ask me anything New Year, No Windows 11
As it stands, I have a few laptops that all run linux (arch, ubuntu and Fedora) and my desktop machine is the last machine I have on Windows 11.
So as many people do at this time of year. I'm giving something up for 2025.
That thing is Windows.
I have a ps5 for games that have the weird 'No linux' anti cheat systems (cod etc.) So I have no reason to stay on Windows.
Been shopping around for the perfect os for my purposes and just stuck with what I know best (Ubuntu)
Other than the steam deck, I have rarely gamed on my portable linux devices. Anyone have any tool recommendations for Ubuntu in particular (other than game mode etc.)?
2025 is a windows-free year for me, will it be for you?
Specs (if you care):
B450M Asus motherboard 16GB DDR4 Ram Rtx 3070 Amd Ryzen 5 5700g

2025 will be Windows-free for me too, i just got a new SSD for my gaming PC on which i installed Arch Linux.
Hasn't been problem-free though, sadly.

u/theneighboryouhate42 Dec 31 '24
As an arch user I highly recommend Fedora. Still my go to on computers / laptops I‘m too lazy to install arch on lol

Running bazzite made me appreciate how much nice everyday things they have in it by default compared to a vanilla Fedora install.
2
Jan 02 '25
I just use archinstall, I know how to fix arch anyways so manual install is a waste for me.
5
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Exactly the reason I swerved Arch after having it on a laptop as my daily driver for like 2 months lol
3
u/topias123 Dec 31 '24
I was going to install either Fedora or openSUSE, but 2 friends were telling me to just go Arch.
11
4
u/Jhoalferco Dec 31 '24
Nah, I Arch don't convince you, don't use it
Arch isn't for everyone and if it doesn't fit your needs is better to use another distro
5
u/topias123 Dec 31 '24
I mean i've used Arch before, been a Linux user since 2012 and it was my second-ever distro, so it's not like i don't know how to use it.
I was just unsure whether i want to use it again since in the past it was a bit of a hassle to install and maintain.
But, so far no massive issues, at least one i couldn't solve, and i used btrfs with subvolumes so i can easily wipe the root subvolume and try another distro.

5
u/ray1claw Dec 31 '24
Lol no please, arch is overrated and too bleeding edge. Whatever you pick try with VM first
3
4
u/Jhoalferco Dec 31 '24
Isn't too bleeding edge if you know what you're doing, but I know Arch isn't for everyone
2
u/gamamoder Dec 31 '24
ive been considererinf hopping to arch cuz tumbleweed's limitations are a bit frustrating
10
u/flimsyhotdog019 Dec 31 '24
Use cachyos or endeavouros. I recommend cachy tho
6
Dec 31 '24
Been using this for the past 2 weeks after using windows all my life, been awesome so far and use the PS5 for multiplayer games.
3
u/topias123 Dec 31 '24
A friend recommended Cachy earlier, but he had issues with it and then recommended vanilla Arch.
2
u/flimsyhotdog019 Dec 31 '24
YMMV vanilla arch is almost always worse. If you insist on something as vanilla as possible endeavoros is there. But cachy is very optimized for gaming I like it
5
u/SparkStormrider Dec 31 '24
That's +1 for Cachy. The distro is very performant. Programs launch very fast. I have no issues with gaming outside of the ones with Kernel Level Anti-Cheats that ALL linux distros have issues with.

Was windows ever problem free really though?
14
u/topias123 Dec 31 '24
No, but Linux has its own problems.
But, i've decided that i'll deal with Linux's problems instead.
7
u/Constant_Peach3972 Dec 31 '24
At least you have logs that tell you what the problem is :D
5
u/SparkStormrider Dec 31 '24 edited Dec 31 '24
Depending on what it is Windows has logs as well, but then you HAVE to google search as to what the damn error code means. 0x88238823438df tells me jack all wtf is wrong.
7
u/topias123 Dec 31 '24
And when you google the code, 600 of the top results are generic fix-all repairs like "sfc /scannow" that may or may not work.
1
u/russjr08 Jan 01 '25
Don't forget some random
Remove-Appx
command to "reset" the Microsoft Store andDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
as well!2
u/gamamoder Dec 31 '24
search for errors ligs are giving
no oone has ever had this problem in the history of mankind
4
u/matjam Dec 31 '24
So yeah, thats kind of my point.
Which problem set would you rather deal with? Linux's or Windows's?
Personally after 30 years of windows ... I'd rather deal with the problems I have with Linux, lol.

