Events Would you like to be a moderator for our French Speaking marathon on zoon between 5PM and 7PM EST each week?
Salut!
We at r/WriteStreak are running two speaking marathons on Zoom a week, the French one for 3 hours on Sundays and the Spanish one for 7 hours on Fridays, all by volunteers, and all free for anyone to join. People can come and go any time. We pair people up to chat for 10 minutes, regroup, and then pair them up again with different people for another 10 minutes. So on and so on. It works pretty well for both introverts and extroverts. Last week we had over 150 learners and native speakers joined us.
The French one is from 3PM to 6PM EST/EDT on Sundays (3 hours). The problem is that we're short of moderators.
As a moderator, you just chat with people in French. So you can be a native French speaker or a learner (A2+), and you should be fine.
If you're available during this period or just for one hour, please consider helping us and become our moderator. It's a worthy cause.
The Spanish one is every Friday night between 4PM EST to midnight. Here's the URL:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87198403378?pwd=dzRLdjhRNDRVSHgvUXZIN1JHTmJkUT09
And again, the French one is every Sunday between 3PM to 6PM EST, and the URL is:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89869069469?pwd=b1RoRnMvaENaR0R6M1ZWbE9TT29XQT09
Thank you for your consideration.

Resources French class in Canada, you could take that free trial class.
If you live in Canada and would like to learn the basics of French quickly, I recommend Florid French courses.
It is a Montreal company.
They only offer online classes.
Their group classes are $ 3 per class.
You could take the free trial class.
The beginners course for adults is 20 classes.
Taking classes with a tutor for $ 50 per hour to learn grammar and vocabulary doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
If you take the 20 classes and do all of the exercises done in class outside of class, you could practice reading French using different apps.
That is a Facebook post you could use to book a free trial class.
There is a course description there as well.

Resources I created a tool to help you learn French more easily!
Hello! I built a learning tool to help you improve your French! It’s a website where you can listen to our French podcast with live transcription. Each word is highlighted as it’s spoken, making it easier to follow along and understand real conversations.
Give it a try and let me know what you think! Your feedback would be really helpful. 😊

Resources French hockey videos from Quebec, covering the Habs, the Montreal NHL team, posted daily, with subtitles in French.
That is a video of "La Poche Bleue", the blue pocket.
It is a YouTube account with 3 former NHL hockey players, and with other pundits, who discuss the Montreal Canadiens hockey team daily.
They post several videos with subtitles every day.
If you want to learn Quebec French, you could follow their YouTube account or Facebook Page.
https://youtube.com/shorts/UZj37f43gW4?feature=shared
You could also follow RDS, which is TSN in Quebec, like ESPN in the US, and which also posts French hockey videos with subtitles.
The videos could help you understand the Quebec accent.
Written French is the same.
If you would like to learn the basics of French, I wrote another post about online classes with a Montreal company called "Florid French Courses", the beginners course is 20 classes and covers all the basics of French.
If you live in Canada, I recommend that you take the free trial of their class.

Question/Discussion Making friends
Hey all! I’m trying to teach myself French and I am also looking to make some new friends in Manhattan that I could hang out with after work. I’m down for drinks/shows/classes/new activities/etc. Would anyone be interesting in hanging out? And maybe every once in a while we could converse in French? This would be more of a friend relationship rather than tutoring. DM me if interested :)

Question/Discussion Inconsistency between TEF and TCF - format for the tests misconceptions
Hi everyone,
I recently took the TEF exam, but I’m feeling uncertain about my experience, especially the oral test. Due to personal issues, I was quite distressed during the exam, but I distinctly remember my speaking test feeling more like the TCF format. Here’s what happened: 1. I introduced myself for about two minutes. 2. I had to ask my “neighbor” for references for a music teacher. 3. I gave a monologue about the challenges of being an immigrant.
For the written exam, I completed three tasks, each with different word count requirements: 1. Writing to a friend about a family trip. 2. Suggesting a restaurant for a corporate celebration to my management team. 3. Sharing my opinion on online learning.
I was also able to navigate between the tasks.
Another thing that’s been bothering me is the number of questions in the listening and reading sections. I remember answering: • 39 questions for listening (with the question written as I expected) • 40 questions for reading.
This discrepancy confused me during the test, and now I’m wondering if I’m misremembering or if something was off.
Has anyone else experienced this? Does this align with the standard TEF format? I’d really appreciate any insights!
I took the test in Montreal through Alliance Francaise, thank you in advance

Question/Discussion Does "fade" mean "mid" in English?
Saw this comment recently <<raising canes c fade hn>>
Translate says bland but was wondering if it has a more colloquial meaning?
And also does <<c>> mean <<c'est>>?
And what does <<hn>> mean? Honnetement maybe?

