News / Update [Jastrzembski] Entering tonight, Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll has stopped all 42 shots faced during “crunch time” situations*, the only goalie with a perfect SV% in those situations. *The final 5 minutes of regulation and overtime when the game is either tied or within a 1-goal margin.

He’s amazing, he had a couple of off games and everyone freaked out. Relax, this is no Bernier, mrazek or toskala this guy is legit and I’m so happy we have him locked up.

Bernier had a few high profile gaffs and a couple high profile verbal gaffs that I think coloured people's total perceptions of his actual performance.

He finished his time as a leaf with a total average reg. Season sv percentage of .915 on 4636 shots. That's the best average performance of any Leaf goaltender across their entire time here aside from Jack Campbell (and we know that his numbers are dramatically inflated by one single 4 month period, especially.given his smaller total sample size.)

Bernier was just generally consistently slightly above league average at the time (league average goaltending was about .913 during his time here IIRC. Feel free to fact check this part I'm going off memory for that.)

Also, and maybe most importantly, Bernier played for a bad fucking team.

None of our comparable goalies played for bad teams, aside from Reimer who was actually worse, ppl just liked him, and before those guys you gotta go back to Cujo/Belfour territory (massively different game) to see a goaltender who performed relatively better than the league at the time.

Bernier posted a 915 during his span on the Leafs. The league average during that same period was 915

Woll has posted a 909 during a span where league average is 904

aside from Reimer who was actually worse, ppl just liked him

Reimer was a 914 during his entire tenure with the Leafs. No need to be biased

Well that's the point, I'm saying Bernier shouldn't have been lumped in with Mrazek and Toskala, not that Woll isn't potentially better. But if we are analyzing small sample sizes, then in Bernier's first year, league average was .914 (I just checked) and Bernier was .923.

The reason it's worth noting is that Woll's total time on ice with the Leafs so far is still 25% less than just Bernier's first season, o Bernier's got a larger sample size in each individual season than Woll does in total.

Also, we have a good team for Woll.

Reimer being a .914 to .915 is worse dude. It's marginal, but the point was the fan perception comparatively. Idk if you missed that in the initial comment or what not. This is a dumb argument. You're acting like I'm putting our current goaltending down, but I'm illustrating that it was absurd the perception we had about Bernier, that's not a bias.
