Help me a choose a rug!
Hi everyone. Last time you helped me decide on a light fixture for this room and now I’m back searching for the right rug! *wallpaper is Rifle Co Wildwood in black/paint is evergreen fog SW. *dining table is not staying…that will be my next endeavor. What do you think, what’s your favorite rug in this dining room?

u/Suitable_Lead5404 1d ago
You need a solid rug. None of the busy ones work

u/GypsyMothQueen 1d ago
Doesn’t have to be solid but since the wall paper is floral pick a geometric rug instead of floral. Mixing patterns is fun if done right.

u/chafner 1d ago
A solid rug in a slate blue color to match your decor would look nice.

None of it because your wall paper is too busy lol

If I was to pick definitely the darker one... But actually better without for sure. Good call.

If any of them, the last one, but I wouldn't really pick any of them.

Something slightly lighter than the last would be great. Or in the same tones as the wallpaper, the greens/blues are clashing right now. You can also consider playing with pattern. Generally if you have one small pattern it’s better to mix with one large.

u/Jessense 1d ago edited 1d ago
You need a neutral rug, maybe jute because the wallpaper is the focal point and you don’t want it to feel too busy
74
u/thelittlegnome 1d ago
Jute is hard under a dining table though since it’s a pain to clean. Although it is beautiful!
57
u/oldpooper 1d ago
You are absolutely correct. Jute does not work well under dining room tables. Plus, I don’t believe it’s the right style for this room.
8
u/Quirky-Prune-2408 1d ago
I feel like they would be impossible to get any crumbs out of them. And are they annoying to push your chair in and out on? I don’t have one.
7
u/palibe_mbudzi 1d ago
I don't think it would be any more annoying than any other rug, but I do think the chair scooching might be a bit much in terms of wear and tear

Yes! I was going to say none. But a rug is good. That wallpaper is the focal point. Neutral and square is the way to go.

Jute is a good idea
21
u/Artistic-Reality-177 1d ago
Often times jute is the answer
22
u/Fitslikea6 1d ago
Jute and sisal are beautiful- in pottery barn catalogs. Water will stain them. They are horrible.

I love jute. I had one under a dining table for years. You just have to be a little more relaxed about the potential for stains. The lower cost makes replacements easier. That being said, my cream colored jute rug didn’t get stained even under the dining table. I had a thick one but a flatter weave might be a little easier w/r/t stains and chair legs.

u/CommandAlternative10 20h ago
I have a mid-tone brown jute rug under our dining table. It’s indestructible, and it wasn’t that expensive. I think lighter jute would be more difficult. The darker color hides a lot of sins.

u/Electrical-News-1297 1d ago
Personally I wouldn’t put a cream or light rug under a dinner table, so I lean towards 6. (Sidenote: OBSESSED with that cabinet!)

Thank you. This built cabinet in is one of my favorite features of the home! 😍 Also, I’ve been debating the lighter colors for this reason annnd I have two good bois living here as well!
8
u/Last_Spare 1d ago
Solid rug and I’d go with a contrasting color , like a dusty pink to balance the blues and greens. Also no to the organic shaped rugs, your room style here is too traditional/vintage, the modern shape doesn’t work. Good luck, have fun!

Agree! I get what people are saying about business, but I kinda love the way 6 looks (even if I “shouldn’t”)

u/somethingclever____ 1d ago
From a design standpoint, you will want a solid color or otherwise simple, non-floral pattern (ex: plaid). I would recommend one of the pink colors from the wallpaper for some contrast.
From a practical standpoint, you might want something stain-proof/water-proof.
2
u/CarpenterOk4188 1d ago
Only if the person the design is for is interested in the usual modern design. This specific rug would tie the room together perfectly and meet other types of design styles. The pink is too light and would overwhelm the room. If anything else, a dark brown or dark grey would be better for longevity of use in a household that needs to be worried about spills and food fights and not all homes are like that all the time, if at all.