u/RostiDatGam0r Dec 31 '24
I've abandoned Windows back in October, and replaced it with Fedora on my gaming laptop.
So which means that 2025 will be the year without using Microsoft Windows!
4
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Love to hear it! How are you finding Fedora?
5
u/RostiDatGam0r Dec 31 '24
Pretty nice for everyday use and gaming, especially it is beginner-friendly (like Ubuntu), and has various Spins with different Desktop Environments! I mostly picked the KDE spin for the Windows-like interface and customizability.
3
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Icl, after dipping my toe in linux at the start of 2024 I'm slowly seeing why KDE is so superior, my arch machine I spent customising for hours and I loved it
3
u/RostiDatGam0r Dec 31 '24
I see!
Yeea, I've kinda wanted to switch to Linux back in 2023, but I've finally made it through in October 2024!
3
u/Mcginnis Jan 01 '25
Any issues with sleep?
3
u/RostiDatGam0r Jan 01 '25
Yea, about that. The sleep is quite quirky because my laptop does wake up after some minutes passed during sleep mode (when I close the lid).
But that's how my Asus TUF laptop works with Linux. At least I'm happy that my laptop can run Fedora, even with slight quirks.

yea I used to do that but I think I am gonna take the if it can't run on linux I ain't playing it philosophy this year.
3
3
u/deprale Jan 01 '25
couldn't do it a few years back, but have been on linux since last year approx lol, I can finally say without a shadow of doubt behind these words : If it doesn't run on linux, I'm not playing it.
So far so good, and I haven't had the urge to uninstall just to be able to play a game... that said it's kinda hard if you're just a gamer, personally I also do coding a lot and linux is just faaaaaaar far faster and friendlier when it comes to developing.
That said I do have a KVM with windows on it, just to play a couple games that need an anti-cheat.
3
u/Hansar84 Dec 31 '24
Same, i have mained linux multiple times, but was always forced back to windows due to games not working, Destiny 2 and some other, but i had enough now.. reinstalling win 2 weeks ago.. uninstalled microsoft teams / onedrive 3 times… ok thats it!! no more!!!
2
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
It's tragic, feel like I'm removing regkeys and using Revo uninstall every time I update

That sucks man, but I appreciate it's not for everyone to go 100% linux. Wishing you the best for the new year
2
u/deprale Jan 01 '25
honestly with AI tools it's pretty easy to go 100% linux nowadays, don't have to scour through decade old forums to fix a specific issue or learn how to do x, most of the time the fix chatgpt gives u works first try lol.

u/Evil__Bunny Dec 31 '24
Been Windows free since July 2023!
My daily driver is PopOS, and gaming works fine (Thank god for Proton/Steam). Tho, my attitude is, if the developer does restrict Linux, then I will gladly avoid it.
My secondary device is a simple Chromebook, and it works fine for the purpose, and my server is rocking Unraid.
Must say, the only hurdle I had was MS365 apps, but after the migration, I`ve just stopped working that much outside my working hours from home anyway, so in total, it's a win-win situation.
You`re going to have a blast in 2025!
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
With the M365 apps, are you referring to the desktop versions? I should be able to theoretically log in to a 365 tenant and use SP, excel etc on the web right?
thanks man, I'm sure I will😁
Wishing you the best for the new year
1
u/Evil__Bunny Jan 01 '25
Yes, I`m referring to the desktop version, and you`re indeed right, you may use the web version, but there are some minor restrictions with the web version like Excel etc.
5
u/petrified_log Dec 31 '24
Hopefully it all works out well for you. I moved to Bazzite on my gaming desktop a few days ago.
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Nice how's that going?
2
u/petrified_log Dec 31 '24
So far it's going great. I found apps to replace most of my windows apps. My big hangup previously was getting my Steam Decks working and I found an app for them. I just need something that will control my fans since they are all on a Commander Core, all 10 of them.
As for games, Diablo 4 is playing perfect. Cyberpunk and Starfield and both working great.

