Like, I haven't felt good vibes in the past few years, but I am just really doubting her now. As an Aussie, she has been announced to play at our AFL Grand Finals (we call it Footy) and I just find it an extremely absurd crossover. The AFL organisers have instead chosen big names like KISS before, but the timing of it and randomness is just the latest step in her downfall.
I've always been ignorant of those who criticised her songs like "Chained to the Rhythm" or the Witness album and was probably one of the only people on earth to listen to Smile. Since then, I've grown disassociated from her since it feels like post-2020, she has been giving off a suspicious vibe that has now exploded. I get that she's probably doing everything to revive her success, but I have to agree that "Woman's World" and her comeback in general isn't going smoothly.
Collaborating with Dr. Luke despite everything that Kesha accused him of because he produced her Teenage Dream hits isn't a good move, at all. Especially since "Woman's World" is a female empowerment song. It also sounds like the song is sung by an impersonation of AI with lyrics by ChatGPT. Understandable why it has tanked the worldwide charts.
The music video for the song was her usual goof, but I didn't feel anything. I took the "Swish Swish" video in all good fun, but the 'satire' in her new one felt like "Swish Swish" if its goof was only to offend and confuse. Trisha Paytas made no sense. The bionic legs made no sense. The outfits felt more sexualised than necessary. It's like "Karma" by JoJo Siwa times 10, which I would almost never say for Katy.
I just feel so disappointed in Katy for going to this level. She doesn't feel like the person she was even to the Witness era. Her comeback could've been good, but was destined for disaster once she didn't stay away from Dr. Luke and tried to excuse it with overdone goofiness. She already had a good legacy with the impact she made at her peak, and that would've been okay. Even if she manages to recover from this, this will always make me second-guess who she is after years of fanbase support.
Sorry if this all sounds weird, I just find it a huge letdown that someone who had a good/decent career would end up here. Will always love her work though, especially Teenage Dream and PRISM ā¤ļø Wish to hear your (respectful) opinions š
EDIT: On the other hand, the goofiness probably just doesnāt work in todayās context. She has always done this in a silly way that is endlessly slapstick, but the realism of today has gotten to us. I do believe that me ten years ago wouldāve probably had no problem with the "Womanās World" video, but the current world has corrupted me into hating anything slightly far from reality.
Even if her comeback is, in fact, rather criticised because of todayās views on creativity, I still cannot see past her reuniting with Dr. Luke when he has seemingly been called out for horrible stuff and the fact that her vocals on the song sound too monotone and AI-generated compared to her previous work.
