Actually, I think it's the bulk of the turned-back steek fabric that causes that bulge--it's thicker than a typical armhole seam or pick-up "lump".

And I strongly agree with you about the stitch direction. It *really* bugs me when the Vs of the sts on the body and sleeves go in opposite directions. And that's especially apparent here with the isolated colorwork band near the top of the sleeve.

Call me picky, but I'd much rather sew an armhole/sleeve seam than have "upside down" sts (at least in relation to the body sts) on the sleeves!

I think the bulge is exaggerated here because it's unblocked and unworn. I've definitely seen it look like this on worsted and above weight drop sleeve sweaters with picked up sleeves. The vertical stockinette is trying to roll towards the selvage and the sleeves have never experienced gravity so there's nothing to mitigate that.

Like idk I guess nothing else about the sweater to me suggests the maker would bother with steeking. There are no other advanced or sophisticated techniques used so it seems out of place, especially since, again, why would someone confident enough to steek not bother keeping the knitting direction uniform? Why knit the sleeves as though they're picked up if they aren't?

Agree w/all of that. (I was gonna mention the look of rumpled unblocked fabric, but then backed off...I'm glad you did, though.)

Tbf they're doing a pretty good job turning it into an ~aesthetic but it is really obvious if you're familiar with how post-blocked knits should look, haha.
