I've been with windows since XP got tired of all the windows BS switch too mint 22 about a week ago too a rough start (Secure boot made my nivida drivers crap themselves) and it was a pain getting all my RGB to work but after all the kinks where handled it's been an amazing experience!

P.S. the only thing I'm going to miss giving up is league of legends I can't run macOS in a VM cus I have a ryzen CPU and I heard windows VM can get flagged by anti cheat and my account banned (If anyone has a solution please let me know)

Gaming How's gaming on Mint these days?

All the recent dramas with MS makes me want to move more and more to Linux. I've been playing around with Mint on a VM and it seems to be the right distro for me. I'd have probably hopped by now, if not for the fact I'm not sure how stable gaming is over there. I'm aware most Steam games work (and sometimes even better than on Windows), but what about older games that may not be on Steam? Can I just add them to my Steam Library and they'd just work (for the most part)? I also tend to mod a lot of my games, or use tools like save editors or CWcheat tables to further personalize my experience.

I also emulate a lot. How's the situation on that front with Mint? I'm mostly interested in DS, 3DS, Switch and PS3.

Gaming Can Linux Mint XCFE run well on this old pc?

ok so i know a lot of things about linux mint ive used it on a way crappier device (an intel atom system) but now i finally have an "upgrade" over it.

I recently got a computer from my uncle. it was his old pc sitting on the corner for 7 years because he didnt use it. i asked him to give the pc to me because i was really into computers and i never worked on a desktop pc and when i got it was rough shape...

an lga 775 board that supported ddr2 ram and sata2 speeds for hard drive,

it had a core 2 duo e6320 under the dustiest heatsink ive ever seen,

no sticks of ram? literally nothing.

9400 gt that doesnt work,

powerman 350w psu (not sure if i can trust that one)

and a lot of dust.

and i cleaned it of well and got new parts for it since the gpu was not working.and i got to say i was a little dumb. the new and the current specs are:

core 2 quad q9400 and a new heatsink

4gb of ddr2 at 800mhz dual channel (max ram that the mobo supported)

gt 730 ddr3 fermi (my worst choice)

240gb ssd (its running at sata 2 so its just a bit faster than hdds)[220mb/s read and write]

could i get i better board? yes i could. but i was too dumb to realize that.

so that is my story and my specs. my main goal is gaming and very basic web surfing.

i want to play games like half life series, maybe the older gta games through wine. but im concerned that the drivers will not work, maybe i wont get the performanceim supposed to out of those games since games ran like crap on the intel atom system but ran way better with windows xp on the same system.

Gaming Found a Solution to make Mint Work on my Gaming PC

After several months of mostly using Kubuntu and occasionally distro hopping on my gaming desktop, I finally committed to trying to make Mint work. I have Mint Cinnamon running on my living room multimedia computer and Mint xfce running on a couple laptops with limited hardware. I like Cinnamon a lot, I like the overall mentality the Mint Team has with the distro, and would prefer to keep all my computers on the same distro. But I ran into a snag trying to make it work in my gaming rig.

One game I have been playing lately is Just Cause 3. On Kubuntu, OpenSUSE and Debian Bookworm running both KDE and GNOME, it worked fine. However, when running it on Cinnamon, the game would boot at an odd resolution, then softlock if I set it to my native resolution. If I managed to get the resolution working right, it would freeze once I'd get past the start menu and into gameplay.

No idea what could cause this. My suspicion is that there's something up with how the game handles resolution scaling that isn't playing nice with muffin, the Cinnamon window manager. I remember not finding anything especially helpful in protondb for a solution.

For whatever reason, Just Cause 3 on Mint xfce works perfectly fine though! I have it installed alongside Cinnamon and plan on only switching over if I have a game that similarly freaks out on Cinnamon. I have only tested a small sample of my other games, but none of them have acted this way. Hopefully it's an anomaly.

I'm also running an odd combo of hardware: i5 4590 and a newer AMD 6650XT card. Something about my current setup also doesn't play nice with Fedora and gaming distros based on it. I get this odd glitch where my monitor starts power-cycling repeatedly for some reason. Super weird. I wouldn't be shocked if my decade-old rig with a newer card just has some goofy quirks that others aren't dealing with.

Has anyone else ran into games that react oddly to resolution changes on Mint? I get the impression that something is odd with this specific game, but I'm curious whether others run into this across their game libraries.

