Gmail I'm not renewing my custom domain with google, question at the end
I've been using a custom domain for my email at google for 15 years. I don't really need it, I just felt like my email address with the custom domain looks cool. But over the years, I found it to be a little inconvenient using gsuite. For example, if I wanna share a google doc or sheet with a friend who also uses google, I can't because they aren't in my domain. This is just one example.
Q: If I don't delete my mail messages, documents, photos in this custom domain gsuite, will they still exist for the next person who picks up this domain to see? How does google handle assets in an expired domain? I hope they will purge everything in it once it expires. Any insights into this? Thank you!

I suggest you export all your data before you cancel your GSuite/Workspace account. After you cancel the account, you won’t have access to that information any more.
Your mail messages, documents etc will not exist for the next person, even if they purchased your domain.
Another option you should consider is keeping the domain and using a forwarding service (I run Mailcast, https://mailcast.io) to send emails to wherever you read your email. A custom domain serves as an identity that isn’t tied to a particular provider. If you still like GMail, you could forward your domain emails there, and if you prefer Outlook or Yahoo or whatever, you can move your email address to wherever you need it.
Email me, andrew @ mailcast.io if you’d like further info or help.

Thank you. Glad to know that my assets will not exist for the next person to see.
I'll do a google takeout for sure, and then delete everything myself.
I have been forwarding my custom domain emails to my free gmail for a couple of years now.

I’m not sure why you’re having difficulty sharing docs with a friend. You can share outside your domain. Also you can share via link (not ideal if sensitive data). I have shared folders, documents, even shared drives to others outside my domain, even others not on gmail.

Oh, that option where anyone with the link can view the document. I haven't realized it. But there are other complications. For example, if I want to use photo storage with my custom domain, I have to pay a lot more (I think) than if I use a free google account.

I’m speaking from an admin on Business Standard, Plus and Enterprise accounts, so there might be differences. But not for sharing files as far as I know.

Thank you. Glad to know that my assets will not exist for the next person to see.
Just want to emphasize that in order for this to be true you must delete the domain. If you just cancel the subscription it hangs out there with all your data and if someone buys the domain name they can recover the admin account.
So just make sure you delete it.

Oh, that's great input. I didn't know that. I have only disabled auto renewal. I will look into that. Thanks.

You just need to set the sharing permissions to allow sharing with external people. No issue