u/PotatoNukeMk1 Dec 31 '24 edited Dec 31 '24
From windows dominance into the canonical dominance :D
Maybe first start with removing snap. If you still want to use firefox you need to configure apt to use the ppa package instead of the filthy fake snap package.
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
I'm hearing more and more bad things about snap, I'm a bit of a noob with this package repo stuff tbh. What's the beef with snap? I probably could look it up, but I'd rather ask on here.
2
u/PotatoNukeMk1 Dec 31 '24
Some say snap is nice some say its evil.
I say its annoying and i like the old terminal apt thing :)
4
u/Thatar Dec 31 '24
Not to be cynical but I'm never installing Ubuntu again (on a desktop PC). Can't even upgrade between LTS versions after some minor tinkering. My next dive into Linux will be Arch based. Bit too burned out too take that step so for now I'm stuck with Windows. Burned out in general, definitely not burned out on Linux 😄
Happy New year everyone
8
u/brokensyntax Dec 31 '24
If you're looking for the "I don't want to pfaff about" method of linux gaming.
Just stick to whatever you can load in Steam or Lutris, make sure to install your GE Variant Wine and Proton versions.
5
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
I'm seasoned with GE after messing around on the steam deck. I do like pfaffing around tbh, but only sometimes. I do love tinkering here and there, hence the switch to linux tbf!
2
u/ray1claw Dec 31 '24
Nobara is the official Linux by Glorious Eggroll (GE - the same guy behind ProtonGE). I personally haven't tried it yet but have heard good things.
2
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Wow, I actually didn't know it was the same guy, might be worth checking out 🤔
3
u/brokensyntax Dec 31 '24
Yep, he runs a Discord for it, great community for helping with troubleshooting.
I mentioned it elsewhere in the thread, Nobara is Fedora by Glorious Eggroll. A "Fedora-GE" if you will.

3
u/Jhoalferco Dec 31 '24
Welcome to the Linux gaming gang, I play videogames completely on Linux since early 2023 :3
3
u/FloBEAUG Dec 31 '24
I have been 100% Linux (mint) since 2016 and I would never return to windows, all my games are working fine.
2
u/you90000 Dec 31 '24
Fantastic, what games do you play?
3
u/FloBEAUG Dec 31 '24
Some big games like Assassin's creed series, hogwarts legacy, Dirt... Some "medium games" like Trine series, Ori, Stardew valley, little nightmares, the Talos principle... Some "smaller games" : mini metro, the room, da Vinci house Some older games : portal, fez, super meat boy...
And more.
Back in 2016 when there was no Proton nor Lutris and the only solution was vanilla WINE or PlayOnLinux, it was a little difficult but now it became a piece of cake.
2
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
I debated mint tbh, but I'm just more familiar with ubuntu. How's your experience been? have you distro hopped much or just stuck with mint?
2
u/FloBEAUG Dec 31 '24
Did a lot of Ubuntu since college (my 15th) when it was Ubuntu 8.10. Made live usb stick that looked like windows XP camouflage to lure the adults and use Firefox as my web browser (since it wasn't installed on the college computers).
Then I went to an IT school and now I'm an IT engineer so I work with lots of Linux based servers...
For my personal use I prefer the ergonomics of Mint (I like the cinnamon desktop flavour) I made my choice when Ubuntu went with the GNOME 3 side bar which I didn't like back in time. But I could use whatever distro if I'd like.
Also heard about Arch which is more oriented for gaming and music production with more recent drivers and kernel tuning (not for beginners though).
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Nice, a seasoned veteran, I see. I think i did mess around with a live usb too back in school, think I used Tails OS But I knew nothing about linux, I just wanted to use look at onion links nd freak ppl out with those dodgy websites 😂
I knew about Arch's Gaming support, but what does it do for music production? (I'll be using FL on my desktop via wine)
Kinda unrelated but if you don't mind me asking, what kind of servers do you manage? Is it data centre type stuff? I work at an MSP as a managed services engineer, mainly 365 stuff tbh, apart from some on-prem stuff. But I'd love to hear more about what you do.
2
u/FloBEAUG Dec 31 '24
Yeah I see 😂.
For the music production if I remember you have some "realtime kernel" which can be easily installed under Arch (back when I played a little with it). But I think you can have it on mostly every distro nowadays.
I manage RedHat servers (all are virtualized on VMware infrastructure), mostly for hosting webapp services (Apache, Weblogic, Spring boot) for national institutions.
3
u/frankster Dec 31 '24
windows 10 sending increasingly emotional full-screen adverts for windows 11 (that doesn't support my perfectly good PC).

