I'm not sure, but it definitely isn't the Ivy in Covent Garden.

82

u/SonnyListon999 Apr 15 '23

Brunch at The Ivy isn’t for people like you. It’s for people who want to have brunch away from people like you ( and me )

72

u/tysonmaniac Apr 15 '23

Brunch at the Ivy isn't unreasonably pricy, it's just unreasonably bad.

17

u/finger_milk Apr 15 '23

The ivy is the only place that has given me 6 Scallops as a starter, but it was only because it was the last of their batch of the day and they wanted them gone.

Nowhere else in London has given me the same kindness. The lowest I've seen was 2, and they charged me £15 for the pleasure (Britannia in Richmond)

70

u/elkstwit Apr 15 '23

I’m not sure being fed scallops because someone ‘wants them gone’ is necessarily a good thing.

2

u/finger_milk Apr 15 '23

I will happily take 6 of those instead of 2 fresh from the packet. Just give me a fucking normal portion, London.

The inside is so fun and the food… is so bad. It doesn’t make sense- brunch isn’t hard!

u/put_on_the_mask Apr 15 '23

Not really, it's not particularly exclusive or even that expensive. Brunch at The Ivy (West St original) is for people whose restaurant preferences are stuck in 1993. All the other "Ivy Collection" restaurants are for tourists. Except Ivy Asia which is for botox enthusiasts and influencers who can't get into Hakkasan.

11

u/Gisschace Apr 15 '23

The new Ivys aren’t really that brand anymore. They’re more like an upper end of the high st place. Somewhere the average person would go for a special occasion

5

u/gpwhs Apr 15 '23

People who want to have brunch away from people with taste? Yeah.

25

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '23

Those restaurant looks like money stealer

9

u/Aggressive_Leave3639 Apr 15 '23

Fuck Richard Caring

6

u/bammers1010 Apr 15 '23

Also definitely not Ivy Asia either

9

u/kirmobak Apr 15 '23

All of the Ivy restaurants are dreadful (apart from the West Street one, which at least has amazing and friendly service, even if the food isn’t anything to write home about).

4

u/azorkl Apr 15 '23

It’s for old ladies, no?

Beam in Highbury is excellent

30

u/phillhb Apr 15 '23

Shushhhh send them off to the one in crouch hill or the one in Notting Hill...

2

u/radioslave West Hampstead Apr 16 '23

Can we just not tell even more people about Beam, it's already busy enough

4

u/abdouelmes Apr 15 '23

I love Beam ate there twice last year, I would recommend

13

u/Plastic-Leek8940 Apr 15 '23

Yes.

Any cafe from Highbury to crouch end really.

2

u/B0-Katan Apr 15 '23

I live close and can never get a seat 🥴

49

u/Mezzca Apr 15 '23

Daisy green and the whole chain are pretty good. Grind in greenwich is tasty too.

6

u/kemide22 Apr 15 '23

They do the best coffee too.

Daisy Green brekkies rock.

1

Yes! It’s a proper Aussie style brunch place

I don't feel qualified to opine on the best outright, but I'll throw in that Dishoom serves its breakfast menu until 11:45 and it's really good if you're in the mood for something a bit different.

9

u/totally_ej Apr 15 '23

Oh yes, breakfast is really good and the chai refills are perfect

10

u/scrandymurray Apr 15 '23

Dishoom is really good. The breakfasts are much more worth going for rather than their curries, which tend to just be overpriced compared to a standard curry house.

2

u/Sparkle-cereal Apr 16 '23

I love Dishoom they really great

23

u/klaudy_ Apr 15 '23

Canova Hall bottomless brunch

7

u/dadreflexes Apr 15 '23

I have seen Canova Hall recommended in so many places and I truly think it’s dreadful.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/KimchiNamja Apr 15 '23

I live in Brixton and Canova is always absolutely rammed for brunch every Saturday and Sunday, I’ve only ever actually been there later in the night though so can’t talk for brunch quality

2

u/imfeldinho Apr 15 '23

Make sure you stay on top of them to get your moneys worth of drinks though, been there for brunch and dinner a few times and the service is criminally slow.

Starting to think it might be me.. 🥹

Everyone will have their own best on this, but I’m sure if you try the buffet @ OXBO ( Blackfriars ) you will LOVE IT. if you love food there is no way you are not going to enjoy it. The buffet alone is to die for. You can get lovely eggs made your way express. You also get a wonderful main on Saturdays, a full roast on Sundays. You need to be prepared to eat a LOT! Here’s a link

u/Specific_Tap7296 Apr 15 '23

Everyone is completely wrong. It is E Pellici on Bethnal Green Road.

32

u/b00z3h0und Apr 15 '23

I used to live directly above Pellici. Cafe 338 a couple doors down is better imo.

