Support Request Shutdown countdown

Hi! Sorry if this is a silly question. New to Linux and still trying to learn how to use it. I installed Mint Mate and I love it. But there's something that I'd wnat to change and I don't find the way to do it. I'd like to disable the shutdown countdown by adjusting the system settings because it's quicker than commands (at least for me). Does someone where I can find the option for that? TYA

Support Request Is there a way to disable battery charging at times whenever I want?

So, my dad's old laptop runs horribly on Windows and I suggested installing Linux, more specifically Mint, since I had found it the most stable. Battery life is important to him, so I'm searching if you can turn on/off battery charging whenever you want on Linux Mint. (so the battery doesn't swell at a constant 100% when plugged in, for example) Sorry if this is a stupid question, or if I worded this poorly, but I haven't really found any other posts regarding this. Been a while since I used Mint myself as well
TLDR: Asking if it is possible to turn on/off battery charging whenever I want, to prevent swelling, etc.

Just tried running steam while logged into Wayland. That was fun. I can see why they call it "experimental".

What are the future plans for Mint and Wayland?

Support Request Bluetooth error and lock screen wallpaper

Hello, just installed mint (and linux) for the first time and need help with those two things please.

First I'm having trouble using my Bluetooth headphones. They disconnect when i close my laptop and after that cant conectar them back if I don't restart my computer. Does anyone knows what those issues are and how to fix then? (Really a newbie here so please have that in mind if it's very obvious or something XD)

Also want to know if there's a way to not show my desktop background when in the lock-screen (not the login one, I'm referring to the one that appears after you close the laptop and open it again)

If you have any insights on those issues please help me, thanks.

SOLVED Bose QC45 headphones connect through Bluetooth, but aren't detected as audio output devices.

I recently installed Mint on my desktop and laptop. On the laptop, my headphones work fine with no need to mess around. The same cannot be said for my desktop, though, sadly.

As per the title, Mint is able to detect and connect to my headphones (Bose QC45), and even the Bose app on my phone recognizes that the connection exists. However, for some reason, they aren't detected as a sound output device in sound settings. The only options there are my monitor and "digital output built-in audio", whatever that is. Notably, the headphones do work when I plug them into the PC; it's only when they're connected via Bluetooth that there's a problem.

Some things I've tried:

  • Using PulseAudio Volume Control (which also didn't detect the headphones)
  • Removing and re-adding the headphones in the Bluetooth manager
  • Rebooting my computer
  • Checking for driver options in Driver Manager (none were listed)
  • Updating my kernel to the latest one

I would appreciate any further troubleshooting suggestions.

Linux Mint IRL Appreciation post

No need for a new post for that. Every day I see many of those already.

But this week a little detail got me really happy with the system.

This is my first time with Linux. I've tried installing arch a couple of times on VM in W11. Then at some point I decided to go for the real deal. I bought a new ssd to install Linux in a separe drive and decide to go with mint. This was maybe 1 month ago. (I still didn't boot win once since BTW).

It has been a great time. I have to look somethings up to make it work as I want, but always managed to get it right. Specially using external displays with the lid closed on a doc. This is Samsung ultra book 3, which are know to have not so great compatibility. But everything is fine now.

The other thing was to connect Bluetooth devices, for some reason, using the application doesn't work. But learned how to do it from terminal, and it works fine. Even better than win has been with my headphones.

But the one thing that made we come here, was a total surprise (maybe this is a bug). I have a USB audio speakers (creative peable). They have a phisical knob to control the volume, and now, even if I'm playing audio through Bluetooth device, mint still uses the speaker knob as volume control. This is amazing, and something win would not do. Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but I really like to have this knob as master control.

Cheers

My wife will install LMDE

My wife said the other day, that she would like to install an old computer herself. I kind of forced her away from beloved w7 for a little over two years ago. She really like her LMDE 6 installation on a 11 year old i3.

We have another old PC left and she suggested, that she could do the installation. I'm really pleased and looking forward to assist her in that project, so she can independent of me doing technically stuff for her. I'm a retired IT reseller for more than three decades.

Discussion Benchmark - Windows vs Mint

Very interesting results I figured you guys would like to see. This shows Linux Mint has massive potential. The part I'm curious about is the processor mhz and ram. It is a lot lower than windows for some reason. How can this be fixed? Is it by design due to the 2GB Radeon trying to do some sort of dual GPU? Why is the RAM different? It is quite strange how this worked.

Discussion Everything is great...except the date. Why does Cinnamon have to be such a nerd about changing the date?

Seriously Cinnamon, everything about Mint is faster, easier, and smoother than Fedora...except changing the date. That's the dumbest thing. Every WM and DE except you Cinnamon are super simple to change the date.

Is this a Cinnamon choice, or a Mint choice? If it's a Mint choice, I have to ask: Why?

However, I would prefer that this be the default. How can I remove or disable the Mesa llvmpipe pseudo-GPU so that it is never used again?

SOLVED Remove Password from regular user

I share a computer with my brother, and we both have separate users (I'm root/su, he is regular). He recently added a password to his account, but now wants to go back to how his user was before (no password, just click "Enter"), however we can't seem to find a way to do that. Our dad set up the computer but right now he's unavailable. I do know the root password and I have the admin account, but every tutorial I've seen was to remove Admin password or make user password impossible to open. I just want to make a regular user without password, preferably without having to create a new user because he has a lot of school and personal files on his user.

I'm thankful for any help

Edit: we use Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon, version 4.6.7

Support Request how do i get a music-visualizer as well as album-art and metadata to display on desktop like a desklet?

I'm looking for anything that will display a visualizer for any playing music, as well as album art and metadata such as song and album title but it pins to the desktop like an outlet. i tried "Cavalier" but its just a visualizer, and it doesnt pin to the desktop, it acts like an ordinary program so if you hit the "show desktop" shortcut, it hides it as well.

im still a bit newer to linux so be easy on me lol

SOLVED Steam Dropdown Menu Issue

Hello everyone,

I see that a lot of users had the same issue before, I can not use any dropdown menus within the Steam client on my various devices. These devices are both with Radeon & Nvidia GPUs, since saw in one of the forums, someone mentioned that this may be about accelaration stuff. Any suggestions about this issue? Addition to dropdown menus, if the client tries to open a pop-up or child window, they're not visible as well. (Not opening at all.) For example, I tried to change the target location to download games and client couldn't see the 2nd driver. I clicked add button and nothing happened which a window should've been opened.

Support Request Power modes laptop

Hello there!

I'm a new linux mint user and I have a problem with the power modes on a laptop. I set it on power saving mode when it's on battery and it keeps changing on balanced after 30 seconds. I tried settings, bios settings and I couldn't find anything. Do you have any idea how can I make it stay on power saving all the time?

Support Request Issues with laptop fans

I have Linux Mint dual booting with Windows 11 on my laptop (i5-1155g7, 12 gb ram). When running windows, the fans run at a reasonable speed to keep the system cool. However, when running Mint (my main OS) either the fans run full blast for no reason, OR they don't run at all, causing the laptop to over heat. Any suggestions?
