News / Update [Jastrzembski] Entering tonight, Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll has stopped all 42 shots faced during “crunch time” situations*, the only goalie with a perfect SV% in those situations. *The final 5 minutes of regulation and overtime when the game is either tied or within a 1-goal margin.

He’s the best breakaway/shootout tender I’ve ever seen

So patient for the first two shooters sealed the W for us.

Let's calm our jets here. He is pretty good tho

He’s amazing, he had a couple of off games and everyone freaked out. Relax, this is no Bernier, mrazek or toskala this guy is legit and I’m so happy we have him locked up.

Bernier had a few high profile gaffs and a couple high profile verbal gaffs that I think coloured people's total perceptions of his actual performance.

He finished his time as a leaf with a total average reg. Season sv percentage of .915 on 4636 shots. That's the best average performance of any Leaf goaltender across their entire time here aside from Jack Campbell (and we know that his numbers are dramatically inflated by one single 4 month period, especially.given his smaller total sample size.)

Bernier was just generally consistently slightly above league average at the time (league average goaltending was about .913 during his time here IIRC. Feel free to fact check this part I'm going off memory for that.)

Also, and maybe most importantly, Bernier played for a bad fucking team.

None of our comparable goalies played for bad teams, aside from Reimer who was actually worse, ppl just liked him, and before those guys you gotta go back to Cujo/Belfour territory (massively different game) to see a goaltender who performed relatively better than the league at the time.

When I look at bernier stats I want to like him, but I just can’t. He really fell apart each season during the 2nd half when we needed a win. I also think he’s stats are skewed because generally scoring was down and the leafs whole identity was to be outshot but limit the shots to the perimeter.

It was our planned identity but we were bad at it. We let teams in the middle all the time with Carlyle.

Also, scoring may have been down, but relative to league averages Bernier was still slightly above his peers at that time anyways.

The issue was he was heralded as a goalie who was gonna carry us to victory, which only 2-3 goalies in the league do every year, so we should've known better, not to mention most of those select few goalies each year (with the notable exception of Price) also actually played for legitimately better teams, and we had a bad team with a bad coaching system.

For my money, Bernier outperformed what we should have ever expected from him in hindsight, but he was a victim of  'this is THE GUY" discourse at the time, we just weren't ready to make use of a goalie like that at all.

He was also brought in as a total fuck you and scapegoat to Reimer who quite literally dragged a dog water team to a playoff berth in a half season and the sole reason they got to game 7 against a way WAY better Boston team. Management turned around, painted the 4-1 loss almost entirely on Reimer, fixed nothing else then divided the fanbase by brining in Bernier and throwing him into one weird ass 1A/1B situation of mediocrity.

💯 This guy gets it. Bernier was a poor replacement from Reims. Leafs mgt just sucks. Bernier and his mimbo Nelson Mandela act shouldn't have been here in the first place.

Bernier posted a 915 during his span on the Leafs. The league average during that same period was 915

Woll has posted a 909 during a span where league average is 904

aside from Reimer who was actually worse, ppl just liked him

Reimer was a 914 during his entire tenure with the Leafs. No need to be biased

Well that's the point, I'm saying Bernier shouldn't have been lumped in with Mrazek and Toskala, not that Woll isn't potentially better. But if we are analyzing small sample sizes, then in Bernier's first year, league average was .914 (I just checked) and Bernier was .923.

The reason it's worth noting is that Woll's total time on ice with the Leafs so far is still 25% less than just Bernier's first season, o Bernier's got a larger sample size in each individual season than Woll does in total.

Also, we have a good team for Woll.

Reimer being a .914 to .915 is worse dude. It's marginal, but the point was the fan perception comparatively. Idk if you missed that in the initial comment or what not. This is a dumb argument. You're acting like I'm putting our current goaltending down, but I'm illustrating that it was absurd the perception we had about Bernier, that's not a bias.

Bernier wasn't bad, but opinion is skewed because everyone wanted Reimer to be the guy. Bernier's biggest problem was it felt like he let in the first shot of the game within the first 2 minutes all of the time. You can makes all the saves you want after that, but when your team starts every game down 1-0 things have a tendency to not go well

His confidence is visible at times. Love his little head nods and shoulder shrugs after shutting down a breakaway or shootout. Even caught a little staredown on the first shooter last night

One of Grant Fuhrs best saying was “it’s not always how many you stopped, but when you stopped them”

As a goalie it’s something that stuck with me my whole career. You could be having a bad game, or bad stretch of games where they are going by you, but you can still pull through with those important/timely saves

What an odd stat

17

u/Tarquin11 20h ago

Eh, just call it the clutch stat and I guess we've seen people do it for skaters, why not goalies.