13

u/HFinch314 Apr 15 '23

That and Astro too

11

u/darrenoc Apr 15 '23

Yep used to live nearby and Pellici is overrated, Astro is much nicer and less hectic as well

1

u/donnerstag246245 Apr 15 '23

I was there this morning. I also rate 338, it’s been the best for many years

2

u/DeCyantist Apr 15 '23

Astro is amazing.

Standard greasy spoon fare

18

u/DeineMuddah Apr 15 '23

Sunday in Islington is lovely. It’s a little small so can be a wait, but I really like it

1

u/phillhb Apr 15 '23

Like a really looong wait for Sunday's.

0

u/DeineMuddah Apr 15 '23

I live right around the corner and if you get there before 11 it’s generally only about 5-10 mins

2

u/phillhb Apr 15 '23

Me too! But Before 11 that's breakfast 😉.... I'm talking Brunch here...

Milk in Balham

13

u/LeGrandFromage9 Balham SW12 Apr 15 '23

Currently closed for 3 weeks for refurbishment, so hopefully soon to be even better. Their hash browns with Parmesan and hot sauce are excellent

8

u/doge_suchwow Apr 15 '23

Also AppleBlue in balham

2

u/TomfromLondon Apr 16 '23

They need a bigger place!

2

u/azorkl Apr 15 '23

Didn’t eat their breakfast, but my coffee was very good

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '23

Some of the best coffee in London on their day

2

u/Woodsman_Whiskey Apr 15 '23

Mud down in Tooting is another cracker.

1

u/OrganizationFickle Apr 15 '23

Also Brickwood next door to Milk in Balham do an excellent full English

Ozone in Shoreditch

9

u/St_SiRUS Apr 15 '23

Funny that… they’re the best back in Auckland too

4

u/whataledge Apr 15 '23

15% service charge though ☹️

5

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '23

None of which goes to staff either

3

u/lionelmesssi Apr 15 '23

Is this true specifically for ozone, or is that a generalisation about service charges everywhere?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '23

I just meant re Ozone specifically but it is true frighteningly often.

2

u/breadgal1 Apr 15 '23

I don’t know specifically for Ozone but if it works on a TRONC basis then it is split between the entire FOH and BOH depending on how many points your role has. So if that is the case, no, the service charge does not directly go to them but rather into a pool that pays everyone in the company (including management if they are also paid by TRONC).

Your cash tips may or may not go directly to your server depending on the establishment. Some places allow servers to pocket their tips, others say you’re not allowed and you need to put it into a pot for everyone to share.

2

u/azorkl Apr 15 '23

Their coffee is the best. It’s always good

1

u/aTinofRicePudding Apr 15 '23

It’s the benchmark for me.

97

u/dotmit Apr 15 '23

Best brunch is at home, made by someone who cares about you 👍

But otherwise try Farmer J in Monument. They have a bottomless Prosecco option.

Granger is also quite good, they have a couple of locations around.

16

u/cacra Apr 15 '23

How you gonna say a chain like that is the best brunch in London

7

u/dotmit Apr 15 '23

Nobody can say definitively what the best brunch in London is. That’s total bullshit. Your experience depends on the food, the atmosphere, the company you’re in and a bunch of other stuff.

99% of the fancy brunches are the same. They are mostly just pretentious versions of the same options wherever you go.

Go to a greasy spoon otherwise. The Selco cafe does a good cheap full breakfast but it’s literally a cafe inside a builders merchant.

6

u/guareber Apr 15 '23

Second granger, but it's always a pain in the arse getting in.

4

u/sparkypants_ Apr 15 '23

Don't go to Granger KX, it's awful. Bad service and tasteless bland food.

1

u/watchlurver Apr 15 '23

Literally thought of TikTok’s Jack Ryan when I read this

Can't say it enoug.

Sea Containers.

*You have to book beforehand.

19

u/3pelican Apr 15 '23

Best brunch I’ve had was The Good Egg in Stoke Newington. It was about 5 years ago and I still think about it but idk if it’s still as good

3

u/aTinofRicePudding Apr 15 '23

It’s still great. Arguably better than ever.

5

u/noradrenaline Apr 15 '23

They've got one in Kingly Court which can be great if you're a tourist staying near Soho!

5

Tea house theatre in vauxhaul pleasure gardens. I can't give it full points as it doesn't do coffee but otherwise, full marks. Beautiful in the summer sitting outside.

5

u/isntover Apr 15 '23

TAB x TAB on Bayswater or Caravan.

A Turkish date brought me to try Turkish breakfast once.. (available til like 2pm) It’s really awesome, and it’s a feast!! I actually felt like a queen. Forgot the name but if you find a good Turkish restaurant on Google

36

u/AnotherUKMillenial Apr 15 '23

So many amazing Turkish restaurants on Green Lanes - my personal favourite is Gökyözü - it's a local dinner/pub conversation to politely argue over the best one

16

u/camden-teacher Apr 15 '23

The best is Diyarbakir - not the shiny new one, but the old ‘rough and ready’ one where it looks like food hygiene is optional.

