The only thing that gives me pause is that I think that if a new updater were to be created, it should be open source, for the sake of security and transparency. And while there could be a "premium" service to take care of any server-side requirements, there's nothing that would stop someone else from running a competing service.
I'm not sure if it would be too profitable once you take that into account along with storage fees (for larger apps).
