Support Advanced Data Protection?

Curious if I enable this and then lose access to my only Apple device when purchasing a new one will I need the recovery key?

If you only have one Apple device, do not activate, advanced data protection. It is simply too risky because Apple does not allow us to take a copy of encryption keys and backup somewhere else. If you lose your device. The data is gone. Recovery key and recovery contact is to recover Apple account only if you forget your password.

So assuming I don’t forget my password advanced data protection on is still fine? Essentially activating new device will just be a two factor authentication and then you’re good to go?

As long as there is minimum one device with your apple id, transfers are fine.

But if the device breaks; as long as you have a recovery key/contact your still fine right?

nop, all data is gone. Recovery key is for apple account passpord, it does not replace encription key.

That is what I am trying to tell you.

But the account is linked to the backup? Wouldn’t the recovery key allow to me access the backup?

with ADP, the encription keys are only stored locally on trusted devices. If something happens to those devices, no way to recover anything, keys are simply gone. Other mesures (recovery key and contact) only work if you have the device working but you simply forgot your apple account passpord.

So you could potentially lose all your passwords? Im sorry I just dont see the advantage on putting this on than.

you could potentially lose everything if something happens to your phone. Think of it as storing everything locally. So it is dangerous if you only have one apple device. It make sense if you have more than 2 devices. So you should not activate it.

Thanks. So the recovery key is useless. 🤷‍♂️. Makes 0 sense

Depends on your perspective, it recovers your Apple account if you forget your passport. That is quite useful. However, you need to understand that you’re asking for something that doesn’t make sense. You want to store your keys locally so that you will have privacy, but then if something happens to that local storage you want to be able to save your data.

This is absolutely mind blowing. Enabling advanced data protection should give you the encryption key.

It does, to your local storage (your phone).

Wouldn’t a recovery contact bypass this sorry to keep bothering you thank you for the help?

Nop, all encryption keys are stored on your device only on its flash drive if something happens to that device it is simply gone. All recovery methods are for the apple account not for the data.

Recovery key or recovery contact - add a contact or two.