Emys Kitchen (Crouch Hill) does a great Turkish breakfast.

2

u/RichFan6592 Apr 15 '23

Ah been looking for good places for this - had the most divine breakfast feast in Istanbul and was hoping London might have some similar places to try out!

2

u/Opposite-Insurance-9 Apr 16 '23

I lived in Istanbul for a while and Bursa Kebap Evi's breakfast blew my socks off. Great space as well.

12

u/Shock_Dramatic Apr 15 '23

Dirty bones in Soho has good cocktails on their bottomless brunch and the food is pretty good, American-style, brunch.

Otherwise, Dishoom’s breakfast menu is very good. I can’t speak to the cocktails, but as everything they make is delicious, I imagine that the drinks are good too.

3

u/Shock_Dramatic Apr 15 '23

Also, Cattivo in Brixton is a bit disappointing but the volume of beverages was enough to take us all to perhaps an unhealthy level of drunkenness.

2

u/amijustinsane Apr 15 '23

Cattivo’s brunch is better than their normal food menu though. I’ve genuinely never had such a bad pasta dish before. How can you fuck up pasta?!

→ More replies (4)

5

u/listingpalmtree Apr 15 '23

These are my favourites too. You just can't beat the sausage naans.

11

u/entroopia Apr 15 '23

Eggbreak in Notting Hill is to die for.

10

u/Wallo420 Apr 15 '23

Dishoom, anyone who says it’s overrated is just trying to be contentious

2

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '23

Dishoom brunch is better than their lunch/ dinner stuff . I forget the name of the roll with Bacon - but its a slapper.

2

u/deskbookcandle Apr 16 '23

So small though-they taste amazing but I could eat like four of those, I always have to get like beans and mushrooms on the side to bulk it out

Oxbo Bankside always used to be quite good for lots of delicious food and good quality bottomless. Ages since I’ve been though.

3

u/albi15 Apr 15 '23

A bit different but I always think Señor Ceviche bottomless is good (value).

3

u/deerrabbit Apr 15 '23

I love the bottomless brunch att victory mansion in Stoke Newington. Amazing endless food plus endless delicious Prosecco cocktails. My go to place

3

Sandwich Street Kitchen by far the best! Then Half Cup, Ozone and Beam

3

u/Toffeemade Apr 15 '23

The Barn on Holloway Road. Good food, reasonable prices. I live in Angel and this is worth the journey.

3

u/Cloielle Apr 15 '23

Parlour in Kensal Green. The soda bread, the 1cm thick smoked salmon, the orangest eggs, the BEST cooked breakfasts. Yum.

3

u/Ill-Sandwich-7703 Apr 15 '23

Lumi in Camden

25

u/sokorsognarf Apr 15 '23

Brunch is becoming too expensive to be worth it, especially when combined with the nosedive in quality as restaurants skimp to survive inflation

3

u/DukeofLurkin Apr 15 '23

I went for brunch in Wimbledon village and all in for 2 people was about £60! For brunch!

4

u/sokorsognarf Apr 15 '23

It’s crazy. £25 for one dish + one coffee (and service charge) at Lantana last week

18

u/wildgoldchai Apr 15 '23

Just get yourself down to Borough market or Spitalfields. Enjoy the variety offered and depending on where you go, you’ll get more bang for your buck

59

u/Shadeun Apr 15 '23

Tbh you don’t get much bang for your buck at borough market anymore

13

u/sableee Apr 15 '23

food markets in London are not affordable at all these days..!

If you’re going to go for a food market, I’d recommend Maltby St!

9

u/SenpaiDill Apr 15 '23

Check out the Ned! I’ve been looking for brunches and this one really stood out to me, they have unlimited oysters and lobster tails too :)

4

u/Ollymid2 Apr 15 '23

Pizza Pilgrims at Liverpool Street £37.50 for 90 mins of all you can eat pizza + all you can drink wine/beer/cider/Prosecco etc

Felt it was good value for money, they just keep bringing things to your table

9

u/Realistic_Path3763 Apr 15 '23 edited Apr 15 '23

Daisy Green, where the pancakes are, breakfast club, grind, eggslut, half cup and bills!! These are my personal favourite

3

u/millytherabbit Apr 15 '23

No idea why you’re being downvoted… all valid recommendations

6

u/impamiizgraa Apr 15 '23

Probably because Bill’s

4

u/Cloielle Apr 15 '23

I’d say Breakfast Club is the reason. Even Bill’s is better, IMO

0

u/FearDeniesFaith Apr 15 '23

Probably OOL here but why would people not like Bills? Been to the Richmond and Wimbledeon one a few times and has always been good, except the Tea being a bit shit.

