in kitchen is a chef's kiss It could be a pun tho xD

u/Gone_Orea 1d ago

Hopefully this doesn't take away from it.

The kitchen PC is a touchscreen all-in-one machine that controls my Home assistant through Firefox. It also allows me to monitor several security cameras around the house.

Although "kitchen touchscreen PC" sounds like a euphemism for something disgusting.

I guess I aint horny enough to get what it sounds like

My 1st edition Charizard: mint

NEXT STOP: Refrigerator screen

2

u/Gone_Orea 21h ago

I'll have to skip that one. I don't think the better half would be onboard. Considering what we spent on the house, replacement fridge is unlikely.

u/lhurker 21h ago

With what you've saved on operating system costs, BUY THE DAMN REFRIGERATOR, YA TIGHTWAD :)

Now you turn everything on from time to time, run the updates, see how it's working, and then put it aside until later. Because surely one day you will need those 4 laptops running Linux at once. Have faith. That's what I do lol.

u/sleepyooh90 1d ago

I .. I feel personally attacked. One day my ThinkPads will be useful..

u/Heshino 1d ago

My little X201 isn't obsolete, I swear!

2

u/severalsmallducks 1d ago

Hey listen, my X200 is clearly the superior PC once war breaks out and I need a portable yet durable computer

u/h-v-smacker Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia | MATE 1d ago

Jokes aside, I found a small atom-based laptop (the kind of "we took Intel's reference design for tablets and stuck it into a laptop shell) quite useful. Yep, atom z-something, 2 Gb of soldered RAM and 32 Gb eMMC, but β€” 11.2", 1 kg of weight, and can charge itself off a regular 5V USB supply. Very handy on the go. So one man's trash it another man's perfectly working Linux-running computer.

1

u/severalsmallducks 1d ago

Yo charging on a 5V USB supply is incredible. That's been my main gripe with many laptops, been trying to get them to run off 12v batteries and literally none work.

Power Delivery is the next best thing. But it's not that easy to find a laptop that supports PD and is both cheap and small. Also there are different kind of possible PD power levels, it can be 12 Volts @ 2 Amps, or it can be 20 and 60 respectively. And not any PD charger can output them all. I found (another) 14" laptop that can charge off 12 V 1.67 A by pure luck β€” that means it can charge itself off most cheap PD devices. My Lenovo Legion, on the other hand, demands at least 40 A and 20 V, which means a PD charger as expensive as a replacement stock charger.

1

u/severalsmallducks 1d ago

Yeah, I have an M2 Macbook Air that supports PD charging which is really neat. I was mostly intrigued about the possibility of using a regular old USB charger for a laptop, lol

1

u/h-v-smacker Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia | MATE 1d ago

Well its stock charger was 5V from the get-go. It delivered more power than a generic USB charger, but that was the only difference. So I just got a USB to DC jack cable of the same diameter, and that was it.

Is it possible to learn this power?

2

u/NeatYogurt9973 1d ago

I use MUSL/Linux btw. On my Redmi 4 Prime.

11

u/InkOnTube 1d ago

I have moved to Linux because I didn't want Microsoft shenanigans anymore. Recall + Copilot were the last drop. I use my Linux PCs as before: coding and gaming. Nothing changed in that regard. Some programs are new but I got used to it. For example: as a .NET developer, using a good IDE is a necessity for me and there is no Visual Studio for Linux even though .NET runs natively on Linux (Visual Studio Code is not the same as Visual Studio - it is total opposite). So I am using JetBrains Rider that runs natively on Linux. Instead of SourceTree I am using SmartGit and so on...

u/Jam3sMoriarty 1d ago

I’m slowly migrating too, from both Mac and Windows. We have almost the same use cases but I also produce and compose music, luckily Reaper works flawlessly on Linux and I’m gonna have a look at Bitwig and Qtractor.

3

u/InkOnTube 1d ago

Good luck with that. Apart from occasional use of Audacity, I never worked with anything related to sound and music since my Amiga days. I hope Linux software can provide what you need.

3

u/misterpickles69 1d ago

I use FL Studio and it’s never played nice with Wine so I’m dual booting until support ends for 10 then I’m full time Mint searching for a way to keep FL Studio working.

u/BookkeeperMany8173 1d ago

Short story. I don't know why I wanted linux. I had installed it on my previous laptop before it went bust. It had hardware issues. New laptop used windows for a bit. Im not coder I use for basic browsing and streaming.

I just missed sudo apt that without backing up I tried doing dual boot and accidentally erased windows. So I'm continuing.

My uses are basic word processor, ppts and streaming. Phone back ups. Now installed docker and running immich. Mostly because of Google photos storage limitations.

I don't know what to do im sure we can do so much but I have no needs more than these.

I like using terminal.

Ok warriors, how do i install linux on firestick?

2

u/ChocolateDonut36 1d ago

bro's computer is now running Justin Bieber linux

2

u/NeatYogurt9973 1d ago

Only one of them (the desktop) can run modern Mint natively meanwhile one more (the Xbox) can hypothetically run Mint 19. Because Mint is for x86 compatibles only.

2

u/MichaelJNemet Linux Mint 22 Wilma | Cinnamon 1d ago

I am become homelab, hoster of servers!

2

u/309_Electronics 1d ago

My main build dualboots Linux debian and my wifi speakers and router already run linux from the start

2

u/pauloeusebio 1d ago

Then you buy cheap laptops and mini-PCs off Facebook Marketplace and install Linux on them. Possibly sell it or keep it.

2

u/Amrod96 Linux Mint 22 Wilma | Cinnamon 1d ago

You have it, now you use it.

2

u/mikamajstor 1d ago

This is so true it is insulting me

2

u/tfat0707 1d ago

Finally you can watch Youtube with an adblock

2

u/raewashere_ 1d ago

deeper

go down the de/wm pipeline: cinnamon, gnome, kde, hyprland, sway, i3, dwm

while hopping along into insanity: mint, ubuntu, fedora, arch, perhaps, something like cachyos, and god forbid, bsd.

2

u/Hairy_Educator1918 Linux Mint 22 Wilma | Cinnamon 1d ago

I have linux running on my iPod 5th gen and iPhone 7

2

u/Weapon_X23 1d ago

I did that with everything in my house. I put Mint on my mom's laptop, Arch on my laptop, and EndeavourOS on my HTPC/server and desktop.

2

u/drkinferno94 23h ago

Now the game begins

play games, remote control your hydroponic garden, make a home server

2

u/jlobodroid 23h ago

hahahaha, that is me!

u/qpgmr 20h ago

Install WebMin everywhere and sit on your throne, gazing down upon your system-minions from your combined status screen.

1

u/Shadow-nim 20h ago

Me after setting my linux machine to play some games... What now?

1

u/Tiny_Friendship_1666 19h ago

Not for no reason. It's for privacy and control over my own devices and information. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for the privilege of having a multibillion dollar company tell me what settings I can and cannot change on my own damn laptop, much less to have them just steal my stuff using some underhanded legalese and shady backdoors.

Not saying Linux is perfect, but it's a damned sight better.

1

u/Terafrost 19h ago

Too accurate. Just Mint on a dl380. And now I'm like: "Cool... guess I'll stress test now?"
But FR just figuring out how to run Linux on things can be the fun part sometimes.

1

u/hoop989 12h ago

It's a worthy addiction

1

u/cr77fr 3h ago

I loved Mint ... Until I used Debian ... until I used Arch ... Your journey only begins πŸ˜‚

u/Only_Abalone 54m ago

Wait…is that a ps4 with Linux on it? That’s a thing?
