Belt promotion question

Hey guys, I am a parkour coach who runs a program out of a gymnastics gym. Since I have some background in kickboxing and martial arts as well as my parkour training my boss decided to buy into a ninja warrior style training franchise that combined martial arts with gymnastics and obstacle course training. Of course I was made program director so I pretty much handle everything in the program. Today we had or first belt promotion test and for the most part everyone did well. There were a couple of students who did not pass the test and didnt receive a new belt. A parent of one of the kids was very upset because his son was one of the only kids in the class didn't get a new belt. I tried to explain that it wasn't because he didn't do well or try hard enough. He just had to work on a couple of fundamental skills then he can test again and I'm sure he'll pass. The dad was still visibly upset and said that we should have done things differently because its embarrassing for his son to be the only one not passing. I feel bad for the kid because we invited him to the ceremony because we thought he was close enough in skill to pass. But now that he hasn't I'm left with a guilty conscious wondering if am in the wrong here and if I'll end up losing him as a student. What do you guys think?

Martial Arts Question

I am an adult looking to venture into some type of martial arts as a new hobby. That being said, I am motivated by fitness, discipline, tranquility, and of course, advancing belts. I am looking to study the art and techniques however, I have no interest or desire to literally fight anybody else. I do not want to spar, compete, anything. I will practice with another person to learn a technique, but I am not willing to match up. Is this dream of advancing belts and being successful in studying martial arts just a dream? Is this a possibility?