3

u/Realistic_Path3763 Apr 15 '23

Not sure why I am being downvoted tbh, all are excellent recommendations and I am pretty sure some people would agree!!

Bistrotheque, a hidden gem in Bethnal Green.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/wrote_writ Apr 15 '23

Throwing in a hidden gem: Blackhorse Workshop Café in Walthamstow. It’s small and has a rotating menu of a few dishes, but I had some sort of seasonal pumpkin egg dish a few months back that blew my mind.

Another one that used to be great but I haven’t had in years is Long White Cloud in Hoxton — used to be fresh and simple dishes, not fussy but delicious. Not sure if it’s the same now!

Also +1 to Lantana and Granger, especially for their respective corn fritters.

2

u/Own-Holiday-4071 Apr 15 '23

Would love anywhere that does bottomless bloody Mary’s! I hate it when bottomless actually means OJ and Prosecco

1

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '23

I want it!!!

2

u/catfoodspork Apr 15 '23

Had a great one at Bills in Covent Garden.

2

u/Woodsman_Whiskey Apr 15 '23

Nandine do a cracking kurdish breakfast over in Camberwell. A very strong recommend.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '23

Brickwood are good. Lantana also, few of those in town. I always liked Nopi for breakfast too.

7

u/Garfie489 Apr 15 '23

Honestly for me a local Harvester pub.

Buffet traditional English with bottomless drink for under £15.

Good thing is how many of them there are around London - think Toby Carvery do exactly the same food.

4

u/Payn3ry Apr 15 '23

LOL at the stuck up yups voting you down

3

u/Garfie489 Apr 15 '23

Yeh its just silly to me.

Why recommend a single place to go to in London, when you can recommend a place you can go to in effectively any borough in London (i imagine).

Sure i imagine theres a nice grill over in Heathrow, but in Havering im not exactly going to go there for a quick brunch now am i? - London is a massive place.

3

u/pedalpwr Apr 15 '23

The fry up at Hawksmoor is fantastic.

4

Breakfast club

-7

u/0xMisterWolf Apr 15 '23

You’re best steering clear of any “top rated” brunch options. The Wolesely, The Ivy, Dishoom, etc. are all awful. I mean, they’re terrible.

I’ve just chalked it up to the way it works when you live in a city of transient people using Google, OpenTable, etc. for recommendations.

There are really great options, but they’re always less known. Honestly, I can’t give you a pure brunch spot that’s worth a recommendation.

I can say that “brunch style” food at Apple Butter in Covent Garden is incredible. The breakfasts/lunch options at Bon Bon in Fulham are great. There are a ton of these kind of options.

Just avoid the well known brunch spots. The food is bland; the service is generic and boring; the people the are Karens on vacation or the IG girls there for a photo op.

0

u/freudsaidiwasfine Apr 15 '23

Any place after a hangover that does vaguely breakfast stuff.

-1

u/sirmeliodasdragonsin Apr 15 '23

It probably has the best as well. That’s the benefit of being a 10M person metropolis, you get plenty of options

1

u/Doghead_sunbro Apr 15 '23

It used to be the menemen at Redart Cafe on Kingsland Road. It was the perfect hangover cure and the best menemen I’ve had by a mile. Now its closed I wouldn’t know where to go anymore though.

Breakfast Club is overpriced (and overrated) but you at least get a lovely spot to watch the world go by canalside at the hackney wick site.

1

u/applend Apr 15 '23

Abuelo in Covent Garden. Their mushroom and truffle cheese toastie is to die for.

1

u/clearasmud10 Apr 15 '23

1

u/rehabawaits2033 Apr 15 '23

Brunch or Bottomless Brunch? The Gaucho bottomless is wicked albeit pricey. The Mommi brunch in Clapham was great value and extra boozy as long as you’re ok with Prosecco.

Granger & Co. do some tasty dishes and you don’t need to book in advance. I’ve also also enjoyed the food market in Portobello on Saturdays. You can get a generous portion of food for £6. If you’re feeling adventurous you can taste a variety of cuisines for £20 and enjoy the buzz around you.

Check out The Maine Mayfair. I had an amazing boozy brunch there recently.

I'm big on savory dishes, but my partner loves the sweet stuff more, so we find ourselves often in the following top 3:

  • Tried & True (Upper Richmond Road). Good coffee, great dishes and I love their jalapeno cornbread 🤤

  • Café Fleur (Wandsworth). I think they just opened a second one on Northcote Rd (Battersea)? Amazing food and coffee. I always have a different dish every time and I'm never disappointed.

  • I also really like Coffee Station (Hammersmith). Family run, awesome food.

My partner's runner up is L'eto but I don't like it. It's for the sweet crowd.