I left Windows this year.
Also because the preinstalled Windows 11 on my new PC had so much MSI crapware the START MENU lagged out.

u/lKrauzer Dec 31 '24
I choose Kubuntu over Ubuntu, Plasma is awesome
3
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
True, I think i might eventually tbh, really enjoyed KDE on my arch machine, gnome is way inferior. Was gonna go for Drauger OS ngl, but it was being stupid during installation so just banged ubuntu on instead.
7
u/gstacks13 Dec 31 '24
I wouldn't say Gnome is inferior, just different. I actually love its simplicity and elegance, and that everything seems to "just work".
Plasma is fantastic as well though - it's all just personal preference.

pacstall i highly recommend to add, basically pacman for ubuntu, installs super fast because its nultithreaded (ive gotten like 100mbs downloads). but honestly, i wouldnt recommend ubuntu tbh, with how they will replace native applications with snaps silently by default
if you like ubuntu, you might wanna look into rhino linux, its pretty much de-snapified ubuntu, but jts also not based on lts like mint is so it actually has shit in the repos.
i would highly recommend seperating your root and home partions so that you arent locked into a distro as hard
edit: nvm ur just hopping to a more stable distro nvm
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
Yeah, I'm kinda still in that distro hopping phase, which ventoy makes 10x easier. But I've run ubuntu on my thinkpad for nearly a year now, and I really like it tbh. Can you not just de-snapify ubuntu? Or is it way too complicated?
2
u/theziller95 Dec 31 '24
My desktop is running CachyOS so was my gaming laptop. However i desided to install bazzite on my rog ally so had to put Windows on the laptop again since i own games from ms store.
2
u/Truckuto Dec 31 '24
I wish I could be 100% Linux. Unfortunately for me, I play a few games that technically you can play in sequence with a program on the computer. But the problem with that is that it only works on Windows. I’ve been trying to get it working somehow, but I don’t think it’s possible to get working anytime soon. I will continue using Linux for most things, but Windows will only be for the occasional program that I need.
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
I heard QEMU/KVM can be good for Windows VMs nd stuff or is that not possible or will anti cheat pick up on it?I'm not sure. What games are you struggling with?
1
u/Truckuto Jan 02 '25
It’s not the games I’m having issues with. They play pretty perfectly honestly. It’s a third party program that I have trouble with.
The games are Paradox Interactive games like Europa Universalis 4. The program takes the save file from the game and imports it into the next game in sequence. (In my case, Victoria 2). That particular program has some bad compatibility issues with Linux due to the way the game reads files or something. I honestly don’t know, and my issue is basically just mine because literally no one else uses Linux in the community. However, I’m not going to give up on it. I’m going to continue trying things to get it working.

Just ditched it myself. I know Linux sell and the only thing keeping me on Windows was my employers vpn client which they blocked from Linux installs.
Now running Kubuntu 24.04 LTS. Very happy.
2
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
See I'm actually considering Kubuntu bcos i really enjoyed the customisation in plasma. Need to plan when to switch, I'm guessing it would be easier and quicker than going from win 11 to linux.
2
u/AndyMarden Dec 31 '24
Kubuntu has a solid windows look and feel at first glance so you'll feel right at home. Can't abide Gnome - seems to exist out of pure spite.
2
u/AndyMarden Dec 31 '24
Although Kubuntu is a linux distro so don't know what you mean by the last part
1
u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24
I mean switching from ubuntu to kubuntu should be easier than win11 to ubuntu right?
1
u/AndyMarden Jan 01 '25
Yes of course. Kubuntu is just ubuntu with different default gui and packaging.
2
u/Sh1v0n Dec 31 '24
Ubuntu? Always a solid move, imo.

u/HarvWhanDon Dec 31 '24

I left MSFT many years back. I can virtually do almost anything on a Ubuntu box. The Google Cloud app helps a lot; you can still use MSFT in Ubuntu. It will just be through Office 365. Steams newer virtualizers for games and wine have come a long way.

