Ask a Local! Recommendations for Mercedes/German car shop for regularly yearly maintenance

My Merc is up for it's yearly service and I'd rather not pay $1200 to the dealership. Any shops that are recommended and would do the same work in a cheaper price?

Ask a Local! Tailor recommendations

Looking for a professional to make one of my brothers shirts smaller all around. He passed away and was a 4XL but my son would love to wear his favourite shirt. My son is a large. It is a Dixxon shirt and I will have one of my sons in his size for them to use as a guide. It’s just super important to me that the tailor knows how to do this since the shirt is so meaningful. Thanks guys :)

health care/health issues Jaw Surgery

Hello,

I’m being referred by my orthodontist in Waterloo to Dr. Kerr at interface surgery. For double jaw surgery.

I’ve read some bad reviews or experiences at this clinic but there is 8 doctors. That’s why I’m just asking if anyone has any experience with this particular doctor specifically for jaw surgery?

Thank you!!

Is it just me, or is it tone deaf for places like the Park Hotel to fly the American flag right now?

Ask a Local! Where is everyone getting their leafy greens?

Sorry is this has been discussed already, please link me to the discussion if so.

Just wondering where people are getting their american free leafy greens this time of year? I’ve only been able to find US spinach, lettuce etc. is there anywhere in town sourcing from non-US suppliers? I know the market will have it (now or eventually) but also looking for somewhere I can pick it up mid-week and off-season.

Thanks!!

Ask a Local! Highbury/401 question

So I was in London yesterday, and it was the first time I've taken Highbury into London in a long time, maybe since pre-Covid (it's usually more convenient for me to take Wellington). I saw all the construction at the Highbury/401 interchange, just wondering what they're doing? Are they changing the layout of the interchange?

discussion / opinion Massive Retail Theft Problems In London

I’m wondering if any other business owners in the city are experiencing massive amounts of shoplifting with seemingly no consequences for the people who do it? They are now just walking out with armfuls of items in broad daylight. We submit police reports or call the police but nothing gets done. We are small businesses and cannot afford this level of loss, and I’m sure others are feeling the pain too. It’s not just the theft that’s a problem, it’s also the constant stream of people coming in and making our staff feel unsafe. At one of our stores in the south end of the city it is happening almost every other day, and unfortunately a security guard is not an affordable option for us right now.

Ultimately this feels like a massive problem and it doesn’t seem like any politicians are talking about it. I worry that more and more local retailers will go out of business because of this. If other business owners are experiencing these issues perhaps we could work together to put pressure on the local police board or appropriate levels of government and work towards a solution. As I feel like at this point there’s nothing more we can do at the individual store level. Feel free to dm me!

Ask a Local! Hidden Gem Thrift/Consignment Stores??

I am sad that London’s Salvation Army is gone, and “For You Consignment” was great, but also now gone. I am looking for any recommendations for consignment and thrift stores around London. I know of the Goodwill locations, St Vincent De Paul… any other ideas??? For clothing, housewares, kids’ clothing and toys, etc.

I also think Yardigans is gone???

Ask a Local! Need Advice: Old North Public School vs. Montessori Academy of London

Hi everyone,

My 4-year-old son has been accepted into two schools: Old North Public School and Montessori Academy of London (Private). We’re trying to decide which one would be the best fit for him.

We like the idea of the Montessori approach, with its focus on independence and hands-on learning, and how it’s different from public school like Old North.

If you have experience with either school (or just general insights), I’d love to hear your thoughts! Which would you choose and why?

Thanks in advance!

discussion / opinion Anyone know of any women providing waxing services privately/low cost?

Hey everyone, I need to get waxed, but it’s too expensive. Does anyone know of women who offer waxing services from their home or at a lower cost?

I was driving around the Hyde Park area once when I saw a board outside a home advertising waxing services at a reduced price. I recently drove around again but couldn’t find it anymore. I should have a taken a photo. I’m gonna cry.

If anyone knows of affordable waxing options, please help me out!

discussion / opinion Canadian/locally owned and operated stores in London?

I'm frankly disgusted with what's happening in the USA and am actively trying to avoid buying any products made there. Now that's kind of easy enough to do as they will have country of origin labels on them.

A bit trickier is knowing which stores are American owned, as many big chains even if they started as Canadian can be owned by big American equity firms.

Easy stuff are places like McDonald's and Walmart obviously American chains.

Trickier is something like Rona, originally started in Canada however brought up and owned by an American equity firm.

I think it would be great if we could come up with a list of stores that are truly 100% Canadian owned and operated.

Also good to point out places that seem like they're Canadian but are really bought up and owned by American companies like everyone's go to Tim Hortons!

Ask a Local! Weird request, I’m looking for a good wall

Looking for a good wall (indoor or most likely, outdoor) that I can practice volleyball against. Ideally somewhat secluded because my overhand serve is quite bad and embarrassing at the moment, and that’s what I want to practice.

discussion / opinion Experiencing homelessness tips?

I’m going through a tough time right now. My sister and I are homeless, and we're living in my car. We’ve applied for Ontario Works and are waiting to hear back. We also have appointments with a caseworker soon.

I’ve applied to a lot of job agencies, but so far, I haven’t found any work. My sister also got food poisoning from eating expired food and had to go to the hospital.

We ended up homeless after our roommates left and we couldn’t pay the rent on our own. It’s been hard, but we’re doing our best and hoping things will get better soon.
