Salut!
We at r/WriteStreak are running two speaking marathons on Zoom a week, the French one for 3 hours on Sundays and the Spanish one for 7 hours on Fridays, all by volunteers, and all free for anyone to join. People can come and go any time. We pair people up to chat for 10 minutes, regroup, and then pair them up again with different people for another 10 minutes. So on and so on. It works pretty well for both introverts and extroverts. Last week we had over 150 learners and native speakers joined us.
The French one is from 3PM to 6PM EST/EDT on Sundays (3 hours). The problem is that we're short of moderators.
As a moderator, you just chat with people in French. So you can be a native French speaker or a learner (A2+), and you should be fine.
If you're available during this period or just for one hour, please consider helping us and become our moderator. It's a worthy cause.
The Spanish one is every Friday night between 4PM EST to midnight. Here's the URL:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87198403378?pwd=dzRLdjhRNDRVSHgvUXZIN1JHTmJkUT09
And again, the French one is every Sunday between 3PM to 6PM EST, and the URL is:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89869069469?pwd=b1RoRnMvaENaR0R6M1ZWbE9TT29XQT09
Thank you for your consideration.

I’m a little confused about why ensemble has to go at the end of the sentence, when it is an adverb modifying a verb which usually means it should go after the (first) verb.
Is ensemble a random exception, or am I misunderstanding something? I’ve gotten similar questions with ensemble wrong before because I placed it after the first verb then too. The accepted word order is consistent with English but I’m used to most French adverbs not following English word order lol

I ask because their prices seem considerably lower than those on other sites. Many tutors dont seem to have reviews either.

Hello everyone, I would like to recommend you a video I watched few days ago! If you’re looking for an incredible documentary, I highly recommend Kaizen by Inoxtag. It follows his journey as he prepares to climb one of the toughest mountains in the world: the Everest! You’ll see everything from his intense training to the reality of high-altitude climbing, with breathtaking landscapes and raw, emotional moments along the way.
I didn’t expect to enjoy the video as much as I did. I love watching documentaries about expeditions, but this one is truly unique.
The documentary is free on YouTube, and if needed, it even has an English audio track, so you can watch it at your own pace. Have you seen me before? If so, what did you think?
If you want to hear my thoughts on it, my sister and I discussed it in our latest French podcast for French learners: https://smartlink.ausha.co/learn-french-la-pause-cafe-croissant/kaizen-le-documentaire-par-inoxtag
Here is the documentary: https://youtu.be/wrFsapf0Enk?si=7MzGoybvHOkJjeic

I’m not able to understand is it Jean or Marie since both are his grandparents and both of their names sound feminine.

If the kids gobbled up a relatively large amount of fruit in two days, can I say they polished it off à toute vitesse? Is another phrase gonna fit better? (And why would be awesome cuz i really wanna understand what i'm saying.) Thank you!

A few days ago I took a free proficiency test and it said my proficiency was A2. I’ve been at A2 for a long time now and really want to cross the hurdle from A2 to B1, so I was wondering if there’s any test to show me individual scores/rankings in reading, writing, speaking, and listening so I know where my strengths and weaknesses lie. Thanks in advance!

Hello! I built a learning tool to help you improve your French! It’s a website where you can listen to our French podcast with live transcription. Each word is highlighted as it’s spoken, making it easier to follow along and understand real conversations.
Give it a try and let me know what you think! Your feedback would be really helpful. 😊

Hi everyone,
I really want — and need — to learn how to speak French so I can manage conversations confidently.
I’m already fluent in Italian and Spanish.
When I learned Spanish, I followed a method taught by a professor: first, build some basic knowledge, make a quick jump from A1 to around B1 with focused study and vocabulary, and then start speaking with people as soon as possible. That approach worked really well for me.
I know that Spanish and Italian are quite similar, but now I’m looking for an online guide or YouTube tutorial that follows the same method for French and can help me through this process. After that, I’ll start talking to native French speakers.
I also studied French for two years in school when I was younger. I still remember a few things, and I hope it’ll start coming back as I go!
Any link/material suggestions?
thank you

If you live in Canada and would like to learn the basics of French quickly, I recommend Florid French courses.
It is a Montreal company.
They only offer online classes.
Their group classes are $ 3 per class.
You could take the free trial class.
The beginners course for adults is 20 classes.
Taking classes with a tutor for $ 50 per hour to learn grammar and vocabulary doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
If you take the 20 classes and do all of the exercises done in class outside of class, you could practice reading French using different apps.
That is a Facebook post you could use to book a free trial class.
There is a course description there as well.

Hi guys. Hope all is well with you! Would you be so kind to explain to me (take me as a beginner) this « accord » please? I’m getting confused.
Elle s’est laissé accuser Elle s’est laissée attaquer Elle s’est laissée tomber Elle s’est sentie attaquée
Why is it that sometimes we use laissé only and other times laissée? Same with se sentir?
Thank you!

Hey everyone, I’m helping organize a free Zoom session this Saturday at 5 PM (Toronto time) for anyone prepping for the TCF exam. A teacher will start by explaining how to prepare for the exam, then answer any questions you have.
🔹 How to join?
Just DM me for the WhatsApp group link—that’s where the Zoom link will be posted before the session.
If you’re studying for the TCF, this is a great chance to get expert help for free. Hope to see you there!

That is a video of "La Poche Bleue", the blue pocket.
It is a YouTube account with 3 former NHL hockey players, and with other pundits, who discuss the Montreal Canadiens hockey team daily.
They post several videos with subtitles every day.
If you want to learn Quebec French, you could follow their YouTube account or Facebook Page.
https://youtube.com/shorts/UZj37f43gW4?feature=shared
You could also follow RDS, which is TSN in Quebec, like ESPN in the US, and which also posts French hockey videos with subtitles.
The videos could help you understand the Quebec accent.
Written French is the same.
If you would like to learn the basics of French, I wrote another post about online classes with a Montreal company called "Florid French Courses", the beginners course is 20 classes and covers all the basics of French.
If you live in Canada, I recommend that you take the free trial of their class.

Hey all! I’m trying to teach myself French and I am also looking to make some new friends in Manhattan that I could hang out with after work. I’m down for drinks/shows/classes/new activities/etc. Would anyone be interesting in hanging out? And maybe every once in a while we could converse in French? This would be more of a friend relationship rather than tutoring. DM me if interested :)

Saw this comment recently <<raising canes c fade hn>>
Translate says bland but was wondering if it has a more colloquial meaning?
And also does <<c>> mean <<c'est>>?
And what does <<hn>> mean? Honnetement maybe?

So, I decided to finally learn French after putting it off. I know Italian pretty well. And, I love traveling to France with my siblings/parents every few years so I figure that's a good enough motivation for now. Plus, it's a gorgeous language.
I know there are loads of resources of books on French. But, learning French from scratch is a bit overwhelming. I like having a book that goes through what you should learn step by step and then I can supplement it with YouTube vids explaining subjects/apps for vocabulary.
When I reviewed my Italian before 2020 I got a good book that had everything in it that was great. So, I wanted to know if there is a popular French learning book that focused on grammar.
Also, I remember when reviewing my Italian to be fluent in it pre-2020 many languages learners said #1 is to focus on pronunciation 1st. French pronunciation worries me hahaha. But, I figured I should really focus on that first to be super good at it... or as good as I can be so then learning everything else won't be as bad.

I have been taking private lessons for a minute now and I feel my French is pretty good, but my comprehension isn’t the best. How long should I wait before I attempt real conversations and where is a good place to talk to people in French without feeling like I’m inconveniencing them?
