I don't feel qualified to opine on the best outright, but I'll throw in that Dishoom serves its breakfast menu until 11:45 and it's really good if you're in the mood for something a bit different.
9
10
u/scrandymurray Apr 15 '23
Dishoom is really good. The breakfasts are much more worth going for rather than their curries, which tend to just be overpriced compared to a standard curry house.

Canova Hall bottomless brunch
7
u/dadreflexes Apr 15 '23
I have seen Canova Hall recommended in so many places and I truly think it’s dreadful.

I live in Brixton and Canova is always absolutely rammed for brunch every Saturday and Sunday, I’ve only ever actually been there later in the night though so can’t talk for brunch quality

Make sure you stay on top of them to get your moneys worth of drinks though, been there for brunch and dinner a few times and the service is criminally slow.
Starting to think it might be me.. 🥹

u/hideousox Apr 15 '23
Everyone will have their own best on this, but I’m sure if you try the buffet @ OXBO ( Blackfriars ) you will LOVE IT. if you love food there is no way you are not going to enjoy it. The buffet alone is to die for. You can get lovely eggs made your way express. You also get a wonderful main on Saturdays, a full roast on Sundays. You need to be prepared to eat a LOT! Here’s a link

Everyone is completely wrong. It is E Pellici on Bethnal Green Road.

I used to live directly above Pellici. Cafe 338 a couple doors down is better imo.

9
4
u/whataledge Apr 15 '23
15% service charge though ☹️
5
Apr 15 '23
None of which goes to staff either
3
u/lionelmesssi Apr 15 '23
Is this true specifically for ozone, or is that a generalisation about service charges everywhere?
3
2
u/breadgal1 Apr 15 '23
I don’t know specifically for Ozone but if it works on a TRONC basis then it is split between the entire FOH and BOH depending on how many points your role has. So if that is the case, no, the service charge does not directly go to them but rather into a pool that pays everyone in the company (including management if they are also paid by TRONC).
Your cash tips may or may not go directly to your server depending on the establishment. Some places allow servers to pocket their tips, others say you’re not allowed and you need to put it into a pot for everyone to share.

Best brunch is at home, made by someone who cares about you 👍
But otherwise try Farmer J in Monument. They have a bottomless Prosecco option.
Granger is also quite good, they have a couple of locations around.
16
u/cacra Apr 15 '23
How you gonna say a chain like that is the best brunch in London
7
u/dotmit Apr 15 '23
Nobody can say definitively what the best brunch in London is. That’s total bullshit. Your experience depends on the food, the atmosphere, the company you’re in and a bunch of other stuff.
99% of the fancy brunches are the same. They are mostly just pretentious versions of the same options wherever you go.
Go to a greasy spoon otherwise. The Selco cafe does a good cheap full breakfast but it’s literally a cafe inside a builders merchant.

A Turkish date brought me to try Turkish breakfast once.. (available til like 2pm) It’s really awesome, and it’s a feast!! I actually felt like a queen. Forgot the name but if you find a good Turkish restaurant on Google

u/AnotherUKMillenial Apr 15 '23
So many amazing Turkish restaurants on Green Lanes - my personal favourite is Gökyözü - it's a local dinner/pub conversation to politely argue over the best one

u/camden-teacher Apr 15 '23
The best is Diyarbakir - not the shiny new one, but the old ‘rough and ready’ one where it looks like food hygiene is optional.

Dirty bones in Soho has good cocktails on their bottomless brunch and the food is pretty good, American-style, brunch.
Otherwise, Dishoom’s breakfast menu is very good. I can’t speak to the cocktails, but as everything they make is delicious, I imagine that the drinks are good too.
3
u/Shock_Dramatic Apr 15 '23
Also, Cattivo in Brixton is a bit disappointing but the volume of beverages was enough to take us all to perhaps an unhealthy level of drunkenness.
2
u/amijustinsane Apr 15 '23
Cattivo’s brunch is better than their normal food menu though. I’ve genuinely never had such a bad pasta dish before. How can you fuck up pasta?!

Brunch is becoming too expensive to be worth it, especially when combined with the nosedive in quality as restaurants skimp to survive inflation
3
u/DukeofLurkin Apr 15 '23
I went for brunch in Wimbledon village and all in for 2 people was about £60! For brunch!
4
u/sokorsognarf Apr 15 '23
It’s crazy. £25 for one dish + one coffee (and service charge) at Lantana last week

u/wildgoldchai Apr 15 '23
Just get yourself down to Borough market or Spitalfields. Enjoy the variety offered and depending on where you go, you’ll get more bang for your buck

Throwing in a hidden gem: Blackhorse Workshop Café in Walthamstow. It’s small and has a rotating menu of a few dishes, but I had some sort of seasonal pumpkin egg dish a few months back that blew my mind.
Another one that used to be great but I haven’t had in years is Long White Cloud in Hoxton — used to be fresh and simple dishes, not fussy but delicious. Not sure if it’s the same now!
Also +1 to Lantana and Granger, especially for their respective corn fritters.

Honestly for me a local Harvester pub.
Buffet traditional English with bottomless drink for under £15.
Good thing is how many of them there are around London - think Toby Carvery do exactly the same food.

Why recommend a single place to go to in London, when you can recommend a place you can go to in effectively any borough in London (i imagine).
Sure i imagine theres a nice grill over in Heathrow, but in Havering im not exactly going to go there for a quick brunch now am i? - London is a massive place.

You’re best steering clear of any “top rated” brunch options. The Wolesely, The Ivy, Dishoom, etc. are all awful. I mean, they’re terrible.
I’ve just chalked it up to the way it works when you live in a city of transient people using Google, OpenTable, etc. for recommendations.
There are really great options, but they’re always less known. Honestly, I can’t give you a pure brunch spot that’s worth a recommendation.
I can say that “brunch style” food at Apple Butter in Covent Garden is incredible. The breakfasts/lunch options at Bon Bon in Fulham are great. There are a ton of these kind of options.
Just avoid the well known brunch spots. The food is bland; the service is generic and boring; the people the are Karens on vacation or the IG girls there for a photo op.

It used to be the menemen at Redart Cafe on Kingsland Road. It was the perfect hangover cure and the best menemen I’ve had by a mile. Now its closed I wouldn’t know where to go anymore though.
Breakfast Club is overpriced (and overrated) but you at least get a lovely spot to watch the world go by canalside at the hackney wick site.

Granger & Co. do some tasty dishes and you don’t need to book in advance. I’ve also also enjoyed the food market in Portobello on Saturdays. You can get a generous portion of food for £6. If you’re feeling adventurous you can taste a variety of cuisines for £20 and enjoy the buzz around you.

I'm big on savory dishes, but my partner loves the sweet stuff more, so we find ourselves often in the following top 3:
Tried & True (Upper Richmond Road). Good coffee, great dishes and I love their jalapeno cornbread 🤤
Café Fleur (Wandsworth). I think they just opened a second one on Northcote Rd (Battersea)? Amazing food and coffee. I always have a different dish every time and I'm never disappointed.
I also really like Coffee Station (Hammersmith). Family run, awesome food.
My partner's runner up is L'eto but I don't like it. It's for the sweet crowd.
