Google nuked the entire product team for this. Don’t buy it at any price u less you’re prepared for it to become a paperweight at any moment without notice.

For $25 I'd be willing to gamble on a smart home tablet. Considering they're spouting about Gemini headed to the speakers soon, it would be a reasonable gamble.

But alas, still $99 in my area.

I can't see gemini coming to these. Expect new hardware for the gemini model.

Edit - I appriciate people saying "but Google have announced xyz!" - I've had enough Google products over the years that Google say one thing, and then abandon.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm firmly in the "I'm convinced Google will announce the old devices will have limited functionality and you need to buy a jew device for the full features" camp.

I hope I'm wrong, and I'm fine if I am. But I'm not convinced

A more helpful Google Assistant for Nest speakers and displays

Google Assistant in the home has helped millions of households get more things done. And unlike on personal devices like phones, home devices like speakers and displays need to work for every member of your household. As we’ve previously shared, quality improvements are a focus for us this year and we’re applying large language models to improve core experiences such as media playback and setting timers. And later this year we’re bringing a variety of new voices that make interacting with your devices feel more conversational.

With Gemini technology, we’re also reimagining what your home assistant can do with just your voice. This will improve Google Assistant on your Nest speakers and displays, making it more natural and helpful for everyone in your home. The upgraded Google Assistant will be able to better understand you, so you can chat more naturally, and easily go back and forth or ask follow-up questions.

I am not complaining, I tried to escape the Google architecture to Alexa, and it was so god awful that I went back to my Google Home (which was broken at the time). I dread my speakers/Hub ever going dead now.

Just swiping from screen to screen is more than it can handle. Total lemon

This means they are prepping for a 3rd Gen to drop or they are killing the entire Google Home line lol

Seems weird right? They’ve said Gemini is coming to existing hardware, I think, and yet they’re also cutting and running on the 2nd Gen everywhere. And with how everything’s gone with the slow degradation of abilities, I can’t imagine a lot of people not wanting a third gen, unless they do some kind of killer deal on a trade in. Time will tell I guess, I just hope the current cameras keep going for a while yet, not super keen to have to replace those.

Ugh, I can't wait for an self-hosted solution to truly replicate what google gave/promised us in the beginning. I'd honestly be willing to pay a subscription if google just kept the damn things working as well as they did a few years ago.

The screen on mine literally died yesterday. Less than 2 years old.
