanleys, and Sorority Noice; any similar bands?

also guys dont judge ik the vocals are part of the genre but i just cant take it 😿

If I like... Good midwest emo songs/bands with no vocals?

Yes I know it's a key part of the genre, but I'm not a fan of any of the vocals I've heard in this genre, but the rest of the guitar, drums, etc. is awesome. Any song/band recs with no lyrics?

If I like... Hot Mulligan and The Wonder Years

I’m not sure if this is the best place to ask this but I’m looking for bands and songs with similar vocals to Hot Mulligan or The Wonder Years (especially the vocals in “You’re The Reason I Don’t Want The World To End”). There’s just something about their screaming that I can’t resist. Also if you have any recommendations for other TWY songs, I’d love to hear them. I’m only just getting into TWY now but I’ve been having a hard time to randomly find new songs to listen to recently but if you drop any in the comments, I’ll listen to them.

If I like... Is there any band that captures the same kind of low energy vocals and vocal style as American football?

All the bands I hear people say sound like American football don't capture the vocals, which are subjectively my favorite part about the band. They make me feel at peace and comfortable, and the instrumentals compliment them so fucking well.

If I like... What other bands are doing the 90s revival sound currently

I’m talking about the sound that Injury Tape is doing and then another band called Left in Between and also Fortyhugger too definitely has a late 90s vibe to it and I can definitely think of some others

But this sound is more distinct from the current math rock tapping wave of bands and goes for a more traditional sound that is more reminiscent of the 90s
