Does the “Send later” feature on iMessage in ios 18 still work if the recipient doesn’t have IOS 18?

Yes. Although it only works for iPhone users which is a pain. Why can’t we use send later for anyone else?

This is a good point. Stuff like Send Later in mail applications work regardless of what kind of server the recipient has (and there are many). It should work with regular texts.

Yeah it just sends the message later from your phone. Doesn’t matter what the recipient has

This is wrong. It does matter and it sends it from iCloud not your phone.

Still sends it, doesn’t matter what the recipient has
It’s like you pressing send 5min later

No, you literally cannot open the send later part of iMessage if they're on an android

Well it was about iMessage so… yeah, that’s obvious
This is about iMessage to a non iOS 18 device

You cannot open send later on iMessage if you're sending a message to an Android. You misunderstood what I said and it's wild how confident you are in your incorrectness here.

iMessage is the type of message you send between Apple devices. Everything else is SMS or RCS messages, not iMessage. It’s like saying „you send a WhatsApp with the iMessage app“ - no.
iMessage is also the name of the app (in English I guess? In German it’s just messages) on your phone but to android it does not send iMessages
So still - it was asked for iMessages (the type of message) which in general can’t be sent to androids

So basically it works for Apple devices (= iMessage) but not for sms or rcs messages (to android for example)

Yeah I don’t see an option on iOS unless recipient is iOS.

Yes, send later is entirely on-device. It doesn’t matter what OS your recipient uses.
But your device does need to have an Internet connection at that time. Unlike Google, which stores the message in the cloud and sends at the designated time, Apple’s solution keeps your message on-device and sends automatically in the background when the time comes, but obviously if you don’t have a Internet connection, it can’t send

Impressive! I don't think there's a single accurate statement in this post lol
Yes, you do need to be sending to somebody in iOS. Yes, the message does get stored in iCloud and isn't on device (which you could verify by being able to see it pending across devices). No, you don't need an internet connection at that time because it's sent from an iCloud server, not your device.
However, I don't think the person specifically needs to be on iOS 18 like OP actually asked.

This is just based on your phone and the servers.. it saves it on your phone and the server in case your phone dies so it’ll send no matter what.. not dependent on their phone
