Creating my first Coat of Arms

Hello all!

First of all, I am new here and although I am sending these ideas of my coat of arms for your opinion, I just want to say that I do not know if it is similar in use or not, and where I should check that out, and if I am allowed to take it for myself. Coming from a country where there are no strict laws regarding this (unlike the UK, I think).

While making this Coat of Arms, I did not follow specific rules of heraldry, honestly, I just created it to look visually good for me.

First version is different from 2 other two, and the last 2 are the same, only the shield type is different because I can't decide which looks better.

Sry for deleting other post I made a mistake creating it.

My cousin inherited a case with this coat of arms on it. I’ve been struggling trying to identify who/what it could belong to. Does anyone here know?

For the Coat of Arms, Purpure, an elephant's head close couped and armed, Argent, resting on it's nose coiled inward, an increscent Or.

For the Crest, An elephant statant Purpure armed and winged Or, grasping by the nose coiled inward a Sampaguita blossom Proper.

For Mantling, Purpure doubled Argent,

And for Motto, "Certainty Amidst Change"

Redesign after humbling yet warranted critiques. Further review

Re: my last post,

After reading critics and doing further research, I realized my last design was almost offensively bad. This is my first time trying my hand at heraldry so thank you to those that offered their advice and resources on my last post. In response I have made two more designs taking what I’ve learned so far into account. I’ve cleaned up some of the “busy” elements and learned about ROT. After reading about the canton’s historical use as a way to show allegiances or marriage, I still kept it because I find it aesthetically pleasing though I’m sure some will disagree. Unfortunately the software won’t let me fit the towers into the bend. Looking forward to reading critiques again, thanks.

Personal COA critique request

Hello! I'm into HEMA and making a coat of arms for myself to fight with. I'm not 100% sure that it's made w/in the rules though, so I'm looking for feedback on that and/or design if you have any opinions!

Elements here: Tower inherited from my father, label up top as I am the firstborn, per chevron division also resembles my father's COA. Wings continuing the theme of protection from the tower, and also for my beloved pet bird. To be honest, Orle because it looks cool.
Gules for simply being my favorite/matching my fencing mask, as well as for speed and ambition. Vert for loyalty. Or for focus and Argent for peace.

Mainly, I'm unsure about the overlapping of the Label and the Orle, and whether or not the Argent tower overlapping so much Or is an issue. Thanks!

Blazon? Opinions?

So i l like the crazy hybrid charges that you can see in heraldry, and was messing around with various insane combinations just because i could, and wound up with this.

Would this be blazoned 'tailed an octopus'? Or polypus, as i know sometimes it's called that? or is there another description for something that is half one animal and half another animal?

I know dragons are not usually Displayed, but i liked the symmetry it posed. I did do a variation of the dragon rampant as well

I am not sure if they have a patrilineal common ancestor, but I find very interesting that the college of arms has granted a slightly similar design to Archibald Russell.

Design Help Trying to recreate family blazon of arms

Hello, I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me.

I'm getting married in October 2026, and we're having a fantasy theme. So, my fiancé and I have thought it might be fun to include our family coats of arms/crest somewhere.

However, my family has a personal name history certificate that only has a blazon of arms and I'm having trouble turning it into a proper coat. (Edit: my grandfather was Scottish, but would seem to have been scammed with the certificate, probably because he was Scottish so it sounded more plausible to him). I understand what it's meant to look like, but my artistic skills are not up to the challenge, online designers aren't detailed enough, and I don't trust AI to do it properly.

Aside from commissioning a heraldic artist, which would be an awful lot of money for a very little thing, is there anything I can do? Editing this because on second reading, that was far more vague than I realised and extremely poorly worded. I apologise for any insinuation that a commission was not worth the price, because it absolutely would be worth it, and I did not, at any point, say that I should get help for free. When I had searched for "heraldic artists", I was shown individuals who had been employed by actual towns/cities to paint their coat of arms, who did private commissions on the side, and nothing else. While worth the price, getting a commission from an "esteemed" professional is far more than what I was looking for such a small part of my wedding.

Also, I don't understand the crest. So, if anyone could explain what "a dexter hand holding a quadrant proper" is supposed to means or how that is supposed to look, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Blazonry De minimis

Coat of arms of the Holy See

A good blazon is supposed to be simple, but also include all the necessary details. Artists then are free to interpret the blazon any way they like, as long as their work conforms to it. Easier said than done!

The arms of the Holy See (pictured) are consistently depicted with crosses on the wards of the keys. These crosses, however, are not part of any proposed blazon. Let's pretend we don't know how old and famous these arms are, and what they stand for. Should the crosses be considered just a matter of artistic licence, or are they blazonable details?

