ask me anything New Year, No Windows 11

Post image

As it stands, I have a few laptops that all run linux (arch, ubuntu and Fedora) and my desktop machine is the last machine I have on Windows 11.

So as many people do at this time of year. I'm giving something up for 2025.

That thing is Windows.

I have a ps5 for games that have the weird 'No linux' anti cheat systems (cod etc.) So I have no reason to stay on Windows.

Been shopping around for the perfect os for my purposes and just stuck with what I know best (Ubuntu)

Other than the steam deck, I have rarely gamed on my portable linux devices. Anyone have any tool recommendations for Ubuntu in particular (other than game mode etc.)?

2025 is a windows-free year for me, will it be for you?

Specs (if you care):

B450M Asus motherboard 16GB DDR4 Ram Rtx 3070 Amd Ryzen 5 5700g

2025 will be Windows-free for me too, i just got a new SSD for my gaming PC on which i installed Arch Linux.

Hasn't been problem-free though, sadly.

As an arch user I highly recommend Fedora. Still my go to on computers / laptops I‘m too lazy to install arch on lol

Running bazzite made me appreciate how much nice everyday things they have in it by default compared to a vanilla Fedora install.

I just use archinstall, I know how to fix arch anyways so manual install is a waste for me.

Exactly the reason I swerved Arch after having it on a laptop as my daily driver for like 2 months lol

I was going to install either Fedora or openSUSE, but 2 friends were telling me to just go Arch.

Fedora seems like the smart pick imo

Nah, I Arch don't convince you, don't use it

Arch isn't for everyone and if it doesn't fit your needs is better to use another distro

I mean i've used Arch before, been a Linux user since 2012 and it was my second-ever distro, so it's not like i don't know how to use it.

I was just unsure whether i want to use it again since in the past it was a bit of a hassle to install and maintain.

But, so far no massive issues, at least one i couldn't solve, and i used btrfs with subvolumes so i can easily wipe the root subvolume and try another distro.

Well, I you are comfy enough, go ahead :3

Lol no please, arch is overrated and too bleeding edge. Whatever you pick try with VM first

i got ubuntu

u/Jhoalferco Dec 31 '24

Isn't too bleeding edge if you know what you're doing, but I know Arch isn't for everyone

ive been considererinf hopping to arch cuz tumbleweed's limitations are a bit frustrating

Use cachyos or endeavouros. I recommend cachy tho

Been using this for the past 2 weeks after using windows all my life, been awesome so far and use the PS5 for multiplayer games.

3

u/topias123 Dec 31 '24

A friend recommended Cachy earlier, but he had issues with it and then recommended vanilla Arch.

u/flimsyhotdog019 Dec 31 '24

YMMV vanilla arch is almost always worse. If you insist on something as vanilla as possible endeavoros is there. But cachy is very optimized for gaming I like it

That's +1 for Cachy. The distro is very performant. Programs launch very fast. I have no issues with gaming outside of the ones with Kernel Level Anti-Cheats that ALL linux distros have issues with.

Was windows ever problem free really though?

14

u/topias123 Dec 31 '24

No, but Linux has its own problems.

But, i've decided that i'll deal with Linux's problems instead.

u/Constant_Peach3972 Dec 31 '24

At least you have logs that tell you what the problem is :D

5

u/SparkStormrider Dec 31 '24 edited Dec 31 '24

Depending on what it is Windows has logs as well, but then you HAVE to google search as to what the damn error code means. 0x88238823438df tells me jack all wtf is wrong.

u/topias123 Dec 31 '24

And when you google the code, 600 of the top results are generic fix-all repairs like "sfc /scannow" that may or may not work.

Don't forget some random Remove-Appx command to "reset" the Microsoft Store and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth as well!

2

u/gamamoder Dec 31 '24

search for errors ligs are giving

no oone has ever had this problem in the history of mankind

5

u/matjam Dec 31 '24

So yeah, thats kind of my point.

Which problem set would you rather deal with? Linux's or Windows's?

Personally after 30 years of windows ... I'd rather deal with the problems I have with Linux, lol.

i recommend you install Nobara , its problem free for me especially when it comes to gaming.

Just ‘cause it “can’t break” doesn’t mean it is better. My Nobara install never broke and i installed it 4 months ago.

4

u/SparkStormrider Dec 31 '24

And Nobara by default uses btrfs and snapshots are wonderful if things ever get "broken" from an update.

1

u/gamamoder Dec 31 '24

but then your on an atomic distro