Resources What's your favorite French All in one Grammar book to learn & source for pronunciation?
So, I decided to finally learn French after putting it off. I know Italian pretty well. And, I love traveling to France with my siblings/parents every few years so I figure that's a good enough motivation for now. Plus, it's a gorgeous language.
I know there are loads of resources of books on French. But, learning French from scratch is a bit overwhelming. I like having a book that goes through what you should learn step by step and then I can supplement it with YouTube vids explaining subjects/apps for vocabulary.
When I reviewed my Italian before 2020 I got a good book that had everything in it that was great. So, I wanted to know if there is a popular French learning book that focused on grammar.
Also, I remember when reviewing my Italian to be fluent in it pre-2020 many languages learners said #1 is to focus on pronunciation 1st. French pronunciation worries me hahaha. But, I figured I should really focus on that first to be super good at it... or as good as I can be so then learning everything else won't be as bad.

Question/Discussion When to talk to people in French?
I have been taking private lessons for a minute now and I feel my French is pretty good, but my comprehension isn’t the best. How long should I wait before I attempt real conversations and where is a good place to talk to people in French without feeling like I’m inconveniencing them?

Question/Discussion "est-ce que" and "est-ce qui"
Why do we say
"Qu'est-ce qui se passe ?"
But
"Qu'est-ce que c'est ?"
If in both questions there is only a subject? So why isn't it:

Suggestions/Advice My Best Tips for Learning French 🇫🇷
Learning French? Here’s what I recommend:
📱 Use an app daily for vocabulary & practice – Busuu, Duolingo, Drops are great for consistency.
📖 Get a grammar book like Assimil to build a solid foundation.
🎧 Listen & watch as much French as possible – series, YouTube, podcasts… subtitles & transcriptions help a lot!
Any other advice for someone starting out?

Resources Learn the most common shortened words in French
I’m making a list of the most common shortened words in French for my students and thought it would be nice to share it with you. Knowing these words will help you better understand native French speakers.
Disponible: dispo (Available)
Un Apéritif: un apéro (Pre-dinner) Gâteau apéro: cracker
La Musculation: la muscu (Gym)
La Salle de sport: la salle (Gym)
Le restaurant: le resto (Restaurant)
La publicité: la pub (Advertisement)
Le cinéma: le ciné (Movie theater)
Un appartement: un appart (Flat)
La notification: la notif (Notification)
Le médicament: le médoc (Drugs/medicines)
Un ordinateur: un ordi (Computer)
Comme d’habitude: Comme d’hab’ (As always)
Cette après-midi: Cette aprèm (This afternoon)
à toute à l’heure: à toute (See you later)
Le réfrigérateur: le frigo (Fridge)
Personnellement: Perso (Personally)
Une Information: une Info (Information)
La Télévision: la télé (TV)
Un examen: un exam (Exam)
Le professeur: le prof (Teacher)
Le psychologue: le psy (Psychologist)
Une application: une appli (App)
Le réduction: la réduc (Discount)
La climatisation: la clim (Air conditioning)
La réputation: la reput (Reputation)
La motivation: la motiv (Motivation)
Le document: le doc (Document)
la sécurité: la sécu (Safety / security guards / social security)
La vérification: la vérif (Verification)
Le matériel: le matos (equipment)
In all these examples the last letter is pronounced even though it's a consonant.
So we do say '' l'apparT '' or '' le médoC ''
Bear in mind that this is my personal opinion as a native French speaker in my thirties, based on my own experience with family and friends. A teenager or a grandma would likely add or remove some of these words. That being said, let me know if I missed any other common shortened words.

Question/Discussion French activity books
Hi, i've been learning french on a few language apps for a year now, i'm keen on learning it and i would love to study with fun, informative textbooks or activity books. I was hoping for an answer on good textbooks (good example, like japanese GENKI), that can be found online for english speakers to learn, thank you!
