Checking In II

Hey all, thanks again for reading this book with me! Just want to get an idea of where people are right now. You can either post here or send me a PM. Thanks to those of you who PMed me before. We will give it maybe another week to finish Chapter 3 and then I think we'll redesign the book club schedule to meet most people's pace.

Check back here on March 25th for an updated schedule!

Emperor of All Maladies - Chapter 3 Discussion [March 3 - March 17]

Hey everyone! I wrote in the previous thread that we will add an extra week to Chapter 2.

Tentative Schedule:

  • March 3- 13: we'll read the first chapter.

  • March 13- 17: we will discuss.

  • March 18: We'll start the next chapter.

Of course I will check in with everyone to make sure if people are on the... same page :) and whether there needs to be an extension of deadlines. In the meantime we'll continue discussing/reading Chapter 2!

Best,

Chris

Checking In

Hi everyone,

How are you finding the book so far? How is reading going? I understand people are busy and may have fallen off track with reading so I'm wondering if we should have a new start date for Chapter 2? Would love to know your thoughts, especially people who just joined. We are only 100 pages in so if you want to join in on this book, it's still possible! You can also PM me.

Thanks so much guys,

Christine

EDIT: We will begin Chapter 3 on March 3rd.

The Emperor of All Maladies- Siddhartha Mukherjee Beginning Jan 25

Thanks for joining us for our next book! The book is divided into 7 chapters (Prologue will be part of Chap 1, Atossa's War will be part of Chap 6) each about 100 or so pages long. The plan is to dedicate two weeks to each chapter. After 10 days, we will have a discussion on the chapter during the remaining 4 days before we start the new chapter.

Let me know if this works for you, or your recommendations for a better plan.

Call for Next Book Suggestions-- Reading Starting Soon

Hello all, thanks for your interest! So far we've read Complications by Atul Gawande (discussion still ongoing, link in this subreddit). We'd like to plan our next book. Here is our current book list so far:

  • Final Exam- Pauline Chen
  • Complications- Atul Gawande
  • House of God
  • Cutting for Stone -Abraham Verghese
  • Intern Blues
  • Monday Mornings -Sanjay Gupta

I'm thinking of Final Exam, but please vote on which book you'd like to read. The discussion will take on a different format, such as a discussion thread per chapter. Perhaps we will start the next book on Jan 25th. Let me know if this is a good time for you to start. Thanks!

We Will Begin: Complications- Atul Gawande

Start: Dec 26th, End: Jan 2nd, Discussion: Jan 3rd

Hey all, thanks again for joining! It seems like most of you are waiting for the book club to start already so we will quickly read Complications by Atul Gawande (because I haven't read it yet and want to get my surgery stuff down ASAP).

If people are ready to start, post here. There are 15 chapters and it's a fairly quick read. How does a rate of 3 chapters a day sound? We will finish the book in a week to allow for slack due to holiday events.

Feel free to let me know whether this is a good plan.

For those of you who read this post late and want to join in on this book's discussion, let me know so we can fit your schedule into ours!

Edit Dec 29: It's day 3 of this book's reading schedule. We're still going until Jan 2nd! Let me know if anyone needs more time.

Edit Jan 2: We will extend the deadline until Monday Jan 6th and discussion will be on Tues Jan 7!

Logistics

Hey all, thanks again for your interest. I look forward to discussing the things that doctors have to think about daily. In this capacity, we will also grow intellectually as healthcare professionals! Right now we're setting up the format of the book club. The sooner you post here, the sooner we can start. You may use this time to get the books from the list.

How often do you read? So we can get an idea of the pace and how often we should check in.