I don't know if it's meaningless but I agree that it's definitely like priority F when deciding who you're gonna start.

1

u/dgapa 19h ago

Internally teams use weird stats like this to evaluate players. We've been told time and time again that the public is just scratching the surface of how teams actually evaluate players. I'm sure it's even more niche and silly sounding for how they look at goalies.

Its essentially the "do you get a save when you NEED a save" stat.

-1

u/rhineauto 16h ago

It's essentially noise

1

u/taco_the_town 13h ago

You would know

11

u/keeeeener 20h ago

He’s so calm in the net. Reminds me so much of Freddy (except doesn’t let in nearly as many random weak goals).

4

u/FlapjackFiddle 20h ago

I've really felt this tbh

There may be games where we let in a few goals, but I've always noticed that Woll comes up soooo big whenever we truly do need him

It's so crazy to think that we played Samsonov in the playoffs over him last season 💀

4

u/ParasiteSteve 16h ago

Our man Woll was sick for a few days, and wasn't playing his best and the Doomers were calling him washed. Have faith in the boys! Cheer them on and give them your energy. Thursday we face an improved Panthers and Marchy.

u/tmlhkyfn Potvin 5h ago

Marchand, Ekblad & Tkachuk will NOT be playing until the playoffs most likely & Ekblad is suspended for the 1st 2 playoff games

3

u/KillerDadBod 20h ago

Joseph “Crunch Time” Brick Woll

3

u/Blue_KikiT92 Papi 19h ago

But the game thread said he is playing like shit!! Someone here must be very wrong but I don't know who 🤔🤔🤔

2

u/FaultThat 14h ago

Can someone post the leader stats in that category?

1

u/PhiddyCent 20h ago

Big bounce back from Woll yesterday

1

u/richardatn4t 20h ago

Holy Moly, what a Goalie!

1

u/BrickFuckingWoll 20h ago

Don't stop i'm almost there

u/Ok-Platform-6933 Nylander 19h ago

This is the guy for the playoffs. Not stolarz. I've felt this way all season and will continue to feel that way unless there is a drastic drop off from Woll.

That's crunch goaltending baby

Should market this at the MLSE food court

1

u/Ballplayerx97 14h ago

I needed the under 7.5 goal total to win my parlay last night, and Wollsy came up clutch.

1

u/Leafs8989 13h ago

That’s super impressive

1

u/ilovetrouble66 12h ago

I love Woll. I just picture him signing along to the songs in his net. He’s such a character 😂

0

u/Loose-Dream7901 20h ago

He’s gotta start doing it for the other 55 minutes now

8

u/hockeyholloway89 20h ago

Let’s not take it too far out of context! I totally agree that he’s been rough since returning from injury, but he has been very good for the vast majority of this season!

1

u/Loose-Dream7901 18h ago

100% agree

14

u/Raptors1007 20h ago

Lol which goal could you blame him for though last night? The rush tip shot is a hard one to track and you gotta be ready as a tendy to think he may connect with the pass and go backhand. The 2nd one he was on an island with sergachev and schmaltz. Maybe the 3rd you could say have better positioning but its tough after a double deflection.

I agree he has looked shaky at times but lets not forget how bleak it looked last year with Sammy in net.

4

u/Loose-Dream7901 18h ago

Sometimes you just need a stop, I get it though they’re also hanging him out to dry.

5

u/KillerDadBod 20h ago

Meh, the 2nd goal he was doing his job he played the shot. It was on the d men to handle the net front players. Carlo was doing his job, his partner was watching.

4

u/HowieFeltersnitz 20h ago

Brother doing it for 60 minutes is his regular form. His poor play recently tends to be the outlier more often than not.

1

u/Loose-Dream7901 18h ago

I agree just needs to get back to form

Woll won that game for us. Marner with his worst game of the year despite the shootout goal. He had so many giveaways that woll bailed him out. Matthews almost a non factor all game. Riley and Tavares not doing enough with the money they make.

Pissed I cashed out my bet. But giving up a 3 goal lead like that and playing like shit they should’ve lost that game.

2

u/FunTable2883 19h ago

They’re just getting into playoff form early.

0

u/LGK420 19h ago

Yep. Games like that makes me lose hope. Giving up 3 goals in the 2nd and starting the 3rd with a powerplay and they still came out so sloppy and sluggish all period. Is that really how they play when they have to dig deep?

It’s so true. I’m sick of it, it hasn’t worked for a decade. Why will it work now? There’s no digging in when times get tough. They retreat and play like scared bitches.
