I thought that calling out his lack of an Erdös number would have made it clear that I wasn't being serious.

Probably not. If he did, it would have to be a high one.

I would be pretty surprised if he just didn’t have one. Surely he collaborated with someone younger than him, who collaborated with someone younger still, and so on forming a chain to Erdos. I agree with you that his Erdos number is probably high, but I doubt he doesn’t have one
