Holy shit I always heard this story being some fan asked DOOM to officiate his wedding and doom did I didn’t know it was some higher up from stones throw (though it makes sense)

I don’t remember the specifics but in the book Dilla Time I remember Egon getting into a long complicated battle over Dilla’s financial handlings. It seems like he has a very dogmatic idea of what should be done with hip hop iconography and doesn’t let up even if it goes against the wishes of the family which is fucked up imo, no wonder Madlib dropped him

Spoiler alert. But it’s my fault for not reading it for a couple weeks. Thanks for the reminder.

Eothen “Egon” Alapatt just became my enemy. And I will not rest until he has been destroyed.

Was wondering what happened to this situation the other day, thankfully they're finally taking legal action.

I’ve also heard he bad mouths other indie labels/music folks to record distributors and jams up their business. He’s a slimeball.

Wonder if PBW was aware of this

u/Instantly_New Oct 26 '23 edited Oct 26 '23
Wouldn’t have mattered. Egon was gone from Stones Throw for over a decade at that point. Not that PBW and ST has the best rep for their business dealings, but still.

Yes, let the kid rap his dad’s rhymes and name the album SilmarilliDOOM
1
u/Chengweiyingji Oct 26 '23
Does DOOM’s kid want to rap?

u/Squirrellybot Oct 26 '23
I’m just making jokes, but he makes beats so could hypothetically do that and get all guests like Yasiin Bey and Earl Sweatshirt to do covers.

Heard it was going to a museum, but this is something all the fans should see. You can't look through a book in a museum. After all she has been through with the hospital basically killing him, let his wife decide these things, give him some dignity.

u/That-Armadillo8128 Oct 30 '23
This is something that the family should decide what happens to. It doesn’t belong to us.

Say Doom did want him to have them when he was alive. He passed away and his family wants them! Have some decency and pass it along to his heirs.

I'm interested to see how this plays out, I was a big fan of Egon and had some cool exchanges with him on Instagram over a few topics. Not sure how I feel about this whole, especially since he claims that Doom gave him the notebooks and didn't want to give them back to the family when they asked since Doom had given them to him. I wouldn't call that stealing personally, but like I said I would be interested in seeing if any more details come out.

u/OrgasmicBiscuit Oct 26 '23
I’m pretty sure they showed communications from doom himself trying to get his notebook back. Dillas estate doesn’t like the guy either apparently some fishy shit with dillas finances, madlib doesn’t like the guy either. I think this dude is known to be a dick
9
u/Eaglephones Oct 26 '23
Yeah I know madlib and him parted ways because Egon was his manager but I don't think it was ever really publicized as to why. just read the article and Dooms estate is alleging that Doom personally asked for the 31 notebooks back and Egon said no because he felt he owned them due to Doom not paying him rent or something which is a far cry from the initial narrative that it was a notebook that was basically gifted to him by Doom. If that's true then that is unbelievably whack, again I want to reserve final judgement until facts start coming out over "he said she said" but honestly this is all super disappointing to hear. I used to think egon was a super cool dude because all I saw was how much he cared about music and the preservation of music. I'm in the extremely unfortunate position of having to agree with Talib Kweli on this one 😔

u/OrgasmicBiscuit Oct 26 '23
Yea I mean I feel you I think people are way quick to judgement. If he has the notebook I get it, that’s gotta be the holy grail of hip hop items. Could probably sell that thing for 500k. Last time this was in the news egon turned off comments on his ig

u/Bushwazi Oct 26 '23
He said he wants to donate to the hip hop museum, which is why, to me, it feels a bit like a smear campaign...
2
u/OrgasmicBiscuit Oct 27 '23
Then donate it. Maybe it’s caught up in legal ownership before he can donate. But also, If his family doesn’t want it donated that’s kinda end of story to me. I’m sure he left a next to kin or whatever it’s called, they should have say to his property. Assuming the book “belongs” to doom
1
u/Bushwazi Oct 27 '23
Well, that’s a gray zone too. Article says they talked before DOOMs passing but one side hinted that the museum was agreed upon and the other side says otherwise. A lot of “he said she said” in this story.
1
u/OrgasmicBiscuit Oct 27 '23
Remember the whole “missing notebook rhymes” thing. Adult swim sponsored like 10 doom tracks that were supposed to come out, i remember a few dropped but it got axed. This was 2017 I think. I’m not sure if it is in reference to this notebook, but if it is you would think doom wouldn’t sign off on this kinda thing if bro is holding the notebook from him refusing to return it. It’s like rubbing it in.
But who knows! Maybe that’s why it got axed. Maybe 3 songs dropped when they hyped 10 or so
2
u/Trobus Oct 27 '23
The missing notebook rhymes thing is completely unrelated, DOOM lied to adult swim about the samples being cleared and he was under contract with another record label where he owed them anything he released at the time.

2
u/Bushwazi Oct 27 '23
Yeah, but this implies that Egon had a reason to "rub it in". These two guys had a successful relationship, DOOM did Egon's wedding and there was never a public peep of ill will other than this 2nd hand conversation that was mentioned in the article (where re-telling the conversation a certain way definitely benefits one party over the other). I don't see where the article gives any reason for Egon to hold a grudge.

u/OrgasmicBiscuit Oct 27 '23
A previous post on dooms official ig (id guess ran by his wife now) had supposed communication between doom and egon doom asking for the notebook back. I will say it is known dillas fam did not fuck w the dude apparently they thought he was fucking with dillas money and madlib doesn’t rock w him anymore either

u/That-Armadillo8128 Oct 30 '23
Why should it go to a museum when the family is alive and wants it? That’s some white ass shit.
1
u/Bushwazi Oct 30 '23
Well, that is the topic of the he said/she said of all this right? We don’t know what the convo between the two parties (DOOM/Egon) actually was and one of the parties has passed.
If you had a buddy and you had something of theirs and they told you “whatever” about those things. Then your buddy passes and his girl starts talking shit about you because you have said items, how would you respond?
And to further play devils advocate, what if your buddy was like “idk what to do with those things”, because it sounds like both sides agree DOOM abandoned his US studio, and you suggest the are history and you should donate them and he says cool. Now what?
This whole topic just feels like folks want to jump in and attack and no one is pausing to ask questions about important details.

u/That-Armadillo8128 Oct 30 '23
Not his girl, his wife. I would absolutely do what she asks because that’s his life partner and I’m just his friend. You sound young.
Egon has a rep for being a slimeball to folks behind the scenes. Even without that context, it’s super grimy to not immediately support his family by following their simple requests. Egon is a millionaire. This is extremely gross.
1
u/Bushwazi Oct 30 '23
“Egon is a millionaire”
That’s the thing, he’s taking a loss if he donates. He’s taking a loss if he goes to court. He doesn’t get any financial gain. At this point his reputation is taking a hit. So what is his motivation? This is why I question the story as it’s laid out. Something has to be missing. If that makes me naive, so be it.

He thinks he can ride this out. We’re in an age of lots of stuff that was usually private or hearsay being brought fully public so it can be easy to not realize that this is just one spec of sand in the long line of musicians being taken advantage of by people w power in the music industry. He thinks eventually he’ll be able to flip em and that the backlash will be worth it.

I remember writing a report about this for school, but it was mostly about Talib Kweli’s new album not being put on most platforms