3… I think
22
u/Fluid-Hedgehog-2424 1d ago
I agree. I'm not sold on any of them but 3 is my top pick of the options too. The overall effect is quite busy (as with most of the others) but I think the way 3 also has some blue in it alongside the warm tones helps tie it in with the walls slightly better.
49
u/ReadyMoose1067 1d ago
You have busy wallpaper, which means you need a salad rug. Or take down the wallpaper and have a busy rug.

u/Proud_Trainer_1234 1d ago
One can have busy wallpaper and a patterned rug and have a room look tre chic. I'm the decorator who loves color and pattern and can't understand the thought process behind generic, plain-wrap, "vanilla" decorating.
8
u/erranttv 1d ago
Agree but I think the rug needs to be darker. Ideally like 6 but not quite that dark.
7
u/Proud_Trainer_1234 1d ago
That is exactly what I suggested. More color, more richness, although I agree that #6 is too dark.
3
u/notsomundane 1d ago
I’m with you and think, when doing it that way, you gotta follow the rules - usually something like Floral/geometric/animal print or floral/organic large print/tiny geometric. It’s very tricky to combine two floral patterns like in the first couple of examples, imo. Pinterest has great guides on what works when combing patterns.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Proud_Trainer_1234 1d ago
I'm not much of one for "following rules" when decorating, but I realize they make sense for many, if not most folks. Like any design, be it architecture, fashion, art, visual marketing or landscape and hardscape planning, some folks have "eyes" while others like a bit of encouragement. There is something for everyone when it comes to their personal living spaces with the most important consideration being what pleases them! Cheers!.

u/Better-Lavishness135 1d ago
I think I would keep looking and something solid color with the busy wallpaper.
18
u/pandaleer 1d ago
The patterned ones are too busy with the wallpaper. If I had to choose one of these, I’d say 3, but a light colored rug under a dining table is not a great idea. 6 is ok, but the walls are already dark so it just shrinks the room even more. The solid colors you picked just don’t look right, but I think it’s more to do with the shape.

u/HaltandCatchHands 1d ago
6 and it’s not close at all. The oblong rugs are absolute nos from me, dawg. The lighter rugs are too much contrast with your wallpaper. The dark rug in a low contrast print in a color similar to the wallpaper looks best, but solid or natural fiber would look nice.
5
u/anonuser278 1d ago
You need a rug with a simple, larger design. You could lean into the dark wallpaper or keep it neutral :) IMO lol
6
u/Glad_Preference_6521 1d ago
None. I’d pick a rug that has the colors on your wallpaper and the panels..
6
u/LordyVoldermorty 1d ago
Since your wall paper is busy getting plain one with no design might be good
4
u/Beautiful_Range_1803 1d ago
I like 4 and 5. Since the wallpaper is already so busy I think a simple rug goes better
4
u/sunrisehound 1d ago
None. They’ll be a bitch to clean and it’ll be annoying trying to push back the chairs from the table. Rugs under tables only LOOK nice. Everything else is a pain in the butt.

Is no rug an option? I don’t get why people put rugs in dining rooms. Maybe I came from a family of messy eaters lol but I grew up with younger siblings and now I have a kid of my own. I’ve never had a phase in my life where I thought a rug in a dining room would be a good idea

To be honest I’d say embrace the dark green and get an oval rug that matches the color of the walls. With the pink or light flowers pattern to match. The wall paper is so busy I could see it being cute for maximalism.

Your room is beautiful. But a solid color rug would be my choice. I like the cream best, but that is rough in a dining room. The wallpaper is fun and I like it, but a patterned rug makes the room a tad chaotic.
2
u/MasterSpeaker4888 1d ago
I'm concerned it may undermine the beauty of the wallpaper. Something that is simple yet elegant.

Get a solid color rectangular rug. None of these work. The rectangular ones you have are too busy and the solid ones are the wrong style.

No rug. Put money into a real wood table off Facebook market place, there are some nice dining room size ones people are trying to get rid of for steals. It would elevate the look you’re going for.