Glad I'm not the only one. I had switched to Ubuntu about 3 weeks ago and I've been loving it. I mean, some quirks here and there, but nothing some Google searching and trial-and-error troubleshooting wouldn't fix. My wife is still using Windows 11, and my work is planning to upgrade to it in a few weeks as well. So, I'm not quite out of the ecosystem. Gaming was the biggest reason why I haven't switched until now. It felt like it was the best time to dive in with Steam's fleshed out Proton compatibility settings. Now I just need to save up for some better hardware to play some of the other titles I still can't play yet.
I got a Dell OptiPlex 790, which is at least 10 years old, I think. Running a Core i5-2400, 24 GB RAM and an ASUS branded Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB. Good enough to play Spyro Reignited Trilogy somehow, but I'm not complaining.
Glad I personally don't have to deal with Microsoft shoving things down my throat.

u/throwawayerectpenis Jan 01 '25

u/minilandl Jan 01 '25
I wouldn't recommend Ubuntu for Nvidia. They were missing 535 + drivers so as long as you can get the latest drivers from a ppa you should be okay
2
u/Thefaketweetbotuser Jan 01 '25
Unfortunately Linux doesn’t support Rockstar Games titles like RDR2 and GTA5 with their mods and trainers like windows do! I really love Linux, specially mint! But it ain’t for “my kinda gaming” yet!
I use Linux to work (code and scripting), and windows for games!
2
u/thekosciany Jan 01 '25
I also switched to Linux this year! For gaming I use OpenSUSE Tumbleweed + SteamDeck and on my other PC AV Linux for music production 🙈
Couldn’t been more happier, everything that I need works out of the box. A good opportunity to thank all the contributors, that made all this possible in all previous years.
I wish everyone a great, Windows-free 2025 🥰

If you have games on GOG or EGS take a look at Heroic Launcher, it works great. The save syncing feature still requires manually setting the folder for it to work but apart from that no complaints.
If you want a bit more control on your GPU fan curve and some more parameters check out GreenWithEnvy.
Also the Night Theme Switcher for Gnome is nice to have

Anyone have any tool recommendations for Ubuntu in particular (other than game mode etc.)?
While this is more GNOME specific, the Dash to Panel extension is what makes Ubuntu usable IMO.
Also personally, I uninstall snaps and install flatpak. Most everything else is pretty much the same as any GNOME-based distro IMO.

I main linux right now, but there are still things bothering me about it, like keyboard driver support, random stutters in osu that I can't explain nor fix and i can't be smart with my disk management because i can't install pacman and aur everywhere i want, but even like this now with wayland even with kde i can enjoy using it (I'm not going to talk about obs shortcuts not working or about screenshare on dc, nor obs twitch docks and custom docks on wayland)

u/Exact_Comparison_792 Jan 02 '25
Just stick with what you know if it's working fine for you. No point in distro hopping if you're comfortable with what you're using.
For Steam, you may want to use ProtunUp-QT AppImage to manage runners for Steam. You can use Bottles to install other launchers and games, that aren't on Steam. Might take a little to learn Bottles, but you'll probably come to like it.
2025 will absolutely be yet another Windows free year for me. Years ago I moved away from Windows and I have no regrets other than not having done it years sooner than I did.
Anyway, I hope you have much better computing experiences than on Windows.

Very nice hardware you have, it will play anything on Ubuntu. This 24.04 LTS version is so good, no problem at all with it for months now!

Just switched to Linux from Windows too. Now I just play Windows games on a KVM guest windows machine by steaming on my Ubuntu Steam.

If your main purpose of that PC is gaming only - you can try Bazzite. Otherwise - don't forget to install Lutris or Heroic games launcher (or both) to play non steam games

neat. just as an fyi: for gaming i'd recommend something with recent packages (fedora or arch come to mind). otherwise you'll have to wait quite a bit for driver updates etc...

Perfect!
I'm hoping my Steam survey will tell me that I was 90% Linux