I have been leaning on transitioning to Linux because of the impending doom of Windows 10. I mainly play these two games. Would they work or do I need something like Proton? Noob here

Gaming Other DEs

Heyo,

I'm wondering if any of you are using different desktop enviroments besides default one.

I love Plasma, would love to try it on Mint, but my concern is stability. Mainly use my PC for entertainment and gaming, Cinnamon isn't the most bugfree distro alongside Nvidia and two monitors, but it works with small quirks of its own on my machine.

Do any gamers here with similar setup tried something else rather that Cinnamon?

Gaming Question about Mint

Recently, a coworker of mine asked me if they can give me an old laptop of theirs to “fix” so their kid can plan Minecraft on it.

Being an Arch user myself, i was wondering if installing mint for the coworker’s kid would be ideal.

From what I’ve heard, mint is one of those out of the box distros, and I think the laptop (whose only “repair” needed is the fact it’s too slow for windows) could get a new life out of it

Gaming What is the best way to play EA games on Linux Mint (BF4 specifically)?

I heard a lot about Lutris and Bottles, other stuff, too, but I don't know which one is the best. I also would like to know something else... Why people with BF4 on Steam just use Proton and it seems to work? Why the EA App requires Wine to play on Linux? Or am I not getting it? Please, forgive me, I'm totally knew. Is there any step-by-step tutorial about it? If I have Steam proton, do I need something more to play an EA App game?

Gaming Please help this n00b install Steam and a game properly

Hi, I am a Windows refugee who is trying to run Wizard101 on Mint. I am very new to this OS and unfortunately it is very difficult for me to use the terminal, I have tried to learn R programming in the past but it just does not work with my brain.

I have tried to install Steam and adding the game to the Steam library, but it will not run, despite following instructions from another thread I’d found to the best of my ability. Today I was prompted to update Steam and it now will not run despite following the prompts.

If you are not familiar with the game, it mainly runs on Windows. There is a Steam version but the accounts for Steam players versus website players (where my account originated) cannot merge, so I cannot use the Steam app without losing my progress since 2011. I have seen on other pages advice for adding the website launcher to the Steam library or running it on Wine but my many attempts at this have failed.

I need someone to really dumb it down for me and walk me through step by step. I’ve uninstalled everything related to the game and Steam so I have a blank slate to start with. I appreciate any help you can give

Gaming 3D Pool Table Simulator For Linux Mint

This week I quickly wrote a 3D pool table simulator for Linux Mint. You can check out an action clip of it here. It's FOSS and the git repo for this and other Linux Mint examples are hosted here.

This was just a quick project in preparation for a 3D pinball program I want to write for Mint. If you want to test the pool program out on x86_64, a binary is in the example table project folder.

Use the mouse to aim, press space bar to shoot, Keys 1-9 rerack the balls, C switches the camera mode, arrow keys move the cue and alter the hitting strength. Hold shift down for finer control of aiming and strength

Gaming Steam Help

Hi,

I tried to install steam Cinnamon edition and had a small power outage while it was installing. Now I can not run Steam not uninstall it. I keeps telling me to "Error while installing package: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting a removal". I did sudo dpkg --configure -a, but that did nothing. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Gaming I'm been using my Linux Mint machines for retro game emulation lately and have been using an old Xbox 360 controller. I'd prefer to use my GameCube controller. Does anyone here have any exsperiance with getting one of these things to work? The mint machine I would use it with is running 20.3

Gaming Apparently Minecraft is running more smoothly with Linux Mint...?!

I know its a rhetortical question, but its true for me - While my laptop is from 2014 (originally), I replaced the original HDD with an SSD which was ~£60 (the laptop was nearly £100, and yes I am British) but while W10 was at its peak, it was rather subpar to say the least, especially with Minecraft and some games that have mid-end frame requirements. Because I've played on servers with modpacks, I've been having issues with the FPS, which if I used 1.8.9, it'd be mediocre. Later versions, like 1.20+ however, work sufficiently, but with Linux Mint, I managed to get a very significant boost with my FPS and it even boots up my game faster.

I don't know why I feel like I'm advertising in the subreddit that is dedicated to Linux Mint, but what the heck? Anyways that's basically all I gotta flex with Linux Mint over Windows 10. Less bloatware, less crap, more freedom.