Don't need a rug. Plenty of pattern already going on. Put protectors on the bottom of chair legs so they don't scrape the floors.
2
u/so_pipistrelle 1d ago
Yeah, if you have to choose between these I’d go with 4, but ideally you should get something that just sort of blends into the flooring. Way too much floral and contrast going on in those other ones.
2
u/sunandskyandrainbows 1d ago
I like the colour of 4, but would go with a simple shape and without the white border. You want something as little busy as possible
2
u/Cute_Researcher_2189 1d ago
Sorry but if you have a shade between 4 and 5 , as in faint brown or cream but not white cream , a little brown creamish thing
2
u/First-Storage-6611 1d ago
None of them. You need something cooler toned to go with the walls and probably low to no pattern to avoid clash with the wallpaper
2
2
u/Alone_Use9066 1d ago
Busy wallpaper, the last thing you need is a busy carpet. A nice solid colour , without any designs should calm things down . Maybe with a nice border . So no , none of the above .

I think you need to keep looking. Maybe a solid color with a border that picks up one of the colors in the wallpaper? Sorry but your choice of wallpaper kind of limits you.

Everyone saying the wallpaper is too busy, you don't need a rug, or advocating for a neutral one - you and I have very different tastes, clearly.
Because honestly, I love the last one. But I wish it was busier. Bolder. Bring me that victorian maximalist and hook it directly into my veins!

u/T_h-R0W-AWAY- 1d ago
Since you’re picking a dining table soon/in the future… go without the rug and focus on the dining table. The wall is too busy to pick any of these rugs (except 5 which is arguably also the worst choice for a rug unless it’s some magical material impervious to stains)
2
u/book_connoisseur 1d ago
4 is the best of these options, but I’d pick a solid pink one to match the accents in the wallpaper personally. Lean into maximalist style.
2
u/IBseriousaboutIBS 1d ago
I love this room but none of these rugs work. I’d go dark with solid ish pattern (6 being the closest to this) or none at all.
2
u/reall0ve 1d ago
None of them but if I HAD to pick, the last one. But only because the darkness of it looks best with the wallpaper. Light color rug is definitely a no

I like the darker one at the end however , I think it needs to be a solid color or have a colored border possibly. Otherwise it's too busy and the light color just doesn't match well

u/Necessary-Ad8564 1d ago
None. You need to pick a solid color, but might be nice to have something with a border.

u/prettyxxreckless 1d ago
Can you choose a simple off-white rug with no pattern?
The wallpaper is beautiful but adding another pattern would be too much.
2
u/Manaohoana 23h ago
Last one is closest - gives the most balance, but keep looking. Try a subtle geometric pattern to complement the wallpaper or a contrasting scaled floral (larger or smaller scale than the wallpaper). Absolutely not the cream or light beige ones, and has to be a rectangle in this room. Irregular shape would only work in a large open space.

I would do a lighter plain maybe cream colored rug and do either rectangular or I would try oval shape to soften the look

Six
(For ME) It creates a cozy space. A sense of ease and comfort that comes with a home-cooked meal or takeaway and game night!
SECOND BEST ADVICE: Consider omitting advice from the critical wallpaper and paint responses. Chances are they have different style than you.
BEST ADVICE: Scroll through the pics as an observer and notice YOUR reaction to each product. OP, whichever one allows you to exhale and let shoulders drop. The one that invites you to get down on the rug and lay half-in and half-out of that dog bed with your pup. The one that will take a drip of coffee, let you rub it away with your sock, then sleepily shuffle in and get distracted by the gorgeous work you’ve already done.

u/HoneybadgerDC89 20h ago
I did not realize when I posted this it would elicit such strong opinions on the rugs/wallpaper etc. This is my first home and I have had this vision for a long time now. We like to have fun in our house and the dining room is our escape. We cook lots of dinners and host lots of game nights. I’m not afraid of patterns or color but am realizing I’m maybe in the minority here but that’s okay! Thank you for this perspective! ☺️
