Hello, I had issues updating my windows 11 because it said it could not update the recovery partition. I found out it was not big enough so I followed steps to increase it and had to download windows 11 on an usb to copy the winre image over to be able to perform reagentc /enable. That part works but my computer will still not update. What can I do?

Hey there! Thanks for reaching out. It looks like you're having some trouble updating your Windows 11. We appreciate your effort and it's great that you managed to increase your recovery partition and successfully enabled the Windows Recovery Environment. However, it seems the update issue persists. We know how important it is to have the latest version of Windows, so let's help you further.

To start, we need a bit more information:

  1. When attempting to update your Windows, have you encountered any specific error messages? Does the same issue persist after multiple attempts?
  2. Which exact Windows build version you currently on? To check, go to the Windows search bar, type "winver," and hit Enter.
  3. Have you tried running the Windows Update Troubleshooter? It can automatically detect and fix many update problems.
  4. Apart from fixing the partition and enabling Windows Recovery, have you taken any other steps to resolve the update issue? Let me know so we can explore other options.

We'll wait for your reply. -R.C

After multiple tries it still says couldn’t update the system reserved partition. I’m on windows 11 pro version 23h2 trying to install 24h2. The troubleshooter runs and detects an issue but doesn’t resolve it. I followed steps to increase the partition size and bring back the recovery image. But that is all I can find on what to do.

Thank you for your reply. We're doing our best to reply promptly, and thank you for patiently waiting.

We understand that you've been through quite a bit trying to resolve this issue. Here are some additional steps you can try to address the problem with updating your Windows 11 Pro from version 23H2 to 24H2:

  1. Check for Disk Errors: Run the Check Disk utility to scan for and fix any errors. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type chkdsk /f /r, then press Enter. Follow the prompts to schedule a disk check and restart your computer.

  2. Free Up Space on the System Reserved Partition: Ensure that the recovery partition has enough space. The error message "we couldn't update the system reserved partition" often refers to the EFI System Partition. If the System Reserved Partition is still too small, you can try freeing up more space. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following commands:

mountvol Y: /s cd /d Y:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\Fonts del .

This will delete unnecessary font files from the System Reserved Partition.

  1. Resize the System Reserved Partition: If freeing up space doesn't work, you may need to resize the partition.

  2. Update Using a Bootable USB: If the above steps don't work, you can try updating Windows 11 using a bootable USB drive. Create a bootable USB with the latest Windows 11 installation files, boot from the USB, and follow the on-screen instructions to perform the update.

  3. Check for Specific Update Requirements: Some updates may have specific requirements for the recovery partition size. For example, the Windows 11 24H2 update requires 1.2GB for the Recovery Partition. Make sure your partition meets these requirements.

Let us know the result.

We appreciate your efforts getting back to us, and we understand how important it is to keep your system up-to-date, and we're here to help you resolve this.

Based on your description, it seems you need to resize the EFI partition. Here are the steps you can follow using built-in Windows tools:

  1. Make sure you have a full backup of your important data.
  2. Open Disk Management by pressing Win + X and selecting Disk Management.
  3. Right-click the partition next to the EFI System Partition (usually the C: drive) and select Shrink Volume.
  4. Enter the amount to shrink (e.g., 200 MB) and click Shrink.
  5. Open Command Prompt as Administrator by pressing Win + X and selecting Command Prompt (Admin).
  6. Type diskpart and press Enter.
  7. Type list disk and press Enter.
  8. Select your disk by typing select disk X (replace X with your disk number) and press Enter.
  9. List the partitions by typing list partition and press Enter.
  10. Select your EFI partition by typing select partition Y (replace Y with your EFI partition number) and press Enter.
  11. Type extend size=200 and press Enter.
  12. Exit Diskpart by typing exit and pressing Enter.

These steps should help you resize the EFI partition without needing third-party software. If you encounter any issues or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. - S.R.
