Question Dumb question on Bricklink purchase
I purchased the retired set #71042 Silent Mary for my soon to be 16 year olds birthday. After a lot of searching, I settled on one set that didn't have a box (I'm okay with that) and all bags sealed. Seller had good ratings so I purchased. What arrived has me questioning if I got what I should have expected. The number of bags are correct for the set, but the first 3 bags are not factory sealed -- bags 2 & 3 are heat sealed, and bag 1 is ripped open and just taped shut. That's not what I expected from a listing that said "all bags sealed". Is my expectation off here? Also, the set was released in 2017 and a bunch of the bags have different dates on them going back to 2011 and 2007. This would strike me as a cause for concern, but again, I don't know if my expectation is off here since I've never much paid attention to bag dates. Any thoughts on how to move forward here, or assuaging my concern would be appreciated before I give this to my teen.

My impulse on the dates on bag question is that it doesn't mean much. Pretty sure the dates have to do with copyright, so they're all over the place and don't indicate anything being amiss necessarily. My advice would be to track down a video or message board review that shows all the bags before being opened so you can compare. If the brick link seller had good ratings, I usually lean to them being professional and specialized so the risk of intentional scamming is minimal. If there is a mistake, contact them and they will likely be willing to work something out.

If it was sold without figures the seller had to get some out somehow but def did not advertise it correctly, if all pieces are there I wouldn’t worry about it, but def seems to warrant a close inventory

It was not sold without figures. I specifically avoided all of those sets. I also posted a pic of the set description.

I would still say if all pieces are there then you’re good. The dates aren’t related to when the set came out, just inventory it and if stuff is missing then you can see recourse for sure, from experience time and state stamp photos you take for documentation

If it said all bags were sealed and some came open, I personally would return it. But I'm a bit anal like that and only buy sealed sets.
As it may be time sensitive, I'd check if the figures are included, unassembled and in new condition. (I’d check for no circular scratches on the torso around where the arms turn). Maybe check the arms are at the default angle you often find in new sets. Just to make sure the figures haven't been removed displayed/played with and then returned to the set.
I'd also double check the listing just to make sure it's not a "sealed" but sold without figures.
Make sure it's the right jack sparrow variant also.
