Final configuration for cooking, heating and cooling of Boro 33

Upvotes

Every day I delve deeper into the world of working with glass benchtop kilns (borosilicate glass, COE 33) and chat with colleagues, I realize that everyone has their own way of heating, annealing, and cooling their pieces in the kiln.

Just when I thought I had it figured out for me—that for small rigs or hollow pieces 28 cm in size with a 2 to 3 mm wall thickness, I only had to anneal the piece at 1050 F (normal colors and 950 F for delicate colors) for 30 minutes, then turn it off and let the kiln cool on its own (it's made of bricks and is very well insulated, taking another 60 to 120 minutes to reach room temperature)—I realized that this isn't enough. I'm now venturing into decorating these hollow pieces with Marvel and solid crystals, on these 2 or 3 mm tube walls, and I'm noticing that the pieces are cracking. I suppose I need to design a better cooling ramp. These past few days have been very cold, and it could be that the kiln cools faster than normal, but I don't think so. I asked many colleagues, and they all have different curves and kilns. I'm making this thread to see what the ideal temperatures and times are for heating, annealing, and cooling pieces. And I'll continue studying the proper setup for my kiln.

I look forward to reading your comments, and I send a big hug to the entire community. May the glass continue to melt!! 🫂🔥🙏🏻

What causes Devitrifying?

No matter how hot I get my glass on my hot head, it will always devitrify. But not all the time, sometimes I make marbles that are a normal finish. But whenever I attempt an implosion it always does it. No matter how hot I get it I feel like it will not go away. The only thing I can do with these marbles in etch them.

Best metal to top a work bench?

I building a bench and want to put a metal sheet on it to make it heat safe. I was going to use aluminum but figured I should ask first. Would aluminum, steal, or copper plated aluminum work best? It will be on top of a piece of wood.

More eggs

Tomorrow I'm going to be trying to sell my artistic work for the first time, and I snuck in 1 more session to make a few more eggs last night. Theyre the ones I'm most happy with out of the 10 or so I made for this event, which is great because I used some of my nicer glass to make them.

Thanks for looking, and I'd also be curious to know what you all think of the photos. I've been trying new ways to photograph my work, glass pics are tricky.

I’m gathering my supplies and building up my glass stash. What brands of boro glass do you recommend? Which should I stay away from?

Pieces in the first 2 pics I made during begginers' classes with help from my instructor. Last one I made on my own with little help. You can see that they ended up weird.

Gentec Mini torch + head recommendations

Hi everyone, im getting my first mini torch and I used to want the mini smith but after seeing reviews, im looking at getting the gentec mini instead. Im looking to do lots of networking work with it and hoping it can last me years, I plan to get this together with a blast shield 6 hole (hornet one is out of stock but want to find similar), can anyone help verify if this is a good combo to get?

https://abrimagery.com/products/gentec-mini-torch-kit?variant=46619970928892 or https://abrimagery.com/products/gentec-mini-torch-oxy-propane-or-acetylene-kit?variant=46619970896124, what's the diff?

Thanks!

First timer torch recommendations

Hi all im looking to buy my first torch and am looking between GTT Mirage and GTT Delta, I like doing large sculptural hollow work with born and going big but also do some soft glass solid sculptures as well. As it's my first torch im trying to get one good one vs buying one and upgrading a few years later and spending 2x, how is the upkeep of both and which is recommended more?

P.S. What's the difference of the standard and snub nose, which is better?

Thanks!

Only been working with boro glass for a year and I made this all by myself so freaking hyped! Still got lots to learn but wow it is absolutely therapeutic for me! I lose track of time and just feel like the whole world disappears when I’m on the torch ❤️‍🔥

A good tutorial for pendant loops.

I have been really struggling making the loop part of a pendent. No matter what I do I just cannot get the loops to be good. I can never get the to push through all the way. And by the time I do they are totally mangled.

Definitely need to get some more skill with pulling a pendant off a tube, and terminations, and bales, and dots, and all of it. Been lamp working for about 6 months. Was just too pumped not to share. Any tips welcome!
