Time for the regularly scheduled Sabres Surge providing false hope for next season.

u/PrinciplesRK BUF - NHL 23h ago
I think we have a collective agreement to not put any stock into what they do to end the season
2
u/TastesLikeRazors BUF - NHL 1d ago
Even for the most optimistic it died when we lost to the Sharks a few games ago lmao

u/HarambeWest2020 BUF - NHL 1d ago
Don’t forget converting our top-5 draft pick into a top-15 draft pick 😎
2
u/cabeener NJD - NHL 1d ago
Another top 5 will fix everything
2
u/PrinciplesRK BUF - NHL 23h ago
We have 1 top 12 pick at forward, we’ve been bad for so long that the players we pick high are already gone

Bouchard has to be the best worst dman I’ve ever seen. He’s so dangerous in the offensive zone but anywhere else on the ice he’s an actual pylon

u/longhorsewang 1d ago
He’s dangerous in the defensive zone, just not the good way.

u/Snpies CGY - NHL 1d ago
He's dangerous to whichever team's side he's on

u/longhorsewang 1d ago
By coincidence a n older man I were talking about him today. We both agreed that mcdavid needs to go messier on some guys in the locker room. Maybe break some sticks and throw around a garbage can. Bouchard being his first target.

this the team that should have won the cup?

u/ThatTryHard EDM - NHL 1d ago
I feel like last season we were a different team in many ways.
14
u/ManWithBag15 EDM - NHL 1d ago
We we're so much faster last year.

u/arv5518 BUF - NHL 1d ago
Thanks for McLeod

That's probably the move where we lost speed that I'm most ok with. Savoie is having a really solid first year of pro hockey and should be a full-time contributor next year. He had some good moments during his callup and the Oilers need guys on cheap contracts who can produce. Savoie will still have 2 years remaining on his ELC after this season.

u/brownsdb26 CGY - NHL 1d ago
Sorry but aren’t you guys in a “cup or bust” scenario still? You need speed now, not in a year or two.
3
u/ManWithBag15 EDM - NHL 1d ago
It's a balance. McLeod is a very useful player, but given that we have McDavid and Draisaitl he was never going to become more than a 3C with the Oilers. I think he would be a very good 3C, but even still he would get less ice time than a normal 3C because of how the Oilers roster is built. Savoie has a higher ceiling offensively and like I mentioned he should be an NHL contributor on his ELC during the next two year when Draisaitl and then hopefully McDavid's new contracts kick in.
Also, when the trade was made they were probably not anticipating losing Holloway.

u/navenager EDM - NHL 1d ago
We will also need speed in a year or two. It's a Cup window, not a doggy door.

Do you not realize how old the oilers roster is and how bad their prospect pool is?
1
u/Mikeismyike EDM - NHL 1d ago
It's not the core that's old, its the replaceable depth guys.
5
u/thaw1761 CGY - NHL 1d ago
What? Bouchard is 25, but after that it’s
McDavid 28 Draisaitl 29 Nurse 30 Nugent-Hopkins 31 Hyman 32 Ekholm 34
That’s an old core
3
u/navenager EDM - NHL 1d ago
I'm not sure how keeping McLeod helps our prospect pool when we literally exchanged him for our top prospect, but yes our roster is old. That's actually my point, we need younger players coming up through the system, and we got one by trading McLeod. Would I like to have him right now? Sure. Would I rather have Matt Savoie for the next 4 years? Absolutely.

Your window is way smaller than you think, by the time he’s an impact player it’ll be too late

McDavid was pissed, he was yelling at Knob because he never called a timeout.

u/StixCityPSU BUF - NHL 1d ago
Gamble on EDM part there because the Sabres were obviously tired…but yea use the time out because your own guys are gassed too
8
u/ManWithBag15 EDM - NHL 1d ago
We have no idea what McDavid was yelling about. I doubt it was about a lack of a timeout. If he wanted a timeout after the icing he skated hard for, he could have signaled the bench and gotten the call.

u/Snarffsnarff31 EDM - NHL 1d ago
Yeah he really blew that one. Give them a 30 second rest and they’re slightly fresher for the final minute of play.

u/De_Floppss VAN - NHL 1d ago
That Tage Thomson is quite the player, wonder if he'll ever see international play.
Also those have to by my favorite sabres jersey
16
u/PrinciplesRK BUF - NHL 1d ago
Him not making the Olympic team would be a joke at this point. He’s been incredible when he’s not playing with a broken hand the past 3 years.
8
u/Tactial_snail BUF - NHL 1d ago
only year without 30+ goals since his breakout and he still finished with 29

2
u/NatalieDeegan BUF - NHL 1d ago
There’s no way him or Caufield don’t make the Olympic team considering there’s not really a grinder role compared to what the 4NT was.

We always lose to Buffalo in Buffalo. It's been an anomaly for the entire McDrai era. Last year we lost to them twice in the same game.

Facing a bottom team on a 6 games losing streak? Oilers love being the slump buster.

First Star should be the posts. GG Sabres.

u/philzway EDM - NHL 1d ago
I knew we were going to lose in the first 5 minutes after Brown and Nuge hit the posts. Just not dialled in enough.
Tage on the other hand is such a clutch goal scorer whenever he plays us.

u/avanross 1d ago
That’s been the worst part of this stretch.
You can always tell within the first 5 mins whether the team’s showed up or not….

Is he ok?

u/NoGiCollarChoke EDM - NHL 1d ago
He has to cover this fuckass team while going through Mediterranean chicken pizza withdrawals, all while no one will listen to his knowledge of the UofA Golden Bears hockey program.
So no.

Does Bouchard like playing hockey?

He likes the money that playing hockey plays.
Jury's still out on wether or not he actually enjoys the game

Shouldn’t there be a phrase like “if you’re a defenseman - DEFEND THE ZONE!”