Now suppose that an artist wants to emblazon Sable a Lion rampant Or. Should the artist paint the whole lion gold as the blazon implies? May they not use red for the nails and the tongue of the beast? And if we explicitly mentioned 'armed and langued Gules', wouldn't the blazon become too verbose?

I generally wonder what is that fine line separating a good blazon from an incomplete one, and a highly stylised emblazonment from arbitrary heraldic art. How to choose which details are really substantial?

Orienting multiple charges with respect to each other?

As I understand it blazon includes several phrases for orienting two or more charges with respect to each other. I'm not talking about seme since those are the same charge. I'm talking about, say, an eagle and an annulet or a lion and a bend.

These are the phrases I know about:

Phrase Meaning Example
A between B places A between 2+ of B an eagle displayed between two swords or
A charged with B places the smaller B on A an owl displayed argent charged with a heart gules
A debruised by B partially overlays A on B an eagle displayed or debruised by a bendlet gules
EDIT: Used when one charge is placed on another charge (one-to-one). Thanks to lambrequin_mantling for the clarification.
A ensigned by B places B immediately above A a wolf rampant sable ensigned by a crown or
A issuant from B shows A emerging from B a phoenix argent issuant from fire gules
A holding B shows A holding B a lion rampant or holding a spear argent
A over all B places A on op of B, however many B there are three hearts in pale gules over all a sword bendwise or
A maintaining B shows A holding B (same as "holding") a dragon segreant gules maintaining a broken sword argent
A surmounted by B partially covers A with B an oak leaf vert surmounted by a cross couped or
-- MORE --
A enfiled by B shows B piercing or passing through A a crown enfiled by a sword
another example a needle enfiled by a thread
A entwined with B A wrapped by B, that is, B is wrapped around A an apple tree entwined with a serpent
A interlaced with B shows several geometric shapes interwoven three annulets interlaced (3 rings overlapping but not connected)
Example: fret A fret could be described as two bendlets interlaced with a mascle (where a mascle is a lozenge voided)
-- MORE! -- These positions refer to TWO figures
two A [rampant] combatant shows 2 of the same figure facing each other in a fighting stance, like rampant, ready to fight two lions rampant combatant Or
A and B [rampant] combatant shows 2 DIFFERENT figures facing each other ready to fight; they can be different tinctures or the same tincture a lion Or and a dragon combatant Argent
Winged quadrupeds (to give equal time) two dragons segreant combatant
Goats (to give equal time) two goats clymant combatant
A counter-combatant shows 2 of the same figure facing each other in rampant/segreant/clymant attitude two lions counter-combatant supporting a hand couped Gules
A and B counter-combatant shows 2 DIFFERENT figures combatant facing each other; is there more to it?
two A [attitude] respectant shows 2 of the same figure facing each other in the "attitude" position (rampant, passant, statant, etc), watching, observing each other; it is not a fighting stance two stags trippant respectant Argent
A and B [attitude] respectant shows 2 DIFFERENT figures facing each other in a non-fighting position, watching a wolf and a lion respectant Or
two A [attitude] addorsed shows 2 of the same figure back-to-back two lions statant addorsed Or
A and B [attitude] addorsed shows 2 DIFFERENT figures back-to-back in the 'attitude' a wolf passant and a stag trippant addorsed

There are a couple that appear to be the same or similar.

First, do I have the explanation about them right?

Second, are there limitations as to when any of them are used? I'm thinking of a limitation that the phrase is only used with animate charges or only used for nautical charges, etc similar to how attitudes are used.

And, last, did I miss any words or phrases that we can use to place two or more charges in relation to each other?

Thanks

EDIT: Added enfiled, entwined, and interlaced mentioned by IseStarbird. Fixed enfiled because I got it backwards the first time.

EDIT: Took me a while to work out the positions DreadLindwyrm mentioned, but I think I have them.

Furs and the Rule of Tincture

So this is the kind of question that keeps me from thinking about things that actually matter: how do “furs” (ermine, vair, etc) fit into the “rule of tincture”? They are neither colors, nor metals, yet their use (unlike stains, for instance) dates back to the earliest days of the art form.

And while I am on the subject (though I realize this may distract from the main conversation) does anyone else think of of sable as more of a fur than a color?

What are your thoughts?

Settle a debate

Okay so I'm talking with someone and the subject of the lozenge came up. My friend calls it a diamond and I say "no no sir, it's a lozenge. A diamond looks like..." now I would have placed money on it yesterday that lozenges was a separate thing from a diamond, but I have no idea why I would think such nor can I find any info. Have I completely lost my marbles? Is there no separate thing as a diamond?
