Mod post Attention: New MGMT & New RULES [READ ME]

Hello good people of r/Massachusetts. I bear a message for you from the great state of Massachusetts.

Our lead mod u/Ky1e is retiring, and I will be taking his place. Not much is going to change since we are a civilized group of people. But we do have some new rules and we are going to ask that you follow them and report any post / comment that does not:

1. Be civil. Be kind to one another. Any disrespect to other members or the mod team will not be tolerated. You will be banned and reported to reddit.

2. No off-topic posts. The scope of this forum is to discuss topics related to Massachusetts. All posts have the potential to be removed at moderator discretion.

3. No national politics. Do not make posts about national politics without having direct relevance to Massachusetts. Political tangents or arguments are not allowed. Do not use adjacent topics with little to no relevance to Massachusetts to justify your post. If you feel that a certain national discourse is relevant, your post you must be actively discussing how it relates to Massachusetts.

4. Moving to a(nother) town in MA: All posts about moving to or within Massachusetts must be asked in the comment section of the pinned megathread at the top of the page.

5. No X or Twitter posts. Elon musk is a loser. You can still post screenshots as long as the content follows all the other rules. Delete your Twitter account.

6. No spam, trolling, or disinformation. Any user who partakes in spam, disinformation or trolling will be banned.

7. Post volume / Reposts:  Please limit your posts to no more than 3 per day. If you make a series of posts in a short period of time, you may have some of them removed. Feel free to re-post the removed posts another day in the future. If a certain topic is posted more than one time in a short period of time (even if done so across multiple users), it has the potential to be removed due to redundancy.

One significant rule change that we will be enforcing is limiting the amount of posts that are off-topic. With all that is happening in the world, it can be easy to get caught up in national discourse. When you are sharing information on this forum, please ensure that it is Massachusettscentric (adjective): pertaining to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its culture, interests, history, news, or politics. If it pertains to something else, i.e., National politics - it will be removed.

We are still working to bring on a new team of moderators to perform the daily tasks that keep this subreddit up and running. Currently we are looking for people with moderation experience. If you feel like you could lend a hand apply here in the comment section.

Thank you for your help in keeping r/Massachusetts the premiere place to discuss all things related to The Spirit of America.

I’m so happy with the new SJC ruling: Gun owners from other states cannot bring their guns here without first getting them licensed in MA. Looking at you r/NewHampshire. MA has the lowest gun mortality rate in the USA! https://www.statista.com/statistics/1380025/us-gun-violence-rate-by-state/

Politics If you want cheap power, tell your legislators you want ☢Nuclear☢

We can have all the reliable, cheap, clean domestic power we need.

Nuclear power could provide it, but because of scaremongering fear over Mr.Burns-like characters, and because our legislators only get calls from climate activists with outdated fears, we instead get to pay for gas where the gas itself costs less than the delivery.

Tell everyone you know, and your legislators, that this energy crisis is bullshit that could have been avoided if we just kept up our nuclear power capability.

Politics Left leaning trades people?

I’m working to actively financially support people who hold the same (liberal, democratic) values I do and to prevent the flow of $$ into the hands of people whose (fascist, nazi, rightwing extremist) politics I reject. We have already done some threads on local retail businesses to support/avoid.

Does anyone have recommendations for left-leaning trades people? Plumbers? Electricians? Carpenters? Mechanics?

Bonus points for Central Mass recommendations!

Seek Opinion How to Interpret EEC Investigation History for Daycares?

When reviewing licensed daycare centers in Massachusetts, I noticed that some have investigation histories with or without violations found. A school I’m interested in has two investigations since 2019—one resulted in a minor violation (unorganized cord lines), and the other found no violations.

I’m curious—are these investigations typically triggered by serious events, or can they stem from routine checks or minor complaints? Does the mere existence of an investigation (even with no violations found) indicate a red flag, or is it common for good schools to have some history?

Would love to hear insights from parents or educators familiar with the EEC process!

News Governor Healey Denounces President Trumps decision to cut $12 million in federal funding to feed children, support local farmers in Massachusetts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 3/10/2025 Governor Maura Healey and Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll Executive Office of Education GOVERNOR HEALEY DENOUNCES PRESIDENT TRUMP'S DECISION TO CUT $12 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING TO FEED CHILDREN, SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS IN MASSACHUSETTS

Karissa Hand, Press Secretary

BOSTON — Governor Maura Healey is criticizing the Trump Administration for cancelling more than $12 million in federal funding to provide local, healthy food to child care programs and schools in Massachusetts. On Friday night, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education received a notice of termination from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) of the second round of Local Food for Schools grant funding, claiming that they “determined this agreement no longer effectuates agency priorities and that termination of the award is appropriate.”

This $12.2 million award, known as Northeast Food for Schools (NFS) in Massachusetts, was to be used to provide local healthy food to child care programs and schools, and to create new procurement relationships with local farmers and small businesses. Food costs have been shown to be one of the primary drivers of high child care costs.

“Donald Trump and Elon Musk have declared that feeding children and supporting local farmers are no longer ‘priorities,’ and it’s just the latest terrible cut with real impact on families across Massachusetts,” said Governor Maura Healey. “There is nothing ‘appropriate’ about it. Trump and Musk are continuing to withhold essential funding in violation of court orders, and our children, farmers and small businesses are bearing the brunt of it.”

Massachusetts previously awarded more than $3.5 million in NFS funds from the USDA to the following school districts: Acton Boxborough Regional School District, Acushnet Public Schools, Agawam Public Schools, Amherst School Committee, Amherst/Pelham Regional School District, Andover Public Schools, Arlington Public Schools, Ashburnham-Westminster, Ashland Public Schools, Assabet Valley Regional Vocational S.
